Jeez Whiney why is everybody trying to get you drunk

The Bartered Bride (Ówen P.), Friday, 30 July 2010 23:03 (thirteen years ago) link

So how many ILXors live in NYC and it's just gonna be me and Position Position?

I'm honestly questioning how many of you really "Love Music"

markers welby, S.B. (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Still waiting for the rest of the Jarmusch lineup to make me even more upset that I live all the way in Texas. I mean really, I'd trade you guys SXSW for ATP in a heartbeat.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:16 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, lets be real here. ilxor has made the trip from Texas and I know like tons of people on this site who live RIGHT HERE who claim to "Love Music" who have never gone to ATP. What gives?

markers welby, S.B. (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:18 (thirteen years ago) link

*cue Art Brut*

I've made the trip from Texas -- TWICE!

To be honest (and I think I've mentioned this somewhere in the thread above) the only reason I'm not booked for a third year of ATP NY is that married + kiddo + saving for house + etc. = can no longer spend $$ on cross-country music fests.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:23 (thirteen years ago) link

what kind of priorities are those

markers, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean, every day of this fest has been amazing. Where else can you watch a Boredoms 9-drum freakout, then walk 5 minutes down the hall and watch Oneida jam endlessly for 50 people in a small, living room-esque space, then decide, oh, I guess it's time to watch Caribou playing with Marshall Allen, Kieran Hebden, etc., followed by Boris performing Feedbacker in full, a bit more Oneida as a palate-cleanser, then drop in to see No Age playing Husker Du covers with Bob Mould himself on vox, and then oh why not go see the Flaming Lips and their exploding confetti balloons at the end of the day?

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Which is why I'm like perplexed as to why the 100-or-so NYC/NJ posters on this music nerd site can't be assed to go...

Like where's forks? nabisco? ian? unperson? surfboard dudes?

markers welby, S.B. (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:30 (thirteen years ago) link

like are they not even clicking this thread even?

markers welby, S.B. (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Hopefully they are busy starting a PayPal "charity fund" for ilxor to fly to Monticello.

"We are very pleased to announce the final additions to ATP NY.

This year Syd Butler of Les Savy Fav (new album Root for Ruin out now!) is curating the comedy stage and he has chosen the following comedians so far for Friday September 3rd.

Hannibal Buress
Heather Lawless

With more to be announced - these join the incredible Friday line up of Iggy and the Stooges playing Raw Power, Sleep performing Holy Mountain, Mudhoney performing Superfuzz Bigmuff and The Scientists performing Blood Red River.

Joining the already eclectic mix we have on Sunday September 5th curated by Jim Jarmusch we’re happy to announce:

GZA
Kurt Vile
T Model Ford
DJ Kool Herc
Ricky Powell Slideshow

We are also excited to have renowned artists Tim Biskup and Eric White hosting a joint exhibition on the festival site all weekend. All three days will also feature DJs and of course the wonderful cinema presented by Criterion.

Several of the vendors from Brooklyn Flea including Asia Dogs, Pizza Moto, Chonchos Taco’s and Crop to Cup coffee are also lined up to provide food in the food court. Bars and food vendors will continue until 4pm on Monday 6th September so that all guests can enjoy a more relaxing start to their post-ATP week!"

beyond psyched about Kool Herc

PLIES N THIGHS (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry, but these are some pretty *YAWN* additions to Jarmusch's final lineup. As much as I like GZA on record, he's put on the absolute worst live show I've seen all year. And Kurt Vile and Kool Herc should be alright, but...

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 13:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, weren't there like seven Friday performers last year? And this year there's four?

I'd really like to be able to hate on this year's fest (since I can't go ;_;) but I mean, can you *really* hate on a fest where THE HEADLINER IS BORIS AND SUNN O))) PERFORMING ALTAR?!?!!!?!?! Also I would fucking love to see Sleep headline day 1 for two hours... Jesus!

Yeah, getting sooooooooooooo excited for this. I naysayed the lineup but there is plenty of greatness to go around...stealth Thurston Moore solo set added early on Sunday last minute. Plus they're having a book club - so nerdy and great.

Hey Whiney, how's the fest? How was SLEEP?? (I'm catching their Austin show in a week or so, really excited.)

lieutenant jimmy john (kelpolaris), Sunday, 5 September 2010 23:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Sleep were immense, they played for over two hours. You're in for a treat in Austin, ilxor. Other highlights: Sonic Youth playing a set of only '80s material on Saturday night, T Model Ford doing at least two impromptu sets and being everywhere all the time (not bad going for a 90-something dude in a wheelchair), Beak> being a perfect early Saturday wake up call, Hope Sandoval telling us we all looked "quite tired" (are her and Colm from MBV an item? I'm assuming they are?), Wooden Shjips obliterating any need for a Spacemen 3 reunion, Papa M being one of the few acts to grasp that we don't need to be bludgeoned to death by volume all the time (and proving that Pajo is really wasting his talent on turds like Zwan and Interpol). I guess the Sunn/Boris thing was good but it's not really my thing. I snuck off to see GZA instead, who put a lot more effort into his set than Raekwon's very brief will-this-do main stage appearance. Oh, and Ron Jeremy was there.

There's loads of stuff I'm forgetting but I just got back to NYC and need sleep after dancing the night away to DJ Kool Herc's set.

Thanks for the detailed account! Very interesting!

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 13:45 (thirteen years ago) link

fine,

Highlights

1. Iggy & The Stooges - Straight up bonkers crowd, Mike Watt totally digging in, Scott Asheton swinging his grooves, and 60-something Iggy just climbing all over the crowd. Total fuckin madhouse. I was in the second row for about 45 minutes and was just soaked and ruined and dehydrated, my shirt completely unbuttoned. Wow.

2. Text Of Light - These guys just obliterated me. Strictly face-melting noise. Was such a good break-up to the more indie/psych stuff. People packed the room ("Hey! Lee Renaldo!") and then there was like 30 of us at the end. But it was so textured and intricate, i just got lost in their goo.

3. Fucked Up - I've seen these dudes before, but it was such a caffeinated jolt. Young kids spazzing out, PinkEye just commands a room.

4. The Breeders - A little nostalgic, totally fun

5. The Food! - Man between the outdoor BBQ ribs melting off the bone, the lateral-minded flavors of Steve's Ice Cream (Protip: lemon meringue with marshmallow), and of course the porkbelly Asiadogs, I was just in heaven all weekend. It's hard to believe just three years ago it was just fried bullshit and now it's like something worth making the trip for alone.

Other highlights: Ricky Powell's slideshow was a riot, T-Model Ford in the lobby was unreal, getting to see Five Easy Pieces and Underworld in the Criterion Cinema was great. Fuck Buttons had ridiculous bass, the book panel was chill

Other stuff I saw!: Beak>, Sleep, The Scientists, Mudhoney, Sian Alice Group, Hallogallo 2010, Shellac, the Breeders, Explosions In The Sky, Sonic Youth, Fursaxa, The Books, Thurston, the Greenhornes, Hope Sandoval, Girls, Raekwon, SunnO))) and Boris, White Hills, Wooden Shjips, Dungen...

and then a few hours with the mighty KOOL HERC

office (max) (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 13:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Sounds like I need to check out Text of Light, that's one of the only names on the bill I'm not familiar with. Very jealous of the Stooges set, that sounds IMMENSE. Would welcome details on Neu!/Hallogallo, Sonic Youth (all '80s setlist??), Sunn/Boris, Sleep... although I'm sure everything was great.

I'm seeing Sleep in three days in Austin (my small consolation for not being able to hit ATP this year).

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 13:52 (thirteen years ago) link

• Ricky Powell showed up 30 minutes late and then pretty much went for three hours. Also, he bum-rushed the stage during Raekwon's set and Masta Killa pushed him off.

• Fucked Up poured a giant bag of cereal on everyone and made the ballroom smell like chocolate

• SunnO))) and Boris was really beautiful, not as loud as i hoped, but fantastic.

• Kool Herc did this amaaaaaaaazing set of like rocksteady, into funk, into 80s/90s wedding-ready rap, into reggae and totally had the room packed. Then he closed with B.o.B, some song that sounded like "Blame It" but wasn't and Eminem's "White Trash Party" and totally cleared the room. Probably the only club on earth where that would happen!

I had organized a big pool party in the middle of Sonic Youth's set and everyone was psyched to go, then they played an all-80s setlist and people were so transfixed that i was the only one in the pool

office (max) (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 13:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Hallogallo was actually a little dull and marred by bad, bassy sound. Sucks cuz it was one of the things I was looking fwd too. But they played some of my fave Harmonia jams, which was great

office (max) (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 13:58 (thirteen years ago) link

not as loud as i hoped, but fantastic.

This is how I feel every time I've seen Boris since the first, in 2007. They were louder from *outside* the venue, waiting in line, back in 2007, than they are nowadays. But that's a small complaint and I'm sure my ears are thankful, even if my heart is not.

Hold up a sec, I mean, swimming is fucking awesome, but you skipped an all-'80s SY set for a dip in the pool???

i don't really like Sonic Youth all that much iirc. I saw about a 1/2 hour of their set and certainly enjoyed it.

Were Sleep as brain-rattlingly loud/heavy as advertised?

they went pretty big. neurosis drummer has kind of a light touch, but it was otherwise explosive

i mean, it was a delirious weekend. the whole ILX crew of "lolconcerts? I would rather be CUDDLING with my WIFE and a BOOK" is just missing the fuck out for real

The 10+ minutes of Text of Light was a bust - squalls of guitar feedback with wailing sax made for a fascinating few minutes, but grew tiresome quickly.

I think I'm right in saying that the most recent Sonic Youth album they plundered was Daydream Nation. Everything else was from before that. They sounded fantastic. An Evol or Sister tour would be great. Unlikely though. Disagree with Whiney on Fucked Up, I thought they were like a Wal Mart vision of pre-packaged punk rock rebellion, just completely lame and pointless. Sunn O))) and Boris seemed pretty loud from where I was standing, I shudder to think how loud they could have been at that 2007 show mentioned up there.

The Jim Jarmusch/Thurston Moore Q&A was a highlight. The story of how they met at a copy shop in the LES was fun - it was a place where everyone used to go to copy flyers and make fanzines in the pre Kinkos era. Moore worked there for a while until he got fired for making copies of his own 'zine on the sly.

Position Position, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

I went to the Sunn/Boris show in Brooklyn last night. Was absolutely fantastic despite 2/3 of the power blowing out. It killed the mood a little bit but after trying to fix the situation they came back and did a kick ass show without any fancy lighting. It was great. It was totally loud enough from where I was. Loved it. I'd see them anytime either band comes back to the city. Sunn is the shit.

your ears probably just adjusted. it's like mbv's "holocaust" section that at first deafens, but eventually one's brain starts to tune it out.
