Oh, and what with the Alex Sadkin production, fat reggae-esque-bass and the reggae-influenced percussion, I guess this band sort of belongs here too:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYwEv38AIPE

Which also brings me to wonder whether stuff like International Observer and The Orb fits in here too?

"Genius of Love" obv
― The Reverend, Friday, 21 May 2010 09:02 (fourteen years ago) link
Stevie, you may be right about Junior and Imagination lacking reggae, though I wouldn't call them "just funk" -- Imagination were more disco I'd say, and Junior obviously had a pop Stevie Wonder thing going on.
aw yeah, definitely. and apologies if it seems i'm playing genre cop here. imagination were *weird, and brilliantly so. and 'mama useta say' is a genius single, i've always wanted to search and see if Junior had any other such greatness in his discography.

Thinking lots of British pop-funk stuff from the early '80s (not just Linx, who I mentioned above, but also Junior, the Quick, Imagination, David Grant solo) could fit here as well. (Hot Chocolate obviously a major inspiration for that whole scene.)
Nah, I don't discern much reggae there. Same for Hot Chocolate, I don't think they had any reggae influence at all.

I can't actually see that! Just as well!

It was their first single (on Apple Records) - a reggae cover of 'Give Peace A Chance'. It's terrible btw.

Ah right, I've never heard that before

Can't imagine how you couldn't hear reggae in, say, "Brother Louie."
― xhuxk, Friday, 21 May 2010 13:17 (fourteen years ago) link
This site even calls the Stories version "a cover version of a British pop-reggae hit about an interracial marriage," so my ears can't be completely crazy. (It was apparently also covered by the British reggae band Matumbi, fwiw.)

I can't really remember their version of "Brother Louie" tbh. NickB has just proved they started off as a reggae band, so I can't argue against that! I don't hear too much reggae in their big hits however, but possibly it's the singing that gives them a Caribbean flavour

Have these 2 back-to-back on a playlist I've been addicted to all spring. You really want the extended 12" version of the Jennifer Lara, but this'll have to do.

i think there was a thread like this over at djh a while ago? i think some people referred to a qv track as "cod reggae".

I've started collating a lot of the suggestions on this thread into an epic dj mix. will try and get a YSI soon.
― village idiot (dog latin), Friday, 30 July 2010 08:54 (thirteen years ago) link
Good thread. I actually made a little mix as intro music for a friend's band that starts off like this then goes dub, er then ends in Gregory Isaacs.

Chain Reaction - comprising Bobby Davis, Bruce Ruffin (no relation) and Dave Barker ('Dave' of '...and Ansel Collin')were a strange Philly type soul/ reggae crossover, with great singing - I have two LPs by them, one - Indebted to You - on Gull c 1976 and one a bit later - Chase a Miracle(?). When I got the latter I thought it was a different group of the same name: the first record could have come from Philly, the second unmistakably from JA via NW10...both fine in their own way, though.
