! And didn't Chuck say something about how Isis is best seen in a museum...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:10 (twenty years ago) link

Hmm I'm not sure, but I did hear what Dick Riordan said about Isis.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 29 July 2004 19:14 (twenty years ago) link

OH MIGHTY ISIS

RE: !!! show last night

As usual, Deerhoof killed it... I missed Future Pidgeon because they amazingly went on at the scheduled time

and I think the singer of !!! is developing a god-complex. But I got to jump around and get body-checked by lots of KXLUitos.

Maybe I'll listen to the record again as I may change my mind about !!! live show being better than record.

"These extraordinary ensembles pay deep respect to their Indian and Turkish musical heritage by composing for traditional acoustic instruments and vocal styles while adding elegant electronic samples and beats that take the listener on a journey from the past to the future."

nickn is that better than it sounds?

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

I'm sure this was already mentioned but if not:

September 18 (Sat)
M83 (Mute / Gooom), Ulrich Schnauss (City Centre
Offices), Six Parts Seven. Venue: Knitting Factory.
8pm. $13.

Most tempting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:45 (twenty years ago) link

Ned:
I will be at this show for sure...comes right after I'm out in CA, and right before UCI starts up and doesn't make me feel so bad about missing them at the Empty Bottle in Chicago. Though I've heard not so great things about the Knitting Factory.

robots in love (robotsinlove), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:17 (twenty years ago) link

I'll very likely be there. Knitting Factory is fine.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

I'm totally clueless when it comes to LA clubs, so at this point I'm willing to go wherever.

robots in love (robotsinlove), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:20 (twenty years ago) link

knitting factory does in fact suck, but not in a way that would make me never ever want to to go see anything there..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:28 (twenty years ago) link

What sucks about it?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:29 (twenty years ago) link

Friends of mine who see shows there regularly say the venue's gone a bit downhill over time, but the few times I've been there have been okay -- I do recall Stan Ridgway telling Elvis T and I that he was singularly unimpressed with the place recently, though.

Robots: ah yes, you'll be out here soon! We'll have to plot and plan regarding getting you used to hauling yourself up to LA for shows.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:35 (twenty years ago) link

I only have problems with the crowd at the Knitting Factory. From my experience, the venue tends to be filled with people who want to be out doing something as opposed to people who want to see the bands playing. But if you don't mind people talking through someone's set, then there's not really a problem there. This is also due to how "hip" a band currently is.

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago) link

I can't fault them though for the A/C being broken during the sweltering AMT show a few months back, as much as I'd like to...

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:37 (twenty years ago) link

the venue tends to be filled with people who want to be out doing something as opposed to people who want to see the bands playing

haha - So you mean it's like every other venue ever?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:45 (twenty years ago) link

No, actually. It's worse in that regard because it's in Hollywood. ;p

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:46 (twenty years ago) link

So....it's like every other venue?

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:52 (twenty years ago) link

Oh yeah, I forgot about all those fake Hollywood "star f-ers" ruining the authentic live experience, man!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:57 (twenty years ago) link

Is anyone else planning on going to the Animal Collective/Black Dice on Sat. August 28th at the Knitting Factory? I know the Echo show would probably be preferable, vibe-wise, but I live right next door to the Knitting Factory on Sycamore and I was hoping that day to barbecue and go swimming (at my apt. building), and then walk down to the show. Maybe this could be one of these FAPs...? Swimming, hamburgers, eerie and pretty noise?

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:00 (twenty years ago) link

If only to see what the shouting about those two is about, that could be an interesting show. Might be out of town that weekend, we'll see.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:02 (twenty years ago) link

(xposts, etc)

Don't take it personally, Spencer! You're different.

Ben, I'll be at both of those shows.

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 30 July 2004 21:47 (twenty years ago) link

Haha, the thing is, I'm *not*!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:02 (twenty years ago) link

In other Knitting Factory angst, I kinda want to see the Michael Rother show there on Thursday but I'm annoyed that the "special guest" is John Frusciante.

On the east coast, Rother's special guest was Richard Pinhas. *grumble grumble*

Anyway, when the Knitting Factory first opened it was rather nice - sort of a pre-fab version of what a comfortable hipster club would be. Since then, the dry rot has set in - the furniture steadily removed and the lounge area converted into an ill-advised second stage. Now it's just another shitty run down club. It's a tremendous hassle to park there too.

Agreed I'd like to see Pinhas more but Frusciante is pretty damned cool.

Ha! - can we start the posts from registered posters only thing immediately please???

Make a formal request with the mod board. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:51 (twenty years ago) link

Ned, why are you winking???

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:53 (twenty years ago) link

I saw one of Frusciante's shows at the Knitting Factory, with Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass and the guy from Thelonious Monster on drums, and it was actually pretty awesome. You could do a lot worse!

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:56 (twenty years ago) link

Ned, why are you winking???

Because I have no idea how serious you are!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:56 (twenty years ago) link

Oh - not at all actually!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:58 (twenty years ago) link

nickn is that better than it sounds?

I don't know about the "...take the listener on a journey from the past to the future" part but I'm willing to listen without prejudice to see (plus it's free).

nickn (nickn), Friday, 30 July 2004 23:01 (twenty years ago) link

oh nice. carry on then.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 30 July 2004 23:53 (twenty years ago) link

A fellow ILM board member (read: me) has an EP release show Friday August 6th. It'd be great if any of you LA posters come check it out and say hi. There's some excellent "indie" music on the bill....we play Beatles/Ramones/Weezer/They Might Be Giants-style music.
