I fell asleep last week with a mix cd playing in my earphones, and woke up with the cooing throat-noise part of "Body Speaking" all echoey and wet in my ears. I was hard as a rock.

This is when I truly began to appreciate Luomo.

two weeks pass...

I really like this piece - it nails The Present Lover surprisingly quickly and easier (though not enough, probably, to satisfy the doubting Thomases, but then nothing ever does). I had actually been struck by the similarities between Fever and The Present Lover - they frequently share that too-ecstatic quality. My vision of what Kylie's follow-up should be like was something a bit like the poppier moments of The Present Lover, even before I'd heard that record.

so what about the admission that he's moving in a more "R&B" direction with the next one? it seems like the "logical" step oddly enough, given most of the present lover, his general ambivalence towards electronic dance culture, and the basic pre-house predilections he's always going on about in interviews. (even vocalcity in its way now can kind of be seen as a post-glitch update on disco-funk.)

Yeah, I was thinking that myself -- without saying I'm a Luomo expert, I was imagining this shift and finding it sorta meh.

Well I sort of agree with that even though I love The Present Lover - it's one of those midpoint in a trajectory moments I think.

You can see the same thing with Kylie going in the other direction - Fever was midpoint in a trajectory between Light Years and Body Language and is much better than both.

"Mirrorball" is an interesting example of an alternative direction Luomo might have gone in with the second album - more minimal but also housier.

i'm not writing him off completely, of course; i just worry that his idea of "r&b" is going to be anita baker or mid-80s luther vandross rather than destiny's child or (even) jagged edge.

Luther Vandross is possibly a better direction than, like, Spacek or something though. It's hard to say.

yeah one of the things that i liked (not liked) about the present lover was when the opulence/cheese meter kind of went off the scale ("visitor", the female vox on "what good").

what he told me was that he really digs the vocal science in modern R&B (he mentioned Brandy and JT), that they're the easiest way to add a 'soulful' or organic dimension to music and he wants to find new ways to use them. i'm not sure he's going all the way to the songful "real" side, he seems more engaged by how that's implied in modern R&B. anyway, he just finished this one, cut him some slack guys ;]

is is just me or does "the present lover" lack the forward propulsion of "vocalcity"? i'm glad it's finally released here so now i can go pick it up. i downloaded it awhile back and deleted it pretty quickly, but my memory of it is that it's much more similar to his vladislav delay stuff (multi-dimensional texture overload).

he's playing here in a couple of weeks and i can't decide if i should go hear him or not

It's only a 12" so that should slow things up some. I'm quite keen obv - "What Good" was one of my favourite tracks on The Present Lover (was it Raz on the title track as well?) and I'm hoping these new tracks are sequels of sorts.

Raz also tops on the Alexander Kowalski album...

I've always heard it as (in the order that the cut-up vocals appear:

I can't remember any other lyrics in it off-hand. It's not supposed to make sense really, although all the vocals imply a lot.

"What Good" is my favorite as well, it's that little gentle, extremely quiet/subtle keyboard thing going on.

"Shelter" is pretty wicked too...live it was a revelation.

its on soulseek, vinyl rip but at 256, two excellent tracks though the second might have a bassline a little too close for comfort to "beat it" but it still sounds great. first track might be one of the best pop songs of the year.

I'm pretty sure a lot of vocals on The Present Lover are just cut up syllables, particularly the main refrain in the 'hunting for you' section.
