Indie rock dudes doing metal never works out. Dead Child? Goblin Cock? Witch? May be good for a chuckle or two, but they all seem to miss the point.

smacked down over Twitter (J3ff T.), Sunday, 14 March 2010 22:36 (sixteen years ago)

Oh I like Witch, a lot. But mostly the second album which sorta branched more into psych-rock than metal imo.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Sunday, 14 March 2010 22:37 (sixteen years ago)

I have the first album, vocals drove me insane. And I have a pretty high tolerance for crap vocals.

smacked down over Twitter (J3ff T.), Sunday, 14 March 2010 22:39 (sixteen years ago)

hey Goblin Cock are awesome. Witch are pretty fine too.
Ryan Adams "punk" stuff was crap too. Wish he would go back to his heartbreaker era. Gold, whilst having some really good songs on it was the start of his downfall, love is hell excepted. Maybe i need to hear that one jon mentions.

xps

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 14 March 2010 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

i suppose you dont like jex thoth either?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 14 March 2010 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

it could be worse, some people on here could've liked real crap like Blind Melon

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 14 March 2010 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

Never heard them. I don't know, indie rock guys are good at their day jobs, but even if they like metal, they never seem to capture the spirit of the genre. Dead Child, in particular, feels really soulless.

smacked down over Twitter (J3ff T.), Sunday, 14 March 2010 22:47 (sixteen years ago)

I dig Dead Child!

the most sacred couple in Christendom (J0hn D.), Sunday, 14 March 2010 23:19 (sixteen years ago)

Going back a little bit further in the thread, I would pay $25 for W.A.S.P., though I admit to not knowing their newer material. And Blackie does not have the greatest live voice, but they were undeniably classic in their heyday.

Cattle Grind, Sunday, 14 March 2010 23:36 (sixteen years ago)

J3ff: I interviewed Icarus Witch about a year ago at the same time as a load of other bullet belt and cider types like Enforcer, Bullet, Firebrand Super Rock, Raven's Creed and others. I was just getting some of my facts mixed up. (Which is embarrassing given that they quote me on their website.)

Anyway, all of this pointless tattle aside, I'm glad to hear they've got a new album coming out.

Doran, Sunday, 14 March 2010 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, John, but you're an indie rock artist who likes metal, so you kind of just proved my point!

smacked down over Twitter (J3ff T.), Sunday, 14 March 2010 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

Doran -- Yeah, I can see how that could be discombobulating. I think Icarus Witch are one of the better of those acts, though, and like you said, it's cool that they have a new album coming out.

nuh-uh! I'm a metal fan who plays indie rock! big diff in my mind anyway!

the most sacred couple in Christendom (J0hn D.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:10 (sixteen years ago)

like when I bought tragic serenades I guarantee you I was not listening to any wack R.E.M. crap for example

the most sacred couple in Christendom (J0hn D.), Monday, 15 March 2010 04:10 (sixteen years ago)

Cool stuff re: Yob! Would've liked to have been there.

A. Begrand, Monday, 15 March 2010 04:11 (sixteen years ago)

awww, had no idea that yob played ny. wish I could have gone. :-/

original bgm, Monday, 15 March 2010 14:06 (sixteen years ago)

They weren't in NY, at least not in reference to that article. That was about their performance at the Scion Rock Fest in Ohio.

I'm not trying to impugn your metal cred! I know you're troo and kvlt. You yourself have said that you wouldn't try to do a metal project, though.

smacked down over Twitter (J3ff T.), Monday, 15 March 2010 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, John, but you're an indie rock artist who likes metal, so you kind of just proved my point!

Thought this was directed at Doran, was confused

Is anyone else a teeny bit excited for the new Rose Kemp? I tried to drum up some support upthread but it was in the middle of a bunfight

also does anyone have any recommendations of recent metal for me, that I'd be sure to like? (yes I am going to listen to the shit out of the new Cathedral, as WELL as the new Chrome Hoof)

ilxor lookin' boy (acoleuthic), Monday, 15 March 2010 17:32 (sixteen years ago)

Rose Kemp is great.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 15 March 2010 17:44 (sixteen years ago)

Man I really hope the pitas thing is only temporary. I would hate to have lost Adrien's blog.

whoops, skimmed the article and missed, uh, the first two words in it.

anyway, rose kemp clip song posted above seemed cool! I'm not familiar but I will check out the new one if I remember to.

original bgm, Monday, 15 March 2010 17:47 (sixteen years ago)

the last one was excellent

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 15 March 2010 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

opening + closing tracks espesh

ilxor lookin' boy (acoleuthic), Monday, 15 March 2010 18:02 (sixteen years ago)

cool. duly noted.

so, I've been listening to shining's blackjazz. still not sure if I love it yet, but imo, it really sounds like the midpoint between the fredrik thordendal solo record and zu. definitely give it a shot if either of those two do it for you. (esp thorendal - I'd be surprised if they weren't directly influenced by that record)

original bgm, Monday, 15 March 2010 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

ooh you've timed your Blackjazz love-in to coincide with me looking at the metal thread!

i've written enough about them, but the record is vying with the Knife opera for my album of '10 so far - it's far-out industrial-prog-jazz insanity of the highest calibre

(and cheers for the indirect thorendal tip!)

ilxor lookin' boy (acoleuthic), Monday, 15 March 2010 18:21 (sixteen years ago)

Man I really hope the pitas thing is only temporary.

Oh no!

A. Begrand, Monday, 15 March 2010 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, Tom Ewing has something up on Twitter about pitas being down. I'm not sure what is going on.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 15 March 2010 18:33 (sixteen years ago)

I thought for a moment there you were going to say Tom Ewing had written an article on metal. I wonder if that's one of the genres he's never investigated. He did after all mellow in his attitude towards classic rock since the beginning of ILM. It's not gonna happen though, is it?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 15 March 2010 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

hey Louis do you like Astra?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 15 March 2010 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

(and cheers for the indirect thorendal tip!)

np! and fwiw, I prefer the original release to the "version 3.33" one that relapse put out. mostly because I don't care for one long bonus track that drags the whole thing down a bit. sounds kinda like allan holdsworth jamming over final fantasy battle music.

original bgm, Monday, 15 March 2010 18:49 (sixteen years ago)

Cripes, that Scion festival had Liturgy, Ludicra and Absu in a row on one stage. How many boxy cars do I have to buy to get them to do that again in Boston?

glenn mcdonald, Monday, 15 March 2010 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

I'd have liked to have gone to that, but then I would have had the worst time deciding who to see. That schedule was brutal.

A. Begrand, Monday, 15 March 2010 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

Seven kids take on "Cowboys from Hell" and NAIL it:

Metal kids these days are so technically skilled, it's frightening.

A. Begrand, Monday, 15 March 2010 23:49 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno anything about astra - will be on thorendal

ilxor lookin' boy (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 00:19 (sixteen years ago)

prog/art rock on Rise Above

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 00:24 (sixteen years ago)

well, WASP just cancelled another show, in PA, and gave no reason (yet), so I'm retracting my benefit-of-the-doubt on the NY show -- ppl are super-pissed

the most sacred couple in Christendom (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 02:42 (sixteen years ago)

btw I finally got the 12" Drastus put out back in December. Jesus Christ. so so far ahead of any other black metal act...no competitors anywhere as far as I'm concerned

the most sacred couple in Christendom (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 02:43 (sixteen years ago)

Say could anybody recommend me a cd that makes good background music for arson? Because with the night I'm having tonight, it's going to happen, and I at least want to have good tunes in the background when it does.

Cattle Grind, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 02:47 (sixteen years ago)

There's always Arson Anthem, if you want to be literal.

smacked down over Twitter (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 02:50 (sixteen years ago)

wow. I want listen to them now.

Cattle Grind, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 02:52 (sixteen years ago)

xpost - Big Black "Kerosene" would be the best arson soundtrack IMO.
