We're announcing the guest curator/curators for this year's event tomorrow.

yay!

tza tziki sauce (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 11 February 2010 14:56 (fourteen years ago) link

And some line-up additions.

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:02 (fourteen years ago) link

how long ago did you guys nail down the curator?

tza tziki sauce (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:03 (fourteen years ago) link

Hmm not sure how long ago it was confirmed to be honest, I only found out who it was a week or so ago. Barry keeps things close for as long as possible as the world is far too gossipy nowadays and if something leaks there's no way to get it back.

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Does the curator live up to the MBV/Flaming Lips stuff in years past?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 11 February 2010 15:44 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm aware it's like a .0005% chance, but me and my friends are all quietly praying it's gonna be Faith No More. Seeing them in a room that size would pretty much be a dream of a lifetime. Plus Patton did an amazing job curating his ATP. I'd be like an excited 11th grader about a band for the first time in forever. All my cranky pretense would disappear.

tza tziki sauce (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:00 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd be happy if it was Faith No More because then I wouldn't be sad about not getting to attend, like I have the past two years. I could make peace with not going, because I've seen the Patton lineups before and I'm not wholly impressed with his choices.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 11 February 2010 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, a Stockhausen performance, octagenarian electroacoustic legend Bernard Parmegiani, Squarepusher and Os Mutantes aren't 'impressive'. We need more bold choices like Crystal Castles.

When did I say this again? Oh right... I didn't, you made it up. Case closed.

The Patton/Melvins festival was one of the best ever. Really superb.

I think the choice will surprise a fair few people.

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 11 February 2010 18:47 (fourteen years ago) link

it's Gaga isn't it?

FC Tom Tomsk Club (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 11 February 2010 19:12 (fourteen years ago) link

Clearly Gaga is too obvious, it's Ke$ha!

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 11 February 2010 19:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Gee, Jamie. You make the board rounds.

I finally scanned all the artist polaroids from 09; have the rest on my site but the hosting is down for some odd reason. Hopefully I can get them back up soon.

Only when the AC movie was announced did I understand why Deacon wrote "ODDSAC" on his polaroid...

i've said it before, but it seriously may have been the greatest weekend of my life, no fooling

tza tziki sauce (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 12 February 2010 04:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Glad I don't have such low standards.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 12 February 2010 06:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Melvins + Mastodon on stage playing The Bit with three drummers + 3 guitarists made my mind melt that weekend. The only downer of that event was what horrible people butthole surfers were, but then i think we should have expected that a bit more than we did. Annoyingly some people who might have reputations as being assholes turn out to be lovely (Mike Patton, Buzz) and others turn out to be assholes.

Jamie_ATP, Friday, 12 February 2010 10:28 (fourteen years ago) link

As previously announced, Friday 3rd September features these performances as part of our Don't Look Back day:

IGGY & THE STOOGES performing Raw Power
SLEEP performing Holy Mountain
MUDHONEY performing Superfuzz Bigmuff + Early Singles
THE SCIENTISTS performing Blood Red River (first ever U.S. Show)
+ more to be confirmed!

Friday will also feature a Comedy Stage, details of which are to be announced soon.

NEWLY CONFIRMED - ATP celebrate 10 years with a birthday party on Sat 4th September and are happy to announce a day of past ATP curators, ATP Recordings artists and friends, with the first announcements being:

SONIC YOUTH
EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY
THE BREEDERS
F**K BUTTONS
THE BOOKS
PAPA M
APSE
+ more to be confirmed!

NEWLY CONFIRMED - Jim Jarmusch will curate Sunday 5th September and his first choices are:

THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE
RAEKWON
GIRLS
F*CKED UP
WOODEN SHJIPS
THE BLACK ANGELS
VIVIAN GIRLS
+ more to be confirmed!

james pauseworthy (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Not too bad, but I'm okay with missing this more so than the last two years. Raekwon should be fun, but that aside, I've seen pretty much everyone on Sat/Sun that I'm interested in on that lineup (Sonic Youth, Explosions, Breeders, Fuck Buttons, Wooden Shjips, Black Angels). The Brian Jonestown Massacre on Sunday looks hugely disappointing as a headliner, I hope there ends up being something more worthwhile in the top Sunday slots for those attending. Still bummed about missing Iggy and Sleep, but those aside, I'll stay at home in Texas this year, not by choice, but at least there's nothing that I would just *die* to miss... yet, that is.

Also -- is it just me, or do the ATP anniversary lineups with past curators, etc. strike anyone else as predictable?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, how long until Tortoise, Shellac, Dirty Three, Melvins, Deerhoof, etc. join the Saturday lineup? Don't get me wrong, I love most of those guys, but they've been ATP's bread and butter for years now and are sort of a disappointment when it's just a day full of familiar faces.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:55 (fourteen years ago) link

(Sorry for the non-love, btw -- I still think ATP is the best recurring festival out there, and ATP New York's current lineup still shits handily over Coachella, Bonnaroo, et al.)

I think lineups made up of some of the heaviest hitters of your past events are predictable in the best way humanly possible though. I mean, yeah it would be nice to see some surprises, but the ATP10 Saturday lineup already has three bands that could sell-out a 3,000 person room on any night in New York

james pauseworthy (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Between their appearance at ATPs past, and their appearance in Jarmusch's last movie, I'm really shocked that SunnO))) and Boris haven't been confirmed yet.

james pauseworthy (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 12 February 2010 16:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Also, the Jarmusch day still really lacks a headliner. I wonder if we should just

Boris was at last year's Flaming Lips ATP NY, but yes, I'm surprised about Sunn O))) especially and that's a live show that would reallllllllyyy make me think about flying out to NY for the weekend and hitting the fest.

Hopefully, Jarmusch can organize a SunnO))), Earth & Neil Young jam session. Make it happen, Jim! Don't blow it!

(Don't Look Back: The Dead Man Soundtrack! PLEASE. Would seriously fly out for it.)

I see your point. Still, I've only been to the two ATP NY events so far, two ATPs total, nothing overseas, and I've seen all five of those guys between the two fests. They are like ATP house bands at this point.

Def gotta be some more metal coming up, no doubt. SunnO))) did TWO sets at ATP10, so between that and Jim's use of them in his new flick, I think they have to be a lock

aw yeah. criterion did the last couple of years which were great anyhow. it's just kind of hard to go see any of them, but there are worse things than watching the middle half hour of something while something you're not into is on.

ha, after a run-in w/ them + their road crew back in '91 me + some friends coined the phrase "the buttholes are assholes" - I'm sure we weren't the first nor the last

I will say for the record however king coffey is a lovely person

I'm crazy happy that the Scientists are playing. Just might get out there for that.

Even money says Spiritualized will end up on the bill doing a LAG set.

one month passes...

New stuff for today:

We picked Tortoise, Bardo Pond, BEAK>, Sleepy Sun and Avi Buffalo for the Saturday
Jim Jarmusch picked Sunn O))) and Boris Present Altar, Hope Sandoval And The Warm Inventions, Dungen and White Hills for the Sunday

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 25 March 2010 15:15 (fourteen years ago) link

man hope sandoval would be so dope as a guest vocalist on the next sunn o))) record

And guess what? I think Pitchfork is going to give it a BM. (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 25 March 2010 15:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Those are solid but unsurprising additions. I still hope Jarmusch reaches out a little more to other people he's worked with, as well As Sunn, Boris, etc (who you'd kind of expect to see at an ATP event anyway). Surely John Lurie will be involved somewhere? And, as hinted at up there ^, Tom Waits would just be unreal. Kutshers really is the perfect venue for him as well.

Position Position, Thursday, 25 March 2010 19:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Saw Waits live in Dallas roughly a year ago and dude was fucking unreal. Better than most anything I've seen at ATP NY the past two years (and I've enjoyed the great majority of those lineups)...

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 25 March 2010 19:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Tom is better than anything i've ever seen live ever. Ever.

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 25 March 2010 20:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I guess the problem with having someone like Waits involved is it would sell out in about two seconds flat and many of his fans might not necessarily stick around for the other bands.

Position Position, Thursday, 25 March 2010 20:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Which is why Tom is probably a good final announcement

ksha (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 25 March 2010 21:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Haha, we all have our fingers crossed. C'mon, Jim, make it happen!
