cold war is def my favorite vocal performance

its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Saturday, 29 May 2010 22:25 (thirteen years ago) link

"there's a lot bluster & noise on the album and not much quality songwriting"
^kinda where I'm at; the razzmatazz gets cloying

and I voted for Metropolis as top 10 p+j in 08 and I'm pretty sure this won't make it into my top 20 unless another few listens really changes my perspective... though tightrope might be a top ten single.

i think a more restricted palette served her better; this is nice and it has def high points but after three or four listens I haven't felt as compelled to return to this as, say, Josh Turner or Guido or Ratatat or Ellie Goulding or

btw, nellie calmed down that jazz hands shit over her last two hands and is no longer quite so drastically unfocused and is quietly building a pretty nice discog

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 29 May 2010 23:41 (thirteen years ago) link

"last two hands" = "last two albums"

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 29 May 2010 23:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Haven't really heard much of her stuff, but I'm excited that I'll be seeing her open for Ms Badu tonight.

this record is cool, but sometimes it's a little too "jazz hands" for moi

holy shit, she's touring with Badu?????

i think it's funny how popists basically react like O.G. indie rockers when the uncool kids invade the clubhouse

I'll be in a part of Canada that they won't be swinging through.

the chorus to "cold war" is really amazing

m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 June 2010 16:51 (thirteen years ago) link

"Cold War" is really reminiscent of Gnarls Barkley to me ("Going On" specifically)

drop it like it's hot, Elena (HI DERE), Thursday, 3 June 2010 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

xp Yeah really baffled at people who knock the songwriting on this.

Davek (davek_00), Thursday, 3 June 2010 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

in one song she is "shaking like schizo" in another she is like "schizo running wild"

m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 3 June 2010 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Okay, she was fucking amazing last night opening for Erykah Badu. I am now 100% completely sold and went out to buy the new album and the EP this morning. Since I'm not familiar with all the songs just yet, the only titles I know she played for 100% certain were "Smile" (which was so beautiful, the guitar player she had was pretty good - he looked like what Snoop Dogg would have if he'd have joined the Ramones) and "Tightrope" which closed off her set. Fantastic homage to James Brown, complete with the knee shaking dance and cape thing. She was so energetic and joyful. Loved loved loved her!

Wonder if she's planning to tour the UK, was pretty eager to see her before and that post has made me even more so.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 3 June 2010 17:28 (thirteen years ago) link

she's really amazing live

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

idk if she's still doing this but when i saw her last year, she painted a canvas on stage and threw it into the audience, wet paint and all.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 17:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Does she play with a string/horn section?

rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 3 June 2010 17:31 (thirteen years ago) link

she didn't, but that was a small one-off show so she might next time, now that she has music out in the uk

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 17:33 (thirteen years ago) link

She did not do the painting thing and no, no string/horn section. Very stripped down - drummer, keyboard guy, guitarist, and a couple hooded backup dancers.

seen her twice now and I found that "energetic and joyful" thing a bit canned; she'll absolutely manufacture it if the crowd's not into it.
