Hard to tell, anyone else have an opinion on this?

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:40 (thirteen years ago) link

It's pop metal so i don't see why not. A few pop metal fans complained that it wasn't in the big metal poll. I'm pretty damn sure it would make the strip club rule and um Kirk had an earring and wore make up during the Load period.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:43 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, I'm just gonna go for it

Metallica - Enter Sandman
Metallica - Unforgiven
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters

I love "Sad But True" and "Wherever I May Roam" and some deep cuts too but maybe those are a little too true metal? I dunno.

richie goingham (some dude), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:48 (thirteen years ago) link

How about Faith No More - Epic?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i think it should be here, totally. was hoping it'd be in the other poll but the less pop "Midlife Crisis" got the spot instead.

richie goingham (some dude), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:50 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe our rule of thumb for gray area stuff is if it was a hit AND wasn't in the other poll.

richie goingham (some dude), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:50 (thirteen years ago) link

xxp: Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I mean, Henry Kvlt Pvp would disagree, but...

Faith No More? Do we open the funk-metal floodgates? Funk-metal as long as it's pop-metal, I guess.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:51 (thirteen years ago) link

So like, "Been Caught Stealing" if you like, but not something of the first Mr. Bungle album.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Billy Squier - The Stroke
Billy Squier - My Kinda Lover
Billy Squier - Emotions In Motion
Starz - Detroit Girls
Starz - Cherry Baby
Rex Smith - Do Me
Rex Smith - Ten Seconds Of Love
Rex Smith - Call Her "Easy"
Teaze - Hot To Trot
Teaze - Red Hot Ready
Ted Nugent - Wango Tango

Who's gonna host the pole dancing competition? I hear they're all the rage.

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 21 August 2010 12:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah, funk-pop-metal. Was just looking at "Cherry Pie" on the list and thinking how White Trash - "Apple Pie" is my favourite crassly jerkish comparison of possibly-underage girl to baked fruit+pastry product by a band beginning with W in that brief pre-Nevermind stretch of the 90s

(ok, I was reminded of it because I always have to stop and think for a minute to remember which is which. this post is not a nomination, I guess, just a musing)

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:08 (thirteen years ago) link

LOL - White Trash.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:09 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah been caught stealing totally belongs. They were glam. As with the manics and redd kross, you can be glam & alt rock at the same time, but glam fans still liked them. Janes were the alt rock band glam fans, who generally hated alt rock, liked.

How about Enuff Z Nuff?
Im guessing Jellyfish is a no? (i never liked them but knew loads who did)
AOR bands I assume can qualify? I knew people who inexplicably liked Crown Of Thorns (google the singers hair!!)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Sad for GLJ but that was probably a fair call. Maybe not sufficiently glam but...

Survivor - Eye of the Tiger
Rainbow - I Surrender

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Saturday, 21 August 2010 13:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Rainbow - Since You've Been Gone

If nothing else, "Jealous" certainly belongs in this poll. That track was LA glam all the way.

Nominations for Thin Lizzy, White Zombie, and (for fuck's sake) the Manic Street Preachers almost makes me not want to participate in this thread. Clearly, some of you were jamming Mr. Mister when Bon Jovi ruled the airwaves.

Also, no mention of Trixter? Skid Row fer chrissakes?

Trixter - Give It To Me Good
Skid Row - Youth Gone Wild
Skid Row - I Remember You
Winger - Miles Away

Might as well complete the GNR singles...

Guns N' Roses - November Rain
Guns N' Roses - Estranged
Guns N' Roses - Don't Cry
Guns N' Roses - You Could Be Mine

sofatruck, Saturday, 21 August 2010 15:43 (thirteen years ago) link

xp: if you don't think Thin Lizzy belongs here, I just don't know.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Saturday, 21 August 2010 20:11 (thirteen years ago) link

it's funny how just 1 or 2 bands can make people froth at the mouth at a poll with hundreds of others in it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 21 August 2010 22:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Trixter were so precious with their dirtbikes and barbecues.

Quiet Riot - Love's a Bitch
Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the Moon

Nate Carson, Sunday, 22 August 2010 11:15 (thirteen years ago) link

See, the thing is, I prefer Thin Lizzy to pretty much every other band on this thread. What I'm saying is it's totally revisionist to put them on any list that also includes Cinderella and Ratt. If the shit wasn't on Dial MTV, wasn't from LA, and wasn't played at every redneck senior prom from 82-90, it probably doesn't belong here.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 22 August 2010 15:19 (thirteen years ago) link

For proto hair-metal purposes ...

UFO - Doctor Doctor
UFO - Only You Can Rock Me
UFO - Lonely Heart

Also some pre-Slippery JBJ
Bon Jovi - Runaway

ithappens, Sunday, 22 August 2010 16:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I guess I'm against the 'proto' thing here. Doesn't make a lot of sense. You could argue that Sabbath was an influence on these guys, but so was fuckin' Springsteen and Southside Johnny. Where does it end?

Anyway, has anyone nominated "Don't Close Your Eyes" by Kix?

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Sunday, 22 August 2010 16:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I take your point, and had originally thought of limiting the requirements to "Dial MTV, LA, etc" like you suggest, but if you exclude "proto hair-metal", do you exclude KISS, AC/DC, etc.? Those were some of the groups who weren't getting enough attention in the other poll because they didn't fit the mass definition of metal. I mean, the "If only more strippers voted" joke was in response to You Shook Me All Night Long not making it.

Now, I know there are problems because not every Thin Lizzy song could be called hair metal. Perhaps I'm a little prejudiced because my introduction to Thin Lizzy was through Bon Jovi's cover on "Stairway to Heaven, Highway to Hell." Anyone else have any thoughts?

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Sunday, 22 August 2010 17:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I learned about Thin Lizzy in the first place by reading mags like Circus and Hit Parader in the '80s, when hair metal bands would talk about them with reverence. They don't fall in the Sunset Strip category for sure, but thankfully it's a HARD ROCK and Hair Metal poll.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 August 2010 17:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I think that stripper compatibility is the deal-breaker here. Could you imagine a stripper gyrating to, say, Immigrant Song? Just about. Stairway To heaven? No. So, one counts and the other doesn't (ballads are I different matter I admit). There were plenty of bands on the previous poll who had a few songs that fitted the remit even if they weren't generally metal / hard rock bands, so the same can apply here in my opinion. Also, this :

By performers wearing makeup/hairspray/spandex/leather/gypsy scarves and jewelry

which excludes CCR, Springsteen etc but allows for Thin Lizzy, AC/DC (just) and the rest.

Also, Phil Mogg's nephew was in The Quireboys so UFO are in just on that.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Phil Mogg was happy to wear a white jacket with spandex trousers. That's surely a hair metal combo.
UFO were hair metal before it was defined - much more than Lizzy, because they had none of the taste for epicry that Lynott had.

And it pains me to nominate celtic frost in this, but they did go full on hair metal, so wtf not.

It wont get any from Celtic Frost fans. Any votes it gets will be for the lols.

1st heard it in like 1992, saw it on Raw Power. It put me off checking their older records for a couple of years. By good luck i knew someone who had them and recorded them for me .

Dudes, there is probably no fucking way I can do this poll. I got a lot of shit going down both at work and at home - I just won't have time in the near future to keep bumping this thread and getting people's emails and tabulating results and shit. If someone else wants to take over, that's cool. If not, we at least have a pretty decent list of awesome songs. Sorry, y'all.
