this song used to annoy me because of the line "only stupid people are breeding". i guess it was supposed to do that. the hook is pretty undeniable... it sounds like the dandy warhols with a dork from a teen movie singing, which as a concept is x1000 better than the dandy warhols.

Seam M OTM about the Long Winters album. Recommended power pop with some incredibly catchy choruses.

thank you so much for reminding me about this song. i once was lost but now i'm found.

Felcher (Felcher), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 19:52 (twenty years ago) link

OK it's better than any Dandy Warhols song but we don't have be hating on the Dandys. They's quite the professional and consistent combo.

I really should listen to King James Version again (I have in a big box of promos somewhere) but Sad Sweetheart Of The Rodeo was a nice song.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 02:31 (twenty years ago) link

This is better back to back with the Refreshments' "Banditos."

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 02:36 (twenty years ago) link

Please do not ever mention "Banditos" again.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 02:39 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, come now. My wayward youth was spent with Banditos, Harvey Danger, Marcy Playground, Tracy Bonham and all the other wonders of mid '90s commercial-alternative-radio.

I have no capacity to dislike them.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 02:41 (twenty years ago) link

Do you still play with action figures? Something things need to be left in the past, man. Like "Banditos."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 02:43 (twenty years ago) link

Do you still play with action figures?

Haha, I never did. But I do have a Dirk Nowitzki action figure on my desk.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 02:45 (twenty years ago) link

T/S: Marcy Playground v. the Refreshments, who is hated more

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 02:47 (twenty years ago) link

Marcy. Refreshments at least did the King Of The Hill theme.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 02:48 (twenty years ago) link

dirk nowitzki!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 06:40 (twenty years ago) link

get ready to replace that nowitzki figure with an antawn jamison one. the future is now in dallas! (p.s. i haven't heard this song in a while and remember it fondly [perhaps for that very reason])

will g. (will g.), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 12:26 (twenty years ago) link

I'd rather have a Steve Nash figure, complete with long, greasy hair and string to hold it back.

And a Nick Van Exel figure to stand on the side and fume that he got traded to a shitty team.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 15:39 (twenty years ago) link

I hated this song when it came out, but now I don't.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 17:30 (twenty years ago) link

This song strongly irritated me at the time, and I suspect it still would.

Marcy Playground, on the other hand, had a few good tunes.

Sam J. (samjeff), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 17:31 (twenty years ago) link

My mom used to think that Marcy Plaground song said "Asthma, sex and candy".

That is so much better. Wheezing, Kit-Kats and gettin' it on!

yeah, this song is all right! i sometimes see one of the guys from harvey danger at shows in chicago. i guess he lives here now.

an interesting taking sides might be this vs. "semi-charmed life."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:06 (eighteen years ago) link

"semi-charmed life" is a perfect example of a song i probably "hated" when it came out because i thought i was supposed to or something, but really sounds great now.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:07 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't think i ever actually hated "flagpole sitta," tho, because i was able to appreciate it as a novelty/one-hit wonder (whereas third eye blind signalled the horrible mediocrity of mass culture, i guess?)

What a terrible song/band.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 16 November 2006 22:51 (seventeen years ago) link

you know what? the song/band ain't so bad. Harvey Danger was alright; not the greatest, but far from terrible. this song ruled alternative radio's playlist (along w/ the irritating "Rockefeller Skank") the summer it came out (1998). it was probably the last time that alternative music was fun and not-so contrived. not long after that things went bad; very bad in fact. Korn, Limp Bizkit, and all that horrible shit took over (at least here in LA on KROQ). w/ the exception of The Strokes/White Stripes explosion, things haven't been so fun since. give me Harvey Danger or Marcy Paygorund over Korn and Limp Bizkit (or Fallout Boy) any day.

I can't help it and love this song. It does seem to be one of those songs that people either love or hate.

Bee OK, Monday, 23 May 2022 23:57 (two years ago) link

I didn't hate it, just thought it was "trying too hard"... I would choose "Sex and Candy" over this one (they sort of go together in my mind).

Then they release "I Don't Write the Songs" instead

Abe Kayfabe (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 03:06 (two years ago) link

Huh, the lead singer wrote a 33 1/3 book about Joni Mitchell.

(not sure that Todd in the Shadows video is a hate watch though, since Todd seems to be on the correct side of this debate)

enochroot, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 03:12 (two years ago) link

i saw him open for Robyn Hitchcock 12 or so years ago, he had some nice tunes and sang harmony during some of Robyn's set. Also met him years later at a book swap at a bar, iirc he brought several Philip Roth books.

JoeStork, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 03:41 (two years ago) link

vg just be glad your brain didn't choose this song as its permanent wake-up alarm. I don't honestly think "Sex and Candy" would have been an improvement but I never got the choice.
