maiden have gotta be one of the most consistent bands around, tho. just about everything they've ever put out has been pretty solid. I don't even mind the blaze bailey years.

and yeah, they're

quality varies more wildly with sabbath/priest. which can be fun and surprising (never say die) or... not (turbo).

original bgm, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:10 (sixteen years ago)

lol, meant to write this:

and yeah, they're [maiden] just so much fun live

original bgm, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:11 (sixteen years ago)

actually, I haven't listened to turbo since I was 15 or so and I know it has some boosters around here. I prob should listen again.

and even though it's been a few years, these lyrics will always stay with me:

You say I waste my life away
But I live it to the full
How would you know anyway
You're just mister dull

Joanna Newsom joke goes here

Prefacing this with an "I love Joanna Newsom & her music," but:

I tried listening to Joanna Newsom once. Not any of the albums, I just watched a YouTube clip of her performance on the Jimmy Fallon show, and it wasn't so much "good" or "bad" as inexplicable. Her aesthetic is utterly alien and incomprehensible to me - I will never voluntarily listen to her music again, because there was literally nothing about it that was appealing. At the same time, there was nothing particularly offensive about it. It was just utterly weird and disconcerting, like watching someone with major cognitive impairment perform acrobatics. You want to applaud, you want to be encouraging, but at the same time there's a great sadness to the whole thing.

this is madness, btw

richie aprile (rockapads), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 16:11 (sixteen years ago)

Turbo is not a great album by any stretch of the imagination, but I think it is defensible. It's certainly fun, and it has a few genuine gems -- the title track and that chilling, criminally overlooked "Out in the Cold." Even the dopey hair metal tunes like "Parental Guidance" and "Wild Nights" are incredibly catchy. It's just a definite oddity in their catalog. However, it TROUNCES the tepid Ram It down, which, with the exception of the title track and the stunning "Blood Red Skies," is almost entirely unlistenable.

I think there are at least three or four really good songs on Ram It Down (wasn't it originally supposed to be the second half of a two-disc set, with Turbo being Disc One? I thought I remembered hearing that somewhere), including the awesomely hilarious cover of "Johnny B. Goode."

Joanna Newsom? Justin Beiber? MIA? What the fuck thread am I on?

Mordy, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

I love "Out in the Cold". Turbo's not a bad hard rock record at all.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

I dig turbo quite a bit, but im not going to lie, a lot of that is youthful lawnmowing with my walkman on nostalgia.

First and Last and Safeways ™ (jjjusten), Wednesday, 24 March 2010 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

I'll never forget the feeling of disappointment when that album came out though...they followed the very heavy and chilly Defenders with what pretty much amounts to a pop record. "We waited two years for this?"

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:22 (sixteen years ago)

I have very fond memories of Turbo. Saw them for the first time on that tour, and it was the first time anyone ever shared a joint with me (I was 13). Very fond memories of singing "Parental Guidance" at the top of my lungs and looking around while yelling "Fuck yeah!" between songs. The older gents who got me and my friend stoned kept us out of trouble and stopped my friend from falling off the upper deck.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

Picked up Triptykon's debut today. Quite an album! It's exactly what I had hoped - picking up where Monotheist left off and pummeling along without faltering. Adrien - I agree with your twitter comment that his clean voice does sound a bit like Peter Murphy at times, which is more than fine with me.I also like that Mr. Warrior provides little notes on each of the songs along with the lyrics. Nice addition to reward people buying physical product.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 19:37 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to shell out for the actual Triptykon album, the design sounds incredible. It's not out in Canada for another week, though.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 20:19 (sixteen years ago)

Canada: insufficiently morbid.

Meanwhile, for those of us who haven't seen it yet...

I think he's going for an inscrutable Bonnie Prince Billy thing. Not working; looks half-paralyzed.

for some reason the first thing i thought was James Hetfield.

"And as far as the Priest/Maiden divide goes, Priest have better albums but Maiden kills 'em live."

I've never seen either live, but I have no doubt that this is true.

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

i saw Dillinger last night ....dunno that I categorize them as metal but it reinforces my stereotype of metalheads that attend concerts.

At one point, while waiting for DEP to take the stage, a song by Acid Bath was playing over the loudspeaker, and one of the metalheads behind me starts screaming YEAAAAA, ACID BATH!!!! YEAAAAAAAA!!!!! and starts screaming along with the lyrics to the song and headbanging.

I'm not even fully convinced that he wasn't in some drug induced state and thought they were actually performing...

i haven't heard a burzum album to date because when he was in his heyday I refused to listen to him because of the Euronymous murder and his neo-nazism but I grew to realize that made me a hypocrite given the nature of my cd collection.

so...best Burzum cd to start with if I were to start sinning and listen?

OK, I've quickly warmed to the new Cathedral and Negura Bunget, but the one I'm really surprised by is the new Poisonblack. They're sliding towards hard rock, and parts sound like an updated Deep Purple as much as anything (maybe I just mean there's some Hammond-y organ), but man does Ville Laihiala sound great. Something like a midpoint between UFO and Heaven & Hell.

glenn mcdonald, Thursday, 25 March 2010 02:38 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I just got done reading Miles Davis' autobiography and it made me feel like I would be a huge ol' hypocrite if I started getting all indignant about shady things artists do in their personal lives. NOT AT ALL to compare murder with Miles' rep, but in my book it is 10000% not okay to ever ever smack a girl around, but I'm not about to chuck out Bitches Brew or On the Corner.

And maybe its a good thing for dB to cover Varg? I mean, maybe a lot of kids out there that keep seeing the Burzum logo around need to know the full story behind the man - which sometimes I wonder if is as widespread as it is for us internet metal nerds.

Just thinking out loud here, I don't know.

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 25 March 2010 04:10 (sixteen years ago)

It sells magazines. And gets people talking. Simple business. Who can really blame them? I don't even care about Burzum (at all really) and I've already posted on the topic like 3 times in 2 days.

there was a thread on the decibel forum about terrorizer and their burzum cover and this is by far my favorite post:

Black metal has a disturbing lack of satan and a needed plate of shut the fuck up stew.

Listening to the new Cathedral album now. If you like it, I recommend you check out Uriah Heep's Wake the Sleeper, from 2008.

I heard one of the funniest ever rock prank stories the other day concerning Uriah Heep inviting a fan to appear live with them the other day. Just want to stand it up before I go on. (It's probably quite well known, but it came from one of the perpetrators and probably bears repeating regardless.)

Favourite Heep right here:

And do you know when I heard it? The other day. D'oh.
