Metal is what I witnessed last night. Not Ulver. Not even close.

Bill did you vote for a slayer album made in the last 19 years?
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:11 (fourteen years ago) link
My top Metallica album placed way low on this poll, but Master of Puppets at least has Orion - my #1 pick from the tracks poll - on it. I haven't listened to the record as a whole in years either, but I've had Damage Inc. floating around in and out of my head for a few days (amongst all this other metal!).
― r.i.p. soup (kkvgz), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:13 (fourteen years ago) link
I didn't, but that's because I didn't double up all that much. I would stan for the newest one and Christ Illusion, though. xp

Hair metal for johnny
Glad we got Platter of Crumpets (er... Master of Puppets) out of the way already. That fucking album. Ugh.

Metallica, GnR... let's go ahead and clear out all those despicable touchstones.
Megadeth, anyone?
Appetite pretty much transcends hair metal, dudes. It's among the ALL TIME greats in popular music in general.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 15:18 (fourteen years ago) link
eh, I guess
It's only got three really good songs on it and one's a cover

also willing to back the song "Master of Puppets" but other than that don't really care about that Metallica album either

Interesting, 6 #1 votes and not even in the top 20 for Funhouse. A piss poor showing for the greatest rock album of any sort, light, heavy, soft, hard or metal. Makes me wonder if there are people who voted in the poll who never heard it.
Also surprised to see Master Of Puppets fail to make the top 5. Maybe it was overplayed and votes split with Ride The Lightning.
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath was indeed voted the first modern metal album - What's the first modern metal album?
I disagree, but I do think it is an awesome album, not just because it was first. It certainly measures up close to Sabbath's three other best albums which will apparently be ruling the top 20.
― Fastnbulbous, Friday, 13 August 2010 15:29 (fourteen years ago) link

can someone do me a favor and list out which of the death/black metal guys are horrible racists and which ones aren't so I at least have some goalposts to go by as I investigate this stuff
― How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:32 (fourteen years ago) link
never rly HEARD any Darkthrone, but awesome
Johnny, if Kix showed up, I don't think people would be saying "OK FUCK YOU PEOPLE"

because for real, I don't care how talented you are, if you are saying shit about me and mine you need to never see any of my money ever and hopefully one day you will be killed

xp: yeah don't be so sure about that
Dan, just avoid Burzum, Drudkh and Enslaved and you should be ok

dan this is about Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Some pressings have the phrase 'Norsk Arisk Black Metal' (Norwegian Aryan Black Metal), but due to the negative response of many distributors around the world, that phrase was replaced by "True Norwegian Black Metal" in later pressings.
the reason I've never checked them out.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:35 (fourteen years ago) link
Yeah, my main complaint here was that we're in the top 20 now and earbreaking bullshit like this is being listed. I don't know their politics. Just that they sound like trash.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 15:35 (fourteen years ago) link
Drudkh arent racists apparently
didnt know enslaved were. "smithy" is a big fan of them (and darkthrone too i think)
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:36 (fourteen years ago) link
I love that this poll is so fucked that we have to determine which bands are racists and which aren't.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 15:36 (fourteen years ago) link
so just avoid listening to LJ and ask someone who knows what they're talking about.
Avoid Graveland obviously, they are genuine NSBM.

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:38 (fourteen years ago) link
Metallica's music is so bad that they may as well be lumped in w/ the racists imho.
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:38 (fourteen years ago) link
not sure why anyone should be surprised that the most highly regarded black metal and death metal albums are showing up near the top of a hardrock/metal poll
― ciderpress, Friday, 13 August 2010 15:38 (fourteen years ago) link
He's probably a little of both, or was at one point, but that was never a proud selling point of GNR. xps
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 August 2010 15:39 (fourteen years ago) link
BTW, Master Of Puppets was released March 3, 1986. The last day of recording was December 27, so no chance it was released in 1985.
― Fastnbulbous, Friday, 13 August 2010 15:39 (fourteen years ago) link
btw Axl is why I'll never own a Guns 'N Roses album
also even though I love the albums I have by them, I've never bought a Jane's Addiction album after learning about the existence of "Whores" (never bought the first one, lol) so my inconsistency has a little bit of consistency
― How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:40 (fourteen years ago) link
ok I read somewhere that Drudkh and Enslaved might be dodgy but this is looking RONG upon inspection
― AVANT-ELECTRO METAL IST KRIIIIIIIEEEEGGGGGGGGGGGG (acoleuthic), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:41 (fourteen years ago) link
but yeah Burzum and Darkthrone you'll be wanting to avoid, Dan
i had to google the lyrics for that JA song, been a while since i heard that album. Some good stuff on it but yeah, that song.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link
I think darkthrone have denied being racists/nazis too fwiw
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:43 (fourteen years ago) link
fwiw this is why I don't really pay attention to metal, even though apparently half of my musical predilections fall into that category
― How could you forget the crazy hooker? (HI DERE), Friday, 13 August 2010 15:43 (fourteen years ago) link
I did not pay a cent for my copy of Transylvanian Hunger and I have no idea what they're saying.

really not that many 'good' metal bands are racist - the ones that are receive lots of attention
