i'm not even that huge of a "single ladies" fan but post-blackout britney spears is seriously some of the most cynical and worthless pop of the past few years

single ladies is brilliant if you like being hit over the head with a huge cartoon hammer

the repetition in womanizer is the best part, along with the buzz-heavy synths. as i've always said, womanizer burns like a stick of dynamite. yes, i've always said that.
repetition is often repped for in other contexts.
― janice (surm), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 18:39 (thirteen years ago) link
just admiring the juxtoposition there
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 18:40 (thirteen years ago) link
I don't get a 'hammer to the head' from Single Ladies at all - it has a well-defined verse, and yea the chorus repeats a bit at the end, but no more than any other pop tune. Womanizer (even though I like it to a degree) is monotonous from the jump, and far more guilty of a sledgehammer to the forehead affect. Even the verse blurs into the rest of the song.

the falloff after blackout for britney is pretty shocking.
― plax (ico), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 18:42 (thirteen years ago) link
well, i think "single ladies" has an explicit "hammer over the head" moment, and it's that bleepy sound effect in the beat, which i happen to think is awesome
but i understand what ramzi is saying, also i think his defense of "womanizer" is a good one
― be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 18:43 (thirteen years ago) link
yes, i see that rev :) but i wasn't talking about the lyrics -- i think the single ladies beat and production are what make it so belligerently bouncy.
― janice (surm), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 18:43 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah, thank you jordan, that's what i meant.
"single ladies" is more like, idk, getting hit in the head by a hen party.
"womanizer" isn't terrible but don't think i'd notice if it had suddenly never existed, two years on. there was some ok stuff on circus though, as cynical and rote as it was - "amnesia", "kill the lights", um.

getting hit in the head by a hen fap

it consists of one hastily-released rush job put together to take advantage of her medication working! i don't think any given britney album indicates a "direction" per se.
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link
"amnesia" is really good though, it sounds like a pre-blackout demo they found lying around

it's also not that bad a falloff. plax, you were particularly ready to be let down by that album, i think. circus had a few major clunker moments, but it also boasted some awesome trax.

i don't even consider myself a britney fan but i can see the drop off clear as day. i don't think level of investment has anything to do with it.
also, "single ladies" production is a monster of funk
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 18:50 (thirteen years ago) link
Gays, they're both really really good.

still love that deep dark synth in the single ladies bridge tho
― janice (surm), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 18:56 (thirteen years ago) link
actually it's in the chorus i think
― janice (surm), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link
Love everything about both these songs. The only respect in which "Single Ladies" clearly wins over "Womanizer" is the video.

The video for 'Womanizer' is simultaneously WTF o_O and so Britney at the same time.

i basically have never come to terms w/ britney as a concept (even if i like a couple of her songs) so take my opinions on her with a grain of salt
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 19:08 (thirteen years ago) link
Radar was probably the best song on circus.
actually, Unusual You was BRILLIANT.
― prolego, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 19:13 (thirteen years ago) link
well "radar" was also the best song on blackout
― be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link
they completely botched it up when they remixed it for circus imo
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah I can't really grasp what "so Britney" means.
― hongthrone: norsk arisk synth pop (crüt), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 19:17 (thirteen years ago) link
it's pretty Britney to appear naked in a comeback #1 music video
― janice (surm), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 19:19 (thirteen years ago) link
what did they do to it? i thought radar had just leaked in a shittier quality on circus or something.
and nah, that would be "get naked". plus the zoophilia in the "radar" video was kind of a turnoff.
xp.
― prolego, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link
can't remember exactly but it just sounded thicker, less crisp, as i remember. the vocal more buried. it was because they were contractually obliged to the songwriter to release it as a single, but britney was too busy being sectioned &c for that to be an option during the blackout cycle, so they shoved it on circus and hoped no one would notice/care

i know this is fair, but blackout was such an album, and despite its at times incoherence, it still felt like a pretty definite document of something. even if that something was basically this
http://www.soundoffcolumn.com/images/britney_lindsay_paris.jpg
circus just feels kindof personality-less, it has some yeah fully functioning tracks. i have a particular soft spot for leather and lace but still.

britney looks totally bemused lol.
whenever i listen to blackout i'm just basically just picturing this:
