I saw De La & Common perform "Tha Bizness" together a few years back. Dope.

I never thought I'd see the day BR&L gets praised like this.
jhøshea on a pile of money about Stakes, but can't back this revisionist idea of Common as a devil because of his latter day Badu mindstate/pants.
Resurrection for fucking all time.

I dunno, Stakes was where I got off the De La bus. Sold it back years ago haven't heard it since, maybe I'd like it now. At the time I was very disappointed by the lack of Prince Paul. imho the best of theirs is probably is Dead or BMS for me, too bad the vinyl copy I have of is Dead is the WORST FUCKING RECORD PRESSING I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE. They songs are actually chopped short!

It's been a pretty good decade for these guys!
― Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago) link
The Art Official Inteligence albums are good - Mosaic Thump is the better one (nice trick making the skits a showcase for dope freestyles), but Bionix at least has two great tracks, sampling Gainsbourg and Carl Tjader. The Grind Date is way more quality, tho - it's about as fun and exciting as a conscious rap release could get this decade. A lot of really cool beats, great guest spots (Ghostface, Flava Flav)...them doing "Much More" on Dave Chapelle is like one of my all-time fave popcult moments. Even the cover booklet is great (it has this calendar-style gimmick.) They've become pretty good producers, too, and this Supa Dave West guy they've got doing most of the beats on recent albums is a talent.
It's funny, I'm a big fan but I hardly ever listen to what they're rhyming about tbh.
― Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 17:35 (fifteen years ago) link
I've only heard 3 and 2, but 3 > 2, so I'm tempted to try 4 next rather than 1.

The first two albums:
"3 feet high" had lots of 'darker' moments, but everyone noticed the 'daisy' stuff.
"DLS is Dead" had lots of light/daisy moments as well, but people were expecting those but got 'surprised' by the darker stuff this time.
They are both great albums.

Grind Date is great because it suggests a world where De La Soul just kept recording, putting out a damn respectable album every two or three years. It's kind of a broken promise is that respect. Really good album, not quite a classic though (I actually prefer Bionix)
