Oh yeah, but at this point "The Beatles" is just a set of phonemes that represent nothing in my mind other than four British dudes.

Yeah this. If you're going to come to the table three years late with a band that sounds a little too much like Dungen, do not also put the word "tame" in your name.

My least favourite band name - echobelly I mean, who ever thought that was a good one?

is it a Patti Smith reference? a semi quote from Kimberly?
It was dawn & the storm ECHOed in your BELLY? Think that's the line anyway

Stevolende, Friday, 18 March 2011 09:59 (thirteen years ago) link

The Beatles (doh! I guess it’s kind of easy to overlook among all the hyperbole and adulation, just what a thoroughly beguiling and quite frankly absurd/shit name it actually is. Imagine having a band called The Cockroaches turning up today and being proclaimed the greatest thing since sliced bread and saviours of popular culture as we know it. You just simply wouldn’t be able to take them seriously. Fancy naming themselves after such festering, squalid, useless f**ing vermin. Even if they are from Liverpool....)

It's actually a pretty good name for the time & a tribute to The Crickets the Buddy Holly band. I think it's a household word now so has a life of its own. Near sui generis associative link once you know who they are, or certainly for a few generations. In short, I think name pretty much = object so any possible shortcomings are outside the picture.
& I like the name anyway.

It might fall into the trap of band name is from an era before the band became themselves, as in not just a local band playing to local audiences and possibly wanted to rename after moving to next level.
Bit like Bark Psychosis (way too juvenile Goth/indie for the Che & later work, but were like 14 or 15 when they coined the name) or Live Skull (similar reason, bit too Goth/Indie for the band in later stages. Though they were a lot older than BP) & I'm sure there are others who pretty much outgrew the bandname but stuck with it cos that's what they were already known as or whatever.

I like The Beatles though.

Stevolende, Friday, 18 March 2011 10:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Did I imagine this or was there a bandin the early 90's called Fflaps??

no, singer went out with Fat Mark singer of Dandelion Adventure, later manager of Cornershop. Fflaps came from Wales, might be why they have 2 fs in the name.

Stevolende, Friday, 18 March 2011 11:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I think I went to school with Fat Mark.

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Sunday, 20 March 2011 16:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I kind of like the name The Electric Assholes (from The Onion list)

I think there's a band called PDF Format. Not only is it the most boring, insipid thing you could name your band after, it's redundant to boot. Whether they didn't realize that or they thought it was extra-clever, it still SUCKS.
