adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:09 (twenty years ago) link

He is also about to receive my microhouse mixes...eventually.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:10 (twenty years ago) link

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:15 (twenty years ago) link

Luomo is everything I love about music.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:20 (twenty years ago) link

does he have a giorgio moroder moustache? cos that's about 45% of what i love about music.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:21 (twenty years ago) link

definitely sounds like beat it.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:22 (twenty years ago) link

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:22 (twenty years ago) link

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:23 (twenty years ago) link

this must have been a michael jackson themed release.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:29 (twenty years ago) link

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:30 (twenty years ago) link

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 17 September 2004 03:37 (twenty years ago) link

Has anyone heard this domenico ferarri/luomo thing?

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 17 September 2004 04:08 (twenty years ago) link

AMATEURIST, YOU WILL GET THIS AND "ALPHABETICAL" NEXT TIME I SEE YOU!!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:44 (twenty years ago) link

I am happy that other people think "What Good" is the best track, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:46 (twenty years ago) link

"Talk in Danger" is my favorite - babbling subdued-hysterical desire.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 17 September 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago) link

"The Present Lover" could be my favorite Luomo's tune from TPL album, but all Luomo tunes are very astonishing. That moment of The Present Lover song, where rhythm is starting after vocal introduction, is probably one of the most moment where house music is making you start to dance immidiatly. Same feeling I have with "Market" opening track of Vocalcity album...but prologue is more longer. Or I should say I have this feeling every time when I listen Luomo.

btw:
Did anybody hear Domenico Ferrari vs. Luomo - "Kick" remixes ?

bojan (bojanm), Friday, 17 September 2004 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

the new luomo/raz ohara tracks "give it away" and "on a runaway" are awesome. luomo is just such a genius. he's the only one on the planet whom i can forgive the straight bass drumm.

imagine he put some more effort into drum programming!

xenografia, Friday, 17 September 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago) link

House music will NEVER DIE. Also, the 4/4 kick is absolutely intrinsic to Luomo's music.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:10 (twenty years ago) link

i go for "So You" as the finest thing on TPL.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:14 (twenty years ago) link

me heart luomo!

hector (hector), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:20 (twenty years ago) link

xenografia let's be friends

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 17 September 2004 18:24 (twenty years ago) link

house music is long dead, spencer, at least as a creative force, and vocalcity was at the same time its glourious summary and one of its pinnacles. 4/4 kick is not intrinsic to his music. on "the present lover" he's trying to do uk-garage. he doesn't quite succeed rhythmically, yet it's a good track. sparse breakbeats work well with his way of cutting together vocal samples. in fact what he does with vocals is not unlike uk-garage's "vocal science", except that where the latter takes its rhythms from dancehall/ragga, luomo looks back further in time, to dub.

xenografia, Friday, 17 September 2004 19:49 (twenty years ago) link

now i owe jaymc two serbian man-hugs

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Saturday, 18 September 2004 01:41 (twenty years ago) link

house music is long dead, spencer, at least as a creative force

The first time I heard this was in 1991. And then again in 1994. and again in... I remember when a clerk at Amoeba told me that they removed the house section because drum n bass was "where everything was headed". In fact, people have been declaring the death of the 4/4 kick since the mid-70s.

Also, Luomo's actual stab at garage-y syncopation happens on "Melt (AGF Dlay edit), and it's actually quite successful. However, it's not as successful as the slow burn 4/4 thump on the album - on 'Vocalcity' it's like he actually makes us believe that the heart beats at a constant 120 bpm. As for UK Garage's vocal science and how it "takes its rhythms from dancehall/ragga", well, half of UK Garage is 4/4 and the vocal science comes directly from American Garage House music - specifically the dubs. Todd Edwards turned it into a science and he only records in 4/4 (although I wish he'd mix it up a bit). I'd be cautious about the notion of 'progressing' 'beyond' 4/4. Also, please note that I love 2-Step, grime and breaks as much as anyone...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 18 September 2004 02:01 (twenty years ago) link

god spencer shut up house music is dead!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 18 September 2004 02:23 (twenty years ago) link

actually didn't we decide in that great house debate that it was the style of music least prone to major innovation (ie. breaking its own rules and becoming something else) but at the same time most accomodating to (natch) micro-innovation?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 18 September 2004 05:48 (twenty years ago) link

Which thread as that? Please don't tell me (or rather please tell me) the thread name was "The Great House Debate".

Jedmond (Jedmond), Saturday, 18 September 2004 06:11 (twenty years ago) link

as that = was that (obviously)

Jedmond (Jedmond), Saturday, 18 September 2004 06:13 (twenty years ago) link

looser thread!

suzisweeps, Saturday, 18 September 2004 06:45 (twenty years ago) link

"the vast majority of house music isn't very good"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 18 September 2004 07:34 (twenty years ago) link

Reading that thread again... ouch.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 18 September 2004 08:03 (twenty years ago) link

haha

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 18 September 2004 11:10 (twenty years ago) link

let's never fight again baby

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 18 September 2004 11:11 (twenty years ago) link

"the present lover" remains an album that i have a great deal of affection for but almost never get the urge to listen to.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 18 September 2004 11:18 (twenty years ago) link

i can still remember the anticipatory build-up to getting it tho.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 18 September 2004 11:18 (twenty years ago) link

Funny thing about that thread was that we were talking about the Jaxx and Luomo before their most recent albums were released. It's like BJ came down on your side and Luomo on mine. Ha ha maybe that's why I like the Luomo album so much - I'm probably not above that.
