I think Placebo support in the UK has been pretty much consistent since they first appeared. They've been solid top 10 with just about every album without ever threatening to be big. They've hit #1 in France with every album since Black Market Music almost 10 years ago. Never made a dent in the US but maybe that's changing?

The only problem with Placebo is dudes terrible voice. Not even the Various Production remix could get me to stomach that howling mess.

A contemporary Russian composer. She's awesome.

Maybe other contemporaries like Ustvolskaya and Schnittke? She's pretty much peerless tbh. You should check out her string quartets as an intro.
