This is a really great album, first two tracks are especially good. Hipsters and GHEYS will hate it though!

You're right, I'm gay and I hate it. According to Whiney I'm a hipster as well. So you've got me bang to rights.

Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 12:48 (fourteen years ago) link

i dont hate the album as thats just a waste of useful energy.
i'm completely indifferent to it.
ok, perhaps i'm a little annoyed i wasted 30 minutes of my life maybe, but i was on the payroll during the stream, so not all is lost.

mark e, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:21 (fourteen years ago) link

'Dan Treacy' is my favourite here, completely different from anything MGMT have ever done before. It is a really charming song, with a little Television Personalities-resemblence, and I really can't imagine anyone hating it.

zeus, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:32 (fourteen years ago) link

u don't need to imagine, because it's really happening

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 13:37 (fourteen years ago) link

Guys, sorry this album pretty much sucks. If there was maybe at least one hook even half as exuberant as "Kids" or "Time to Pretend" I might be willing to give it another chance. This is just kind of meandering and dull, like they willfully smoothed over the most joyful exclamations that made the last one work.

Yes, there is no Kids or Time To Pretend here, but everybody have known that for months. And not enough hooks? Come on, it's a way too much hooks here.
MGMT second album >>> Vampire Weekend second album

That's a bit like saying cold vomit tastes better than warm vomit.

Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:24 (fourteen years ago) link

i think with the idea of hipsters often comes the idea of being "in the know" so your conception of hip hop and r&b rules u out, Doran. suggest u rebut whiney in this wise.

i like this album a lot, but this thread is funny.
it's like listening to people decide whether or not they want to have fun.

johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:33 (fourteen years ago) link

i decided i wanted to have fun, so i stopped listening to the stream of this album

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:35 (fourteen years ago) link

o, snap!

ch-ching!

"i think with the idea of hipsters often comes the idea of being "in the know" so your conception of hip hop and r&b rules u out, Doran. suggest u rebut whiney in this wise."

This is *exactly* what I said to him, but he said that it didn't matter and that I was a hipster anyway.

(In my defence, I don't pretend to know anything about R&B or hip hop from the last decade or so.)

Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:46 (fourteen years ago) link

would anyone mind if we turned this into the fourth Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record thread?

ksh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link

i think this thread should just be destroyed, tbh.

mizzell, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link

you could do a million things in this world to have fun
you could play frisbee with a dog
or kiss a girl
or have a barbeque with some friends on a sunny day
and you suggest that i need this pitiable little collection of songs?

And guess what? I think Pitchfork is going to give it a BM. (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:56 (fourteen years ago) link

are those lyrics to an MGMT song?

ksh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 15:59 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, you know m@tt, always railing off actual mgmt lyrics

ksh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:05 (fourteen years ago) link

when you were trying, among other things, to back up yr writer's claim that rihanna was "the archetypal ghetto hustler" in the comments to his "piece", you were pretending to know something abt r&b and hip hop, alas. if u have a new resolution not to do so in the wake of that, all power to you.

harshbuzz to my chilt-on (zvookster), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link

Look, you dull witted cretin. It says about 58 times I think he was entirely WRONG you fucking dullard.

All I said was that he was not a racist. Try reading before mouthing off. I do NOT think that Rhianna is an archetypal ghetto hustler...

Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Johnnyo could you please stop condemning people who hate on this album as unfun? I don't think this album is meant to represent fun and at any rate being fun is a really lame defense going for it.

you don't think you were trying to back him up? ok then. the comments speak for themselves.

harshbuzz to my chilt-on (zvookster), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I was - QUITE CLEARLY - attacking the suggestion that I allowed racist writers to pen for The Quietus.

Oh look, here's a quote from me: "I don't think Rhianna is an archetypal ghetto hustler." Fancy that.

Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:28 (fourteen years ago) link

here's another, there are more

"Yeah, how in God's name could you ever apply such a blinkered term to someone who's recorded with Jay-Z, signed to Def Jam, collaborated on an Memphis Bleek album named after a housing project, released an album called 'Good Girl, Gone Bad', sings about killing a boyfriend in 'Unfaithful' and the wholesome 'Rehab'."

Can we save that battle for another thread fellas? We're trying not to enjoy MGMT in here thanks.

Xpost: quite. I'd just like to say thanks to dickwad for point several thousand people back over to my site. Cheers.

Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:36 (fourteen years ago) link

and by "another thread" he means let's put it in a box and dump it in a river

what's pooping ahn (some dude), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:38 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe put MGMT's new record that haven't heard yet in the box too

ksh, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:39 (fourteen years ago) link

ok but i wanna scratch off that cover first

facepalm death (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:42 (fourteen years ago) link

yes iirc trolling for hits was your real defense of that piece.

harshbuzz to my chilt-on (zvookster), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

you guys wanna talk about the new deftones record instead?

And guess what? I think Pitchfork is going to give it a BM. (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:46 (fourteen years ago) link

the only rationale for not liking this album i've read on this thread is "it doesn't have the hit singlz".
i'd like to talk about what's ACTUALLY on the record.
i'm not saying this album is Blonde on Blonde, but you guys are starting to sound like my mom for christ's sake.

all i've been getting so far are a bunch of "withering" generic chandler comebacks like "could i BEEE anymore this record sucks???"

johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Dude, its okay if we don't like a record. I hated the first listen, so I'm not going to sit through it again just to make you feel better.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:08 (fourteen years ago) link

XPost: I've listened to it four times now.

Ok. Here are a few for starters. Its psychedelia is unpsychedelic. Instead it is twee, mannered, goofy and aimless. To the extent that it makes a Flight Of The Conchords LSD music parody sound like The Calico Wall by comparison.

Doran, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:10 (fourteen years ago) link

thank you doran! see, this is what i'm looking for. that is an interesting observation! you know how to make them, you win!

chandler dude above him, you are the loser today!

johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Good grief.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:15 (fourteen years ago) link

exactly!

johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link

i agree about the psychedelia thing. i think it's interesting for a band go for psychedelia and miss the target so completely. that is one of the reasons i like these jokers.

johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:18 (fourteen years ago) link

it reminds me of when pearl jam did "art" on Vitalogy.

johnnyo, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Seriously johnnyo, fuck off. K?

music tagged psychedelic is rarely actually psychedelic, in my experience. most of the time it just denotes use of phasers and late 60's vibes.

facepalm death (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:23 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, i imagine these dudes sitting in their dashkekis and telling the producer they want more reverb.
