“I’m just trying to get the idea out before the inspiration is gone,” he told The Times last year. “Everything I do is motivated by the fear of running out of time.”

yeah thank God the writer jotted that quote down so when Jay Reatard died you could point out the irony of it

color me clueless but up until this point i had thought that jay reatard was some pitchfork approved john mayer type, not a garage rocker from memphis

Despite the fact that his records esp his last one were really dark the guy always seemed so vital and driven I did not really see this coming at all. A big shock. He leads off the Chris Knox Stroke album that might just be the last thing he did/ recorded before this happened? Last record felt like a transition record and while it kind of lacked the coherence of Blood Visions still contained some hellish good songs. I'm going to mow the lawns. Very Sadly.
Will miss you Jay Reatard.

To be fair, plenty of deaths are temporarily investigated as homicides; it's a routine thing, just going down the checklist to make sure the authorities don't overlook anything. I'd be surprised if it's actually a homicide.

"Homicide" as a manner of death doesn't mean the same thing as in other contexts, and is definitely not the same as "murder." It could mean lots of things.
I already wrote about this elsewhere, but it's pretty sad to see someone who'd dedicated that much of his life to music, and seemed to be in a really transitional period (in terms of his music, his audience, probably a whole lot of his life), not get the chance to finish that trip.
― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Friday, 15 January 2010 01:28 (fourteen years ago) link
Ah, wait, sorry, we're talking about police investigation more than cause/manner of death -- I don't know exactly how the two things trigger one another, but yeah, it doesn't necessarily mean a ton.

just listened to watch me fall today, for the first time in months. i don't get why people don't love that record, but i guess if you like him as a noisy punk then maybe him as a smart loud-fast-pop guy is too much of a shift? anyway, it sounded great and "there is no sun" seemed like a sadly otm closer.
