Giving a listen to the EP now -- first couple of songs don't quite work for me, comes across as Astbury fronting a band trying to be the Cult. The "Rain" cover is pleasant, though, and the last one is the best, all of Astbury's typical bravura over a big melodramatic slow burn, sounds like it should be the end of a movie.

I bought this last night at the Boris show. And I like it. And I don't particularly enjoy the Cult, so it works on a different level and I'm not sure how. Cover song's great. Fun little stopgap EP, I suppose!

Am seeing Boris tonight. Wonder if they'll play this (actually called "Floor Shaker")

great show. michio kurihara killed it every damn time
― grateful dad (LOLK), Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:28 (thirteen years ago) link
oh, Kurihara is on this tour too? is he like, an "official member" now or something? shit, I would have went tonite if i knew Kurihara was there. Otherwise Boris do nothing for me
― Stormy Davis, Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:37 (thirteen years ago) link
I'm pretty sure he's an official member at least of the touring band. He's been there the last three times I've seen them.
― FRESH MEAT (MFB), Saturday, 14 August 2010 08:38 (thirteen years ago) link
Yup, he's been touring with them since the first time I saw Boris in 2007.
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Saturday, 14 August 2010 17:42 (thirteen years ago) link
So would this BXI EP have been better with a different guest vocalist? I was trying to come up with another frontman who could have done a better job - Glenn Danzig, Chris Cornell - but I think the songs are just weak.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Monday, 16 August 2010 12:46 (thirteen years ago) link
Yup, I'd say it's the songwriting. Last song's decent, and the "Rain" cover is pretty good, but the rest is throwaway.

Kinda feel like we should do an epic re-poll w/ the collabs and new releases included.

agree, but gotta give folks some time to digest the new albums!

I've been binging lately. Might have to with the original Heavy Rocks, but I like both new records.

I have the two new ones arriving this week—probably today—can't wait
anyone heard 'New Album'?

I've heard all three; to me they go Attention Please > New Album > Heavy Rocks.

they are playing bristol sometime soon (unless i already missed it!)
have been thinking re going along - but haven't they changed their style with recent releases ?

A bit but not that much. Go, and I'll buy you a beer there.
― passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Monday, 5 November 2012 22:13 (eleven years ago) link
That was a litt e misleading in that at first I thought Boris was recording an entire Loveless tribute by themselves a la Japancakes. Still I'm actually quite the sucker for Japanese tribute albums, since they often tend to have a least one really off the wall interpretation on them and it's been a while since I've seen any new ones arise.
― MarkoP, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 17:54 (eleven years ago) link
yeah but by the time i shared the status with ned I had realised it was only the one song. I must admit I would have loved it if they had done the whole album.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link
On the other hand, Shonen Knife also contribute a song on there, which seems a bit strange.

Been re-listening to Akuma No Uta and Pink a lot in the last few weeks and I've enjoyed them a hell of a lot. It's been a while. I didn't keep up after Pink - which of the last few albums are most worth my time and money please?
― kraudive, Thursday, 8 August 2013 23:24 (ten years ago) link
Oh I have Rainbow and Altar as well. I should find them in "the box" in the attic.

What is with all these 2011 albums?
Smile [Japanese version, please] is great. I never got into any of those three albums that all came out at the same time, but I was happy when "Pary Boy" came on unexpectedly when I was listening to a failed compilation of mostly year end favorites I had put together. I still haven't heard the album that came out this year.
― _Rudipherous_, Friday, 9 August 2013 12:57 (ten years ago) link
Second the Japanese version of Smile, a less extreme and more poppy version of Akuma and Pink but still heavy and Satan worshipping.
Never bothered much with the 2011 trilogy, but if you like '80s thrash, the full version of "Czechoslovakia" is hella worth tracking down.
― May I Call You Jiggleee? (Leee), Friday, 9 August 2013 15:45 (ten years ago) link
"Pary Boy" of course should have been "Party Boy."
"Pary Boy" looks more like a Butthole Surfers title: "No it's really supposed to be 'Pary Boy!'"
― _Rudipherous_, Friday, 9 August 2013 19:08 (ten years ago) link
How many rock bands as good or better are there, among Boris's contemporaries? Not very many.

the new album rules, maybe my favorite of theirs since smile. the poppier songs are gorgeous and sort of have an... emo feel?
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 17 June 2014 15:11 (ten years ago) link
been leaning in that direction since akuma no uta, imo, but i haven't heard the new one, so maybe you mean in a new way?

It's no "Sometimes," but I think it's more boring than awful. The slow-mo chorus is great.

This is the only Boris album I really like, which is odd considering how pop it is. Stuff like Pink is OK but too cheesy rawkin for my tastes, I try to listen to Flood from time to time but I don't think I have the patience for it.

i really like a lot of their other stuff (probably akuma no uta most), but the daymare version of that record (i.e. the one that begins with "flare") is just so virtuoso and fun. i'm bummed that the far more common 'tearbridge' version's sequencing (and i think alternate mixes at times, iirc?) mess it up
― soyrev, Monday, 18 May 2015 00:18 (nine years ago) link
I forgot that I liked Noise last year which has a fair bit of rawk on it, my own opinions don't make sense sometimes.

i liked a bit of Noise but it's nowhere close to the variety, cohesion and fun of New Album: Daymare Edition *imo*
