I thought they would release whole batches of them. Not one at a time...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 27 September 2004 17:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I suspect the next three will be announced soon. Anyway, ABOUT FUCKING TIME.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 September 2004 17:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe Staring At The Sea/Standing On A Beach will get a delluxx edition which will do a zing on all the non-album singles like Killing An Arab, etc.? Join The Dots was supposed to take care of all the B-sides, surely.. but... who knows.

JapaneseBaby, Monday, 27 September 2004 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Or maybe Boys Don't Cry [U.S.] will get its own weird delluxx reissue too??

JapaneseBaby, Monday, 27 September 2004 18:17 (nineteen years ago) link

which would make the use of Boys and Jumping here stupidly redundant. so not out of the realm of possibility given 10:15 is currently on this, Join The Dots and Standing On A Beach...

kephm, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 13:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, this is the wrong thread and all, but I'm currently watching The Deftones do "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" from the Icon show and WOW.

Can we get a REAL Cure tribute album plz? Preferably with this on it?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:12 (nineteen years ago) link

ALso, because I am sad and in a listy mood, here are the most underrated Cure songs off of each album (ie, that song that you come back to and think "oh wow, this is really brilliant but I never hear people talk about it"):

TIB/BDC: "Another Day"
SS: "Secrets"
F: "Doubt"
P: "A Short Term Effect"
JW: "The Dream"
TT: "Wailing Wall"
THOTD: "Screw"
KMKMKM: "The Snakepit"
D: "Last Dance"
W: "To Wish Impossible Things"
WMS: "Trap"
B: "The Loudest Sound"
TC: "Taking Off"

Not that I'm jealous. Grr!

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Bless you sir. I will have some viewing to do tonight (not today, as work would frown on cranked volume).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Well 'Taking Off' is the next single, isnt'it? But yeah, 'Snakepit', 'Secret's, 'Wailing Wall' and 'The Dream' are some of my faves.
I'm listening to the live in Paris '96 boot right now. This is great...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:39 (nineteen years ago) link

"Taking Off" is the Euro single but I've read a lot of online grumbling about how it's horrible when in fact it's fantastic.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:43 (nineteen years ago) link

i will never tire of 'the snakepit'
what did they play it live once this past tour, those lucky ohio folks

kephm, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Well I'll join the grumbling, it's the one song I mind on the last one.. The overlooked gem on that would be 'I don't know what's going on'

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Those are both great though! I like both of those a lot more than (for example) "Us Or Them" and "alt.end". People also grumble about "Fake" which MAKES NO SENSE TO ME AT ALL.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Does anybody know if this reissue will be coming out in North America as well? That "Deluxe Edition" series is a Universal Music thing, and all those albums are on Warner Music here. I'd read somewhere that Rhino (Warner's reissue arm) had pushed the Boys Don't Cry through Pr0nography reissues back to perhaps as late as 2006.

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 17:44 (nineteen years ago) link

2006? WTF

kephm, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 18:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Dear God not 200-fucking-6. AAAAARRRRGGHHHHHHH

Good list, Dan - "To Wish Impossible Things", "Last Dance", and "The Loudest Sound" are godly, and "Taking Off" is one of the better songs off the latest. But I'll add to the list of "Fake" grumbling, that song is atrocious. As for the other recent b-sides, "Truth Goodness & Beauty" is ruined by the soupy production, but "This Morning" is quite good (I'm a sucka for "Homesick"-style tinkly piano).

Sansai, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:21 (nineteen years ago) link

The production is "Truth Goodness & Beauty" isn't great, I agree, but that soaring held phrase with only one detectable catch breath in it! WOW!

"Taking Off" is great because Robert decided to use "2 Late" as its template rather than "Friday I'm In Love".

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Upon relistening, "Truth Goodness & Beauty" could've been spectacular with a more psychedelic arrangement and a respectable amount of treble. Wow on the vocals indeed.

Sansai, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I want more 'Fake' and 'Trap' - like material

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 22:12 (nineteen years ago) link

next batch of remasters apparently pushed back to March 2005...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh I do love this band. All the various complaints above about how the fourth disc was crap are rendered invalid due to the presence of "Possession," "Coming Up," both versions of "Signal to Noise" and the alternate mixes of "This is a Lie," 'Out of This World" and "Maybe Someday."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 November 2004 05:55 (nineteen years ago) link

half way through the first disc, I'm realizing that either:
-I really don't like the Cure as much as I thought.
-or-
-There is a lot of unnecessary shit in this collection.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Just wait until you hear the second half of the first disc. Then, if you're still feeling the same way then you probably don't like the Cure as much as you thought you did.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:15 (nineteen years ago) link

(Since the second option is impossible. Then again, I am biased.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, it is improving.. However, I don't expect to be listening to it often as a collection. A song at a time, here & there ....

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:51 (nineteen years ago) link

its the last one (what 4th) that is best used as a drink coaster

kephm, Friday, 31 December 2004 00:58 (nineteen years ago) link

*reviews tracklist* In my mind, not with these on it:

01. HOME
02. WAITING
04. THIS IS A LIE (palmer remix)
07. WORLD IN MY EYES
08. POSSESSION
09. OUT OF THIS WORLD (oakenfold remix)
10. MAYBE SOMEDAY (hedges remix)
11. COMING UP
12. SIGNAL TO NOISE (acoustic version)
13. SIGNAL TO NOISE
15. A FOREST (plati/slick version)

Again, though, I am biased.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 December 2004 01:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I think CD4 is the second best disc in the collection (after CD1, of course). I was in no way expecting it to be that good.

In fact, I'm listing to "Maybe Someday" right now (with CD1 and CD4 queued up in Winamp)! Funny how that sort of thing happens when threads get revived, huh?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 31 December 2004 01:09 (nineteen years ago) link

true enough my friend-(oh i just can not get into 'signal to noise' at all!)
as i've said before, the whole thing is worth it for the flexi pop version of lament alone. & the booklet is packed with some good bits.

what has been reissued already? other than BoysDontCry (cause i think its the bonus tracks on these, that i need)

xpost: yeah i just put it on myself, been a few months

That's it so far -- the next set (17 through Pornography) is not yet confirmed for release but rumor suggests February or March.

oh good, that works with my student-loan-paying battered and bruised bank account.

i'm glad to hear im not the last man on earth still using Winmp

kephm, Friday, 31 December 2004 01:24 (nineteen years ago) link

People don't use Winamp anymore? Did I not get the memo?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 31 December 2004 01:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Hopefully someone will find this, I'm just wondering if Join the Dots contains all the b-sides off the officially released singles. I mean I see that it doesn't have the extended version of Just One Kiss, etc and remixes of the singles, but does it contain at least a version of every officially released b-side. I've decided I'm interested in collecting their 12"s and I'd like to start with the ones with b-sides not included here (since I plan to buy Join the Dots soon). Of course I could do the research, but I'm at work and I'll bet someone already knows this.

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:53 (nineteen years ago) link

The things the box set is missing that spring to mind are:

"Primary" (Red Mix)
"Let's Go To Bed" (Milk Mix)
various "Wrong Number" mixes
"Gone!" (Ultraliving mix)
"Spilt Milk"
"Watching Me Fall" (Massive Attack remix)
2004 tracks

There are some other WMS-era remixes that are missing (at least one other remix of "Gone!", a remix of "Strange Attraction" and a remix of "The 13th") and I think there was a live version of "100 Years" that was on "The Hanging Garden" 12".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks Ghost of Dan. But most of everything other than remixes and post-WMS stuff is here? Thats great. Thanks so much.

matt2 (matt2), Friday, 1 April 2005 19:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's pretty comprehensive up through Blooflowers.
