OK OK. I underestimated this "Turn the Lights Off" track, but I'm not going for this "In Love With the DJ" one. BLAAAH.
Cassie, Based on those first three tracks, this could be my number one album of the year. Don't fuck up! <3 -tape store

Shit, I never heard Me&U before I clicked on this thread. So daringly empty, Its basically her and that snare for the first minute. I dig minimalism.
― I know, right?, Saturday, 20 October 2007 12:28 (sixteen years ago) link
uh, not to keep bumping this, but I just listened to "Sometimes" with the bass up. There's this fucking amazing growling noise going on throughout the entire thing. AWESOME.
― Tape Store, Saturday, 27 October 2007 01:41 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah, "Sometimes" is still the best leaked song IMO... followed by "Turn The Lights Off"
The album is due out in February now, btw.

The first single from her new album is called "Official Girl". Produced by Danja, should leak any day now...

jeez, you guys sure know how to pick a random-ass singer to obsess over. I just saw Step Up 2 The Streets and she's only in it for like 5 minutes, but I'll leave it up to you to decide whether that's worth camping outside the movie theatre for.
― Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:05 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah i respect you two dudes but this cassie obsession boggles me
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:22 (sixteen years ago) link
'me + u' is classic for all time but i don't see much beyond that tbh
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:24 (sixteen years ago) link
Tape Store has been notoriously SUSPECT getting all !!!!!!!! about 'produced by danja' is pretty weird
that said, j0rdan ... "Is It You"? She's got some great other tracks, its just
― deej, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:28 (sixteen years ago) link
tbh my interest was peaked by produced by danja
i mean he coaxed a good song out of lifeless 07 britney, i don't see why he couldn't do the same for cassie
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:34 (sixteen years ago) link
plus last year alone he had production credits on the only two good songs on the timbaland album, 2 of the 4 great songs on the t.i. album + we takin over so i'll check for his shit for at least the rest of this year
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 February 2008 05:36 (sixteen years ago) link
but shes already got good producers??? why have we been led to believe anything great will come from this, danja has some great beats, some wack ones, just like anyone else. i dont get why anyone would be all :D !!! DANJAHANDS!!! and i dont even hate the dude like RTC does

This moment when the singer/producer dynamic-duo falters for the first time is usually the beginning of the end of something great though. I mean... great songs have come out of Amerie and Kelis working with producers other than their original partners-in-crime, but there's a whole loss of innoncence / kicked out of Eden vibe to it all isn't there.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 07:20 (sixteen years ago) link
but there's a whole loss of innoncence
but tapestore still likes it! oh wait that was a typo wasnt it.
anwyay yeah SUSPECT isnt the half. hard to fathom how anyone with an appreciation of cassie's uh fragile fortes wouldnt be imagining this collabo with some tredipation - ok granted there've been moments when danja suggests he could be a sensitive match (the offbeat kath mcphee & nikki flores teenpop stuff in particular) but if he goes and does his usual and britneys it she'll just get swallowed right up, surely. even furtadoing it would probably be too strong (not to mention it being straight uninteresting).
4 the record i think danja is potentially a monster producer but kinda needs to get out from under the timbrella now, especially following his showstopping cameo on 'i get naked'. otherwise yes wearisomely overrated, and never more so than when caught up in some tryhard's "nu-hiphouse omg omg i like dance" baby steps cobblers.

― r|t|c, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 14:41 (sixteen years ago) link
LOL. I'm not obsessed with Cassie, I just think her first album is excellent (in spite of her weak vocals), so of course I'm looking forward to the follow-up.
― The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link
I'm a bit obsessed, yeah. Like Brainwasher, I'm a huge fan of her debut (and again, moreso because of Ryan Leslie, but Cassie still contributed a lot to the record...shame Just Friends didn't make the cut). It's a really consistent album.
What excites me now, though, is how much growth both Cassie and Leslie have shown since the debut. All the leaks are of a much higher quality than the ones that appear on her album...better production, better, more confident and more emotional singing and better songs (as said upthread, I prob. prefer "Is It You" to "Me & U")
They're a great duo, the closest, i think, we've come to an Aaliyah/Timbo situation. So yeah, I'm extremely excited about the album. And Danja? Well, he played a huge role in two of my favorite records of the '00s (my #1, FutureSex/LoveSounds, and Blackout)
btw, Cassie sounds a hell of a lot more exciting than other R&B favorites like, say, Amerie, who haven't really grown much from record to record.

THX everyone for not pointing out the complete fuckup in my post (that Just friends song = dif. cassie...one who has a bigger voice but a more soulless one). or maybe thx for not reading.

"Is It You" is kinda suck. No thanks, Cassie hype kru.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 27 March 2008 09:54 (sixteen years ago) link
'Thirsty' is nice but not one of her best. In some respects it sounds like it might be a deliberate re-write of 'Is It You' (some of the chord progressions are very similar).
― dubmill, Saturday, 29 March 2008 00:20 (sixteen years ago) link
"Official Girl" just passed "No Air" on my singles-of-the-year list (putting it at #1)
Re: Cassie vs. Karina...well, it's obv. no contest for me. Karina adds nothing new to the track. Vocally, she holds quite a bit of potential, but this song doesn't need any vocal gymnastics. The beat is so lush (omg the simple synth melody) and intricate (listen to the goddamn drums!) that showboating only detracts from its beauty. Cassie's understated vocal works so much better; she sounds like a part of the song, not just an element floating atop it...
I could go on and on about this...fuck, it's so interesting. At first I was excited about Danja working with Cassie, but then I worried that he'd give her one of his weaker beats (y'know, since he's super busy and she's Cassie). But to my surprise, Danja sounds brilliant here, one of his best beats, i think, and his vocal is good, too...probably better than "Is It You?"
SOOOOOO excited for rest of the album...

you are burning with such youthful enthusiasm that i feel like jess harvell jr. trying to grinch it so ill keep it short - this song is kinda zzzzz to me and beat is pretty clutch by numbers
but u know ... opinions4u!!!

yeah this song is just so-so for me. is Danja starting to do vocals on tracks that sound like Timbo now? eww. was there ever any indication that Kanye would actually be working on Cassie's album, back when he was putting her in videos and on magazine covers and everything? I could see her voice working well w/ his current production style.

STOP RUINING IT FOR ME.
― fields of salmon, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 20:04 (sixteen years ago) link
Sry you guys don't like it. There's something about it that reminds me of Lloyd's "You," actually.
is Danja starting to do vocals on tracks that sound like Timbo now? eww.
Naw, his voice is more pleasant, I think. I don't find it annoying at all. He was on Britney's album like this, too, unless I have a terrible memory. Also, I realllly like the "Danja..and the....CLUTCH!" intro (have they used that anywhere else???)
was there ever any indication that Kanye would actually be working on Cassie's album, back when he was putting her in videos and on magazine covers and everything? I could see her voice working well w/ his current production style.
God, I hope not. His current production style is almost as bad as his MC skills. Maybe worse (so much of Graduation only sounded good for two spins...e.g. "Champion," "The Glory"). . If this album is 75% Ryan Leslie, 25% other people, it should be perfect.
― Tape Store, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 22:48 (sixteen years ago) link
Actually, upon further reflection "Official Girl" is like the most Hot Chip-like of the Cassie singles (and here I employ Hot Chip in the derogative). But I still like it though.

i don't think it's danja on 'official girl'. sounds like the same dude from the tiffany evans - 'girl gone wild' intro and that one was produced by brian kidd.

how is that Tiffany Evans album?
― Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 20 April 2008 15:54 (sixteen years ago) link
most Hot Chip-like
??? I've only heard a few Hot Chip singles, so if those aren't representative of their sound, ignore this, but what exactly does that mean? Are you talking about the production or the vocals? The HC songs I've heard sounded kinda soulless, and I wouldn't call "Official Girl" remotely soulless (or at the very least, it's no more soulless than any other Cassie song).
