i um...gotta dissent a bit here, not really feeling this quite as much as everyone else is. beat is nice, kinda standard "mr yeah"/"more than just friends"/"hard" bounce (drums are very Los but they both use that piano really similarly so it's kinda hard to tell) but nothing wrong with that. having a tougher time getting into the vocals, really hate when dream puts on that flat affect. it's not bad though, chorus is kinda lazy but it gets better toward the end

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:23 (fourteen years ago) link

ok it's Los

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I like the thing his voice does on the line "Got a girl that's shy-yyyy"

hiv prevention lobster (The Reverend), Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:27 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't think there's anything standard about "mr. yeah"! also it sounds nothing like "hard" -- it sounds patently like the-dream and i think that's great. compare it to like... "walkin on the moon" or something & i think it's way better.

like i think it sounds like TERIUSBOT in the best way -- he has a control of his sound & is working within it while flipping a few things -- it's a bit weird structurally for him & it's a totally hilarious song, i think it slots in nicely with "my love" & "rockin that shit" which were total sonic outliers as singles off lvm

but then again i like 'how to be a lady' more than mariah & don't think 'rockin that shit' is the pinnacle of his singles discog so ymmv

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:32 (fourteen years ago) link

i didn't mean "standard" perjoratively, just that it's a style he's used a bunch of times before

ha well i also like the e red more than the mariah, but i think it's pretty clear that this fits a lot better with the latter? people complain about his melodic range, especially on the mariah; i think i'm feeling the same thing right now but it's hard to legit criticize him for it because he clearly wrote this song with about 5 notes for a reason - i just wish he wouldn't do it.

i guess a decent reference point for this would be "shawty is the shit!" but i think he does a lot more with that. much better middle eight & chorus & melody - i saw someone mention the harmonies (which totally make "shawty" imo) but i didn't notice them here, gonna re-listen

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:43 (fourteen years ago) link

you might be right idk -- i'm waiting on JUDGE SHIPLEY to deliver the verdict

i think when you get dream working out of his zone sonically you might end up with "hit it on the road" or "let me see the booty"

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:49 (fourteen years ago) link

specifically i like that it works off that glistening, golden "rockin that shit" sound but goes for something more audacious and clubbier and a bit more... gangsta (as much as terius can)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:50 (fourteen years ago) link

this does sound like TERIUSBOT

b-side material

but I still love it

dyao, Thursday, 18 February 2010 05:58 (fourteen years ago) link

tbh it is so hard to approach this objectively because i have so much invested in him as an artist. i think it's safe to say though that this song is VERY standard dream - he basically mixes a bunch of ingredients that have made him great (bouncy piano, echo-y chorus, orgasm bridge, "AYY", etc) and for me this time it came out a little diluted for some reason. it's not a bad song tho! i mean love/hate is basically one of my favorite albums ever and even i can't bring myself to give a shit about "ditch that..."

still have super high hopes for the album of course

xxxp my non-bold prediction - shipley will like this more than "hard" but less than "obsessed"

xp dude besides mayyybe the drums this has nothing in common with "rockin that shit" - "hard" is the closest imho

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 18 February 2010 06:02 (fourteen years ago) link

i think this is gonna be a huge hit

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 06:04 (fourteen years ago) link

the synths are great cause they have that weird texture from "The Beautiful Ones" without going for a full pastiche of that song like everyone else who breaks out that synth timbre does

hiv prevention lobster (The Reverend), Thursday, 18 February 2010 06:05 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah this could def go top 15 or so - i think that with all of his singles tho so who knows

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 18 February 2010 06:08 (fourteen years ago) link

really? what's different about this single that will propel it to the top

dyao, Thursday, 18 February 2010 06:12 (fourteen years ago) link

well this is not going anywhere near "the top" but it could certainly be a hit of similar magnitude to his other hits - 15-25 range.

*checks charts, it's not there yet* "IT'S A FLOP!"

:D

yeah this sounds pretty "standard" terius but standard terius is great - it's not as weird as "hit it on the road" but this is such a feelgood cut and it'll be an excellent spring jam when spring deigns to show its face - sounds like a much fuller take on "shawty is da shit", there's a ton of stuff going on in the background.

lyrically, this = jay-z's "girls, girls, girls"

yeah and the mood is similar too; call all destroyer otm re: buoyancy

If I ever become a mixtape dj, I am going to use that Pacino Heat clip as one of my annoying talking over a song exclusive things, but for songs dedicated to teh booty.

tell me what ya'll want next uptempo Slow, whatever the album is deeper than space!

Terius, I'm gonna need a dark, brooding Nikki style track, STAT

slow jams in the vein of "purple kisses" plz ty

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 18 February 2010 15:23 (fourteen years ago) link

This song is pretty good but I mean... it sounds like everything else by Terius, there's nothing game-changing here at all and I don't see how this'll be a big hit for him... and I find it kind of funny that y'all are going gaga over this pretty standard song but are bashing the new Usher shit, "Little Freak" >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> this.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 18 February 2010 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link

uh no

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 19:47 (fourteen years ago) link

people need to explain to me what's wrong with the song sounding like terius. since when is this a bad thing? los uses the same drums on EVERY song! i missed when dream singles were like huge leaps in r&b sonics. if we're talking about "fancy" or something then that's different, but all of his singles are just great 'normal' r&b like this is...

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 19:49 (fourteen years ago) link

isntt there like a special thread for anticipating this album jus sayin

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 18 February 2010 19:55 (fourteen years ago) link

jordan otm, consolidation is kinda what we're all hoping for anyway i think

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 18 February 2010 19:56 (fourteen years ago) link

well also from a practical standpoint we are all v. familiar with two terius solo albums as well as his work with other artists so it stands to reason that the "we are surprised by this guy" phase of his career might be winding down....

call all destroyer, Thursday, 18 February 2010 19:58 (fourteen years ago) link

"fancy" is a dope song but it doesn't have the same kind of sonic wonder as "rockin that shit", which was the lead single to the last album and a lot better obv.

anyway my beef wasn't that it "sounds like terius" as much as it draws on all the things that I love about him but all of the parts are kind of half-assed. it's like mixing your favorite colors and it coming out brown

vag gangsta (k3vin k.), Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link

^^this prolly means you have cheap paints btw

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:05 (fourteen years ago) link

hahaha

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:06 (fourteen years ago) link

a lot better than "love king", not "fancy" - to clarify

xp alright bye guys

"rockin that shit" = "so good" pt 2 fwiw

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i understand kevin's point i just think he's wrong & that it's a great pop song

J0rdan S., Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:08 (fourteen years ago) link

rockin that shit is a fucking monster tho ur right

plaxico (I know, right?), Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:08 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i mean i also listened to it once on laptop speakers i'm sure i'll have more thoughts when the album comes out

call all destroyer, Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:11 (fourteen years ago) link

from the-dream's twitter:

Thank You all so much for embracing the single! the album is deeper and i push further but first things is first.

tell me what ya'll want next uptempo Slow, whatever the album is deeper than space!

seems like he already understands these criticisms

!aNiMeGaLaXy (Future_Perfect), Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:16 (fourteen years ago) link

also just realized the end of this song leaves room for an amazing transition a la take u home 2 my mama --> love vs. money

!aNiMeGaLaXy (Future_Perfect), Thursday, 18 February 2010 20:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Not so much into "Love King". It sounds pretty but I like Terius in overawed-by-the-majesty-of-your-loving mode, here he sounds self-satisfied and entitled.

Tim F, Thursday, 18 February 2010 22:12 (fourteen years ago) link

i was half wondering if it hasn't been pitched up or something, it seems very fast. gives it the air not of buoyancy but a sort of artifical giddyness, bolshily rushing so no one has to linger over the details that aren't there; quite unusual for him.

might eventually accept this working as some form of grand counterpoint on the album, but as it stands it's a bad teaser and a worse single. :(

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 February 2010 23:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, it lacks the sense of pacing that elevates the (otherwise similar) "I Love Your Girl" - there's none of the space that in the latter song allows lines like "F*** that n****..." to leap out at you.

Tim F, Thursday, 18 February 2010 23:22 (fourteen years ago) link

if i'm being creative, hurriedly blurting your big single out plays kinda badly with the scene set by endless twitrants about lack of recognition too tbh. "you should know me like that" and "you don't know me like that" all in the same chorus eh terius?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pmulb_-bN5s&fmt=22

btw was there mention made of this lvm offcut upthread. it's kinda ridic but i've grown to like it - tricky's sudden bit of purple inspiration for the last 10 seconds really is worth the entry fee alone.

"rockin that shit" = "so good" pt 2 fwiw

Umm I think you have this backwards?

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Thursday, 18 February 2010 23:50 (fourteen years ago) link

fwiw, when "Rockin That Shit" came out I dismissed it as standard Terius and I was as wrong to do so then as you guys are now

she got dumps like a rage, rage (The Reverend), Thursday, 18 February 2010 23:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Dunno, I sorta consider the two songs to be as far apart from eachother as can be while still being "standard Terius". "Rockin' That Shit" is on the far other side of my humbled vs entitled dichotomy, and I loved it from the very first bar.
