Did you in fact lift my luggage (dyao), Friday, 7 May 2010 15:45 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe we need a new thread.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 7 May 2010 15:47 (fourteen years ago) link

It's growing on me. Definitely their weakest album. But I still like this band and I love seeing them live.

Benjamin-, Friday, 7 May 2010 20:47 (fourteen years ago) link

this record is execrable!

ksh, Friday, 7 May 2010 20:51 (fourteen years ago) link

rip broken social scene -- LP4. an album this good deserved two threads.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 8 May 2010 21:17 (fourteen years ago) link

ksh, Saturday, 8 May 2010 21:19 (fourteen years ago) link

(p.s. you can just copy/paste the URL to a thread w/o using the usual URL message board code to link to it & the software will automatically put the thread's name in its place in yr post, fwiw)

deleting it track by track, as they each finish. RIP BSS

ksh, Saturday, 8 May 2010 22:29 (fourteen years ago) link

(re: upthread recc) If you haven't checked out the Radio Dept. album, ksh, it really is great. It's been on heavy rotation in my apartment for the last month.

Mordy, Saturday, 8 May 2010 22:30 (fourteen years ago) link

ksh, it's not that bad!

love this post

ksh, Sunday, 9 May 2010 00:45 (fourteen years ago) link

It's not that bad. I like a few of the songs, but I am still very surprised that it has received such positive reviews. It is just sort of there. There is nothing extraordinary, beautiful or surprising about this album. I understand that plenty of people on this board would say the same thing about their previous albums, but this one just seems totally lifeless.

But it interests me for some reason. I keep listening to it, even just to figure out what they were thinking. For instance, the song "Chase Scene." It sounds nothing like BSS, which could potentially be a good thing, but it's not. It just sounds like they were stoned and were like, "hey doesn't wah pedal this sound funny. It like a car chase scene in a 70s movie."

Benjamin-, Sunday, 9 May 2010 05:35 (fourteen years ago) link

I think I said it on the other BSS thread but I think the music on "Chase Scene" sounds like Tortoise.

"Nothing surprising" is about right. I mean, it's Broken Social Scene, no mistake. I'd like to survey all the people who are stoked on the newest Spoon and New Pornographers albums, but are left cold by BSS because it fails to differentiate itself from their other stuff. I don't mean that in a snide way--some bands just seem able to get away with making versions of the same album over and over. Others don't. I'm liable to come down on either side of the fence depending on the day or the band. I don't know the secret.

Benjamin, this

is more or less exactly how I feel.

uhh, songwriting?

Cosmo Vitelli, Sunday, 9 May 2010 20:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah but the quality of BSS's songwriting on the new one is not so far removed from their last.

scott pgwp (pgwp), Sunday, 9 May 2010 21:22 (fourteen years ago) link

their last album was a mess. the only time it broke through the haze is when they let the pieces breathe by clearing the dense production tricks and layers (e.g., the song hotel, i think, tho i can't really recall).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 9 May 2010 21:31 (fourteen years ago) link

it was awesome BECAUSE it was a mess!

ksh, Sunday, 9 May 2010 22:29 (fourteen years ago) link

it was an awesome mess.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 9 May 2010 22:31 (fourteen years ago) link

unlike their new record, which has been deleted from my computer. just got a lil' world sick there, y'all!

ksh, Monday, 10 May 2010 00:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Even the Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning solo albums were way better than this

calstars, Monday, 10 May 2010 00:53 (fourteen years ago) link

The Kevin Drew solo LP was pretty good, as far as I recall. Didn't quite feel like a solo jaunt, either. Canning's was more clearly a different beast than BSS.

the record is more or less

that picture is confusing - 1. why does the guitarist have a podium on the stage, and 2. why is he crouching on it

where he found forty other likeminded folk who proceeded to simultaneously release a rock record & plead for forgiveness for inflicting said record on indie rock stans such as myself who they were already aware would be terribly disappointed at their lukewarm effort
