So I'm concluding that I'm the only person hearing this.

I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary; if anything, the songs sounded much clearer to me.

Jesus Dan (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 11:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Seems like the problem is only with the single disc edition...

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link

just got the Scream, and yes--it's really distorted; bad. what's up w/ that? amazed more people aren't complaining!

After the Seven Year Itch, they figure they can get away with anything.

I occasionally see Mr Severin in my local curry house - if I get a chance I'll ask him.

Those last 3 tracks are what... 1985?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 20 October 2006 10:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Cheers!

I shan't get this, as the best stuff is on the Scream 2CD thing.

Oh alright, I probably will get it.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 20 October 2006 12:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Is it just me or does Join Hands sound like shit?

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:11 (seventeen years ago) link

In what way?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Ok so I just picked up the Scream reissue. Is it me or is the sound particularly distorted?? I'm wondering if there's something wronk with my copy or if they just wanted to keep that punk rock edge despite the adult reissue treatment?

-- Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonix...), July 29th, 2006. (baaderonixx)

This reissue job is a joke

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:22 (seventeen years ago) link

The album sounds (intentionally) murky and muffled. I believe it's supposed to sound oppressive and menacing but it comes across to me like someone is sitting on my speakers and I'm actually hearing the album as if it is being played through someone's ass.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:25 (seventeen years ago) link

I am listening right now, (on an ipod). Regal Zone on right now -sounds great to me, drums really crisp. Maybe the edge has been rolled off the guitar slightly, but doesn't sound too different to what I remember of the old vinyl.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I am mostly focusing on the guitar. Actually, I'm mostly focusing on "Icon".

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Guitar sounds fine on Placebo Effect. Right...I'll skip to Icon.

Sorry Dan, it sounds really good to me, but possibly a bit quieter than I remembered. Maybe it's just that there's more space around the guitar - you can hear REALLY clearly when he stomps on the tremolo at the start of the chorus (e.g at 2'15"). I like details like this!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:38 (seventeen years ago) link

The vocal is fine but everything else just seems... subdued.

I think the guitar tone isn't nearly as bright as it is on virtually every other siouxsie recording I've heard, which may be influencing my perception here. I'm also comparing this sonically to the version on The Seven Year Itch which has atrocious vocals but balls-out FANTASTIC guitar and drums.

Young Fresh Danny D (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 October 2006 13:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha! I just put the 7-year itch version on too! I really don't like the guitar throughout on that record - far too much flange for me. The heavy tremolo bit on the chorus of Icon might work if it was tighter in time with the drums. MacKay's original was way better. Straight chords but LOUDER would have worked for me. But you're right, the vocals are fucking dreadful!

wtf at the Tinderbox one, what happened to all of the weird b-sides that they used to stick on pressings of the CD

Now that I know their catalog a little better, I am REALLY looking forward to Dreamhouse!

Nocturne is getting a rerelease as well -- no bonus tracks and the DVD's been out for a while, so less essential but a great album anyway.

You guys:

Siouxsie and the Banshees at the BBC is a stunning 84-track, all digitally-remastered, 4 disc hard-back book set of exclusive BBC sessions, live concert tracks and TV performances recorded between 1977–2001 split across 3CDs and a DVD. All tracks were hand picked by the band, including alternative versions of 18 classic hit singles, key session tracks from 1977-1987 and a concert recording from the Apollo Theatre in Oxford in 1985. The set also includes the complete John Peel sessions alongside sessions recorded for Kid Jensen, Richard Skinner and Janice Long. Disc 3 contains highlights from their BBC concert recordings at the Apollo Theatre in Oxford and the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1988, where the band performed a storming set 3 nights in a row to a sold out crowd. Highlights include a breathtaking "Last Beat of My Heart", "Christine" and a rip roaring crowd pleasing end of show version of "Hong Kong Garden". Disc 4, however, is the real gem; a 29 track DVD of the band’s BBC TV performances, features the complete Old Grey Whistle Test broadcasts from 1978, 1982 and 1985, the Something Else performances from 1979 and 1980, the Rock Goes to College broadcast from 1981 and the band’s complete Top of the Pops performances. A fantastic 30 page booklet contains extensive sleeve notes by Paul Morley, interviews with all the band members and a unique and insightful introduction written by Siouxsie.

Sounds like a terrific package, but why Morley?

Soukesian, Thursday, 26 March 2009 10:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Morley seems inescapable, when it comes to UK post-punk reissues.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 26 March 2009 10:21 (fifteen years ago) link

I suppose he was around at the time, but I really can't imagine him having anything to tell me about the Banshees, and they're not a band I'd ever associate him with. Is he going to go on and on about Kylie?

Did anyone else buy the reissue of Hyaena featuring a skip on the "let them siiiing" part of the Dazzle glamour mix. Or was I the only one so blessed?

I almost picked up the Tinderbox one yesterday. Can anyone tell me why it's impossible to find the original mix of "Song from the Edge of the World" on compact disc? I understand that Sioux hates it and all, but still -- get over it.

You know that's on the original vinyl version, don't you? It's an intentional part of the mix, not a skip.

That's me bought everything from the reissue series up to 'Tinderbox' I'm guessing 'Peepshow' isn't being reissued?

What do folks make of the sound problems that are said to plague the reissues? It's my first time getting acquainted with the Banshees back catalogue but there's a few bits that sound a bit dodgy to my ears. On a few of the sets the bonus demos sound better quality wise than the album versions (i.e 'Happy House' on 'Kaleidoscope') and there's some apparent drop outs in some of the mixing. How do the resissues stack up to the original viny versions?

Great stuff though. Been a real pleasure discovering them recently.

AnotherDeadHero, Sunday, 21 February 2010 19:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Sound problems? I know there was an issue with the single-disc "The Scream" but otherwise I hadn't heard anything. And I did some A/B comparisons with the original CDs, too.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Sunday, 21 February 2010 19:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I think they sound really, really great! Was just playing Dreamhouse yesterday and it's so deep and detailed. That BBC box is a cracker too.

So are Peepshow, Superstition and The Rapture being re-done? Anyone know?

Dr.C, Monday, 22 February 2010 11:47 (fourteen years ago) link

BBC box is top of the list next for me. I got into them through the 'Nocturne' disc so I'm looking forward to more live stuff. There's doesn't seem to be many decent Banshees bootlegs on the web. I did download a Rockpalast WDR show from Koln in 81 on the Juju tour which was excellent thought. How great is John McGeogh?

As for the sound problems. This is from an amazon review of Juju;
"When I first read his review about the dropouts, I was skeptical because his was the only review of the three albums that talked about problems with audio quality; but as soon as I received my copies of the three new albums, I threw in Juju and listed for the supposed right-channel dropouts. There's no question about it - they're there. So the next logical step in trying to debunk his review was to rush straight back to my original (Geffen, not Polydor) CD that I bought 12 years ago to see if the same problems were present. Thanks to the not-so-subtle magic of having two CD drives on my computer, I was able to compare the same snippets of audio in rapid succession. The result: the original discs didn't contain the dropouts that are on the remaster. In fact, on "Into The Light," there's a crystal clear peak in volume on the original CD where the remaster's right channel gurgles.

When it comes to volume and clarity, this disc is all over the map (though not as extreme as the last two tracks on "Kaleidoscope" - How a demo version of "Happy House" can sound infinitely better than the remastered version of "Israel" is mind-boggling). To use just two examples on "Juju," the remastered "Into The Light" makes the original CD sound as though it's being played under two feet of water, and I'm not talking about the removal of producer Nigel Gray's "walking on the moon" sound that permeates the entire album. In contrast, there appears to be no upgrade in sound quality on "Sin In My Heart."

AnotherDeadHero, Monday, 22 February 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link

I must have cloth ears - all of this has passed me by. Will have a listen to some of this tonight. I'm not really that fussed about the odd glitch though.

Dr.C, Monday, 22 February 2010 16:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought they all sounded great loud on my stereo. It's only since I put them on my mp3 and listened through headphones that I began to notice some of the drop outs etc. Like I said though, I don't have any originals to compare with so I can't speak with any authority at all really. The music is superb though. Can't believe I overlooked them for so long.

Same here, actually. I didn't get the fuss about either the Siouxsie or the New Order reissues -- both sound just fine to my ears, but maybe I'm just "not listening critically enough" or what have you.
