this is my only post containing the word "usher" this year:

^wait, that isn't true (forgot to sort by date), but afaik it's my only post commenting on his 2010 output

recent Usher is so u_u

Do you still stand by this? The more I listen to it, the more think there's a great album to be constructed from Raymond Vs. Raymond if you cut out a little bit of the pap (and maybe the songs that make Usher sound like a total asshole, like "Lil Freak") and replace them with some of his recent non-album material featured on some of the recent Future of R&B mixes.

i love Lil Freak

janice (surm), Monday, 26 July 2010 20:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it's OK, but Glenn Lewis already used that Stevie Wonder sample to much better effect, and I think the song makes Usher sound like more a bad guy than he intends it to. On Confessions, he played the roll of the flawed by lovable cheat really well, but on Raymond Vs. Raymond he's not nearly as sympathetic. It's hard to take pity on him when he's barking sexual orders at easy conquests. Other songs depict him as a slave to his libido, but on this one he's totally in control, bullying a woman into a threesome she doesn't seem comfortable with. It just seems remarkably mean-spirited.

let's talk about the git fresh song instead

has anyone got round to listening to the k michelle mixtape yet?

Are you talking about What's the 901 or is there a new one? I've been enjoying What's the 901. I don't think anything tops "You Should've Killed Me," but every track that pairs her with a rap artist (Gucci, Missy, Three 6 Mafia) really works; she has the brassy presence to hold her own against all of them.

Anybody know if she has a real album on the way? Same goes with Miguel and Dondria; I keep reading about vague album release details for them, but can't find any concretes.

Been at work too often this week to play K. Michelle a lot - NSFW, duh. But giving it a second spin now and digging it very much.

I just posted that I hadn't heard his album.

But the singles have mostly been terrible. (Kinda f/w the Algernod joint tho.)

1. I don't think anything tops "You Should've Killed Me,"

i think "where they do that at" is probably the song that jumps out the most. love her cover/response to "nothin' on you", too, and as discussed on some other thread elsewhere, "hit em in the mouth" is totally wild.

lol the chorus of latest youtube posted itt contains "where they do that at" as a lyric

gold bullion logic (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 29 July 2010 17:21 (thirteen years ago) link

k michelle's wtdta is so great, i love the way she slides into the "where they do that at" after you would have expected there to be nothing left in the chorus.

gold bullion logic (samosa gibreel), Thursday, 29 July 2010 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah the whole thing just flows so naturally, reminds me of deemi's "soundtrack of my life" from a few years back. love the way she enunciates "video hoes", all those flashes of anger amidst the sadness.

kind of an odd choice for a lead single, but I'm glad she didn't go for "knock me down again" or "still turnin me on," this is classy and soulful but still modern, reminds me of Mary J. Blige's "Kitchen"...Keri's strongpoint is her midtempos anyway, "Where Did He Go," "Quicksand," "Slow Dance" etc.

my bad I meant to post this:

other new shit:

(This song is cool but I'm not sure about this more aggressive vocal from Lloyd, part of what makes him so great is his smooth, sweet, laid back voice)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IgguIzNQzM
(I need to listen to the Fantasia album... it's sounding kind of classic)

jazmine's new single is getting pretty big so it could be that, i'm not really into it, though

lol guys i'm probably gonna be interview Trey Songz next week -- gonna try to come up with the funniest questions possible without coming off mean or disrespectful

still think that trey songz mixtape brainwasher posted way back is dope. dont really get why hes so superhated

NOT FUNNY NEEDS MORE GUCCI (deej), Friday, 20 August 2010 14:38 (thirteen years ago) link

i wouldn't say he's superhated -- he's an object of a lot of jokez among mostly me and Rev and J0rdan, but i think most R&B fans like at least some of his songs

richie goingham (some dude), Friday, 20 August 2010 14:46 (thirteen years ago) link

xp to myself i have no idea why i was surprised it was tim, he's worked with keri before

k3vin k., Friday, 20 August 2010 14:52 (thirteen years ago) link

wasn't really keen on that lloyd track :(

i note that los has a production credit on the fantasia album! off to d/l.

if the mmts mixtape deej refers to is anticipation, that's the one that turned me round on him to an extent - i was shocked that it was good at all, let alone as good (and interesting) as it was

digging on fantasia and this cee-lo.

peacocks, Friday, 20 August 2010 18:15 (thirteen years ago) link

ftr, i do like some mmts songs, even did at the time i discovered how enjoyable a pasttime clowning on him is, but he is still a mans of alarming inconsequence

welcome back, ma$ed god (The Reverend), Saturday, 21 August 2010 04:03 (thirteen years ago) link

he is like the rick ross of r&b in terms of the "how the fuck did this guy become a star?" effect

welcome back, ma$ed god (The Reverend), Saturday, 21 August 2010 04:05 (thirteen years ago) link

that cee lo is great an it sounds like its from the past

plax (ico), Saturday, 21 August 2010 11:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't know about that, demographically speaking Trey seems kinda like the perfect midpoint between Usher and Chris Brown that his stardom seems somewhat inevitable. even when he was an also-ran for a couple years he was steadily on the rise, it's not like he was the 5th most famous guy on Slip N Side for almost a decade like Ross. (xpost)

richie goingham (some dude), Saturday, 21 August 2010 11:58 (thirteen years ago) link

dunno about that, feels like his first two albums both made zero splash and by the time of the third r&b had sunk low enough that he was the only guy of his ilk around. gucci and drake spots sealed the deal.

he does seem to be getting better with fame though tbf.

i've listened to "breaking point" like 10 times now, i think it's her best song

where are yall on this

k3vin k., Saturday, 21 August 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

"breaking point" is kind of... lurching, but i also think that it's pretty great

fantasia song is great too

ne-yo ain't bad, it's just really sappy in a way that i can't get past

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 21 August 2010 18:20 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah the song i was talking about is the new jazmine -- i like this a lot, much more than any singles off the last album aside from "need u bad"
