I think Chuck and I have tried armwrestling posters into liking this and "Dirty Work" for mths now.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:02 (nineteen years ago) link

A little contrariness perhaps in order - I quite like the title track and "Dance (Pt. 1)." Not so sure about the rest of the album or how it's better than Some Girls apart from the fact that it includes those two tracks. Haven't heard it in a while, though.

And, of course, to put it in perspective, it was THE STONES and naturally none of it touches the epic quality of something like "Street Fighting Man" or "Gimme Shelter."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:28 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think anyone is, Tim, but the album's relative unimportance in the scheme of things is most refreshing. This is one album unencumbered by delusions of grandeur.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 21:34 (nineteen years ago) link

'Dirty Work' is frigging excellent. Christgau's stuff on it is definitive. (He wrote a longer piece than just the Consumer Guide entry in which he gave the album an A.)

As for 'Emotional Rescue,' has anyone mentioned "Let Me Go"? "Maybe I'll become a playboy, hang around in gay bars, and mooooove to the West Side of town."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:57 (nineteen years ago) link

I wrote a longer piece defending "Dirty Work" not too long ago:

http://stylusmagazine.com/feature.php?ID=1333

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I like a few of the songs on Dirty Work and I can see why its unique nature would appeal (Jagger on vicious auto-pilot, sound zonked to the gills) but man I can't go with the A talk. I think it's a chore to slog through as a whole.

And dude, Alfred, while I understand most of that piece there are SO instrumental concessions to the marketplace on this album. Those drums? It's not that it wasn't calculated to win, it's that it didn't win.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:24 (nineteen years ago) link

The sequencers and drum machines on "Back To Zero" are the only noxious concessions to the marketplace (and, ok, the synths on "Winning Ugly"), and even that's redeemed by the guitar fills and Jagger's ambivalence. Yeah, the drums are beefed up, but what else is new? It's Steve Lillywhite, it's the '80s. When I hear "Hold Back," "Winning Ugly,' and "One Hit To The Body," I'm struck by how scared shitless Jagger sounds amidst the strum and drang of Keith and Ronnie's guitars; he ain't a young turk anymore, his last solo album wasn't a big seller, these guys can't dress, let'em have it. Even more than the classic Stones ballads, these are more compelling glimpses into whatever soul Jagger's got.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh I agree re: soul of Jagger.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I just think you have to care about the soul of the Stones more than I do to enjoy burning through it. It's no shock to me that Robert Christgau loves it.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm cringing that I actually wrote Jagger has a "soul."

(then again, if you listen to "Undercover," Jagger's ideal of vulnerability is to make breakfast-table remarks about Latin Americans and to make us notice the hot cum dripping on the girl's thighs. The real Ying Yang Twin.)

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Alfred, where are you on 'Steel Wheels'? That's where they lost me for the most part, though I thought 'Voodoo Lounge' made some good excuses for itself.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 2 June 2005 23:57 (nineteen years ago) link

It was the first Stones album I owned, so I'm simpatico. "Mixed Emotions" is an amazing song (and their last great single), and I'm partial to "Almost Hear You Sigh," which has got some interesting chord changes. But it's more of a concession to the marketplace (in this case, those old-timers blubbering about the death of the Stones as a cultural force) than "Dirty Work."

Jagger's "Wandering Spirit" seems more, er, "authentic" (a word I use with caution around Mr D).

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I kept 'Wandering Spirit,' but I never pull it out.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I have a theory: Pearl Jam suddenly started recording more consistent albums around "No Code," when Eddie Vedder started playing more electric rhythm guitar. Same thing happend with the Stones around "Some Girls" when Mick strapped on his own.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:13 (nineteen years ago) link

I love this album (Emotional Rescue, that is). "All About You" has made me weep many, many times. But Alfred, you still haven't sold me on Dirty Work. And I want to like it, I really do. I just can't.

That picture pretty much sums up 1980.

If for some reason you ever need to reference that year again, just use that photograph.

Example:
Ronald Reagan was elected in http://www.sympathyforthedevils.com/studiopathe_mick79.JPG, defeating Jimmy Carter by 440 votes...

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 3 June 2005 15:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I think the three big disco Stones singles ("Miss You," this and "She's So Cold"--though I guess the last is more new-wavey) would all make my Stones POX. They fit the genre perfectly.

Anyway, this song is all about Mick--I'm torn between his falsetto and his spoken word breakdown ("I will be your knight in shiiiining aaahhhhhhmooorrrrr") being the highlight of the song. Utterly fantastic.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 22 April 2006 05:50 (eighteen years ago) link

gosh, this alb so much better than the ridiculously vaunted "Some Girls" ... never understand that SG love. I think all true Stones fans get it. This one is the bomb. For one thing, no stupid "Beast of Burden" to ruin the experience. Man, does this thing kill Some Girls (not a contrarion opinion whatsoever, btw .. just appraising the boys instrumentally/musically on this one .. you can have your frickin 'Some Girls' ... never need to hear it again honestly)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 22 April 2006 06:14 (eighteen years ago) link

It drives me crazy that some people don't like Emotional Rescue. I mean, it's really hard to understand.

it's truly way better than Some Girls..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 22 April 2006 08:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Some Girls has the edge because of Shattered, Miss You, and Before They Make Me Run, but Emotional Rescue is great too. They perfected Charlie's drum sound on those two albums. (I remember Mick & Keef giving the engineer Chris Kimsey buckets of credit.)

Taylor, Saturday, 22 April 2006 14:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I always wanted to hear a 12" version of "Slave" off of Tattoo You. That would have been a nice edition to the Stones' dance singles.

Y'know, reading that Stylus piece on Dirty Work does make me want to check it out again but Alfred, do you really think the record has the "most venomous guitar sound of the Stones’ career"? Thems are some strong, strong words. I'm not sure it can be more venemous than "Stray Cat Blues" with that piercing ending.

Totally. Kimsey also got a great sound out of the three-pronged guitar attack.

there's a fun edit of this by one of the in flagranti dudes; cuts in bits of the piano from 'she's a rainbow' and stuff.

i've still never worked out the accent mick's trying to affect at the end there. i know nothing else from the album other than 'she's so cold'.

Aside from those two dynamite singles, the rest of the disc was pretty unmemorable. Classic music video, too, BTW.

Jagger could so be Eric Burdon doing that coda - all he needed to do was self-consciously namecheck some revered black performer, something Burdon was wont to do. Like maybe Bob Marley, or Kurtis Blow if he were really on top of things.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 7 April 2008 14:10 (sixteen years ago) link

love this record! The singles, "Dance pt 1" "Let Me Go" and one of Keith's finest moments ("All About You") are all awesome. Actually, take away the rote blooze "Down in a Hole" and the Indian Girl silliness (which really isn't that bad...) and it's pretty top shelf all around. I'll take it over B&B or GHS any day.

Probably "Summer Romance" or "Where The Boys Go"--both of which, incidentally, are titled like 80s T&A teen comedies.

two years pass...

I've listened to five Stones albums today, and this is the first "bad" one, IMO

"All About You," "Dance (pt 1)," and the title track are OK (I'm not big on that disco bassline in rock songs, but that's my problem). But most of the others are.... not good

It's unexpected b/c the two albums that flank it in their discography are very strong

I can't get with anyone who doesn't love "Summer Romance," which should've been a top five single. The three-guitar attack, CHarlie's drumming, Jagger's insolent delivery -- man. "Let Me Go" and "Where the Boys Go" almost as good.
