Who is Sofia Gubaidulina?

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Thursday, 10 December 2009 20:14 (fourteen years ago) link

A contemporary Russian composer. She's awesome.

Salvador Dali Parton (Turangalila), Thursday, 10 December 2009 20:15 (fourteen years ago) link

OKay! WHo would you compare her to?

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Thursday, 10 December 2009 20:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe other contemporaries like Ustvolskaya and Schnittke? She's pretty much peerless tbh. You should check out her string quartets as an intro.

Salvador Dali Parton (Turangalila), Thursday, 10 December 2009 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks Turangalila, I might just do that.

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Thursday, 10 December 2009 20:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes, and I also love love love her Piano Quintet, which is less abstruse than the works that followed but perfectly haunting in that lovely Russian way.

I hate the "musical compatibility" test, it is interesting, I love statistics, especially on music. But I hate it when I look at someone's page because I think they have interesting taste and it tells me that my compatibility is "LOW".

Entries that surprise/ baffle me: Passion Pit, Fever Ray, A Day To Remember (who?), Royksopp (people still listen to them?), Paramore (who?)

Was going to say Franz Ferdinand too.

27 THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS

^ I have no idea what this is, and I don't think I wanna know

Think Sum 41 without the subtlety.

Neil S, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:12 (fourteen years ago) link

Paramore were famous a few years back for having a 15 year old female singer, but shes like 19 or 20 now. They tend to be listened to by those who like stuff like Nickelback (ie critics dont like them but radio/mtv does). I'd imagine a lot of 14 year old girls who read Kerrang love them while the 14 year olds have the Kerrang posters on their ceiling.

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:12 (fourteen years ago) link

xp Actually, that's wrong, apparently they're more emo, judging by a cursory internet search.

Neil S, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:13 (fourteen years ago) link

While the 14 year old boys have the Kerrang posters on their ceiling.

Musical style and influences

Paramore's music has generally been regarded as emo[43][44] and pop punk[45]. Joshua Martin had written after an interview with Hayley Williams, "The band isn't just a short pop-punk girl with red hair and a spunky attitude. Their music is like them, it's aged differently. It's sped up, and slowed down. It's emo without being whiny, or bratty. Almost a very literal anti-Avril Lavigne.

Pfunkboy : The Dronelord vs The Girly Metal Daleks (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:20 (fourteen years ago) link

an anti-Avril Lavigne that shares the same fans.

sorry, but this is demonstrably false

Trying to imagine the almost-literal anti-Avril Lavigne.

Neil S, Wednesday, 16 December 2009 17:22 (fourteen years ago) link

i really hope that picture is real.

paramore are fun. its just vacuous emo pop done better than most other vacuous emo pop. Also "listened to by 14 year olds" is a rubbish criticism.
