I still think of this song fondly because as a kid I loved Silver Spoons. If you loved that show, you know what i'm talking about.

for whatever reason I d/led this album off of iTunes along with Steve Winwood's Back in the High LIfe again. guess which one gets played more.

Ha ha, I love a number of Steve Winwood's songs. Granted, I haven't listened to them in 20 years or so, but come on, who doesn't love "Valerie"?

Regarding Mr. Mister, when I was in kindergarten, back in '85, my cousin gave me a handful of records - one of them being Mr. Mister. Gotta say, I loved that record at the time.

yea Stevie was a wise purchase. dunno why i wanted the non-singles tracks of Mr. Mister. they really aren't memorable.

i kinda liked back in the high life way back when. the later more explicitly blooz-beer commercial music that winwood came out w/ after that record takes a bit of a shine of his other (better) 80s work, though.

Re: Mr. Mister, I always used to pretend that "Kyrie Eleison" was "carry a laser", and imagined them carting around a laser gun and blowing shit up. So that's a point in their favor for me I guess.

"Broken Wings" is pretty gross.

I'll say this much about this nothing act. Not only did the drummer go on to be a longstanding member of King Crimson, but I guess the singer has had a long, storied career as a hitmaker, co-writing (with former bandmate Patrick Leonard) "I'll Remember" for Madonna, among other things. Had no idea.

Thanks for the piece either way, because now I know it was Mr. Mister who did "Is It Love," a song I've had somewhere in my head since it was used in the end credits to "Stakeout."

They were a great band when I was 7 or 8 and didn’t know about The Police yet.

Crap song, crap band. At the very least, no one seems to listen to them anymore; I'm guessing the only time they've entered the public consciousness since the 1980s is with that stupid Train song.

Kyrie and Broken Wings still come on the systems in the oddest of places, in addition to CVS et al.

I can't remember how Kyrie goes without mentally hearing it segue into Breakout by Swing Out Sister due to a 20 year old tv ad for a 'hits of the 80s' compilation that featured brief clips of both songs next to each other (Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel - BREAKOUT!)

I thought "Broken Wings" was used to great effect two times in the film "MacGruber", still waiting on someone to explain to me why the drummer for Mr. Mister is the longest serving drummer for King Crimson

Why not Pat Mastelotto? He's a great drummer with an open mind, which is why you can find him on Mr. Mister records and XTC records, or The Rembrandts and King Crimson.

My middle school music teacher used "Broken Wings" to teach us about composition. We had to listen to it multiple times and map out the structure of the song and everything. It seemed insane to me even at the time, he had Coltrane and Beatles posters in his classroom but somehow thought "Broken Wings" was some perfect songwriting template. It's teachable, I guess.

That's funny, 'cuz the chorus lyric was near enough lifted from 'Blackbird' ...

Haha, if you are talking about a UK TV ad there is at least a 70% chance I made that edit.

I actually remember the same TV ad! It used to air a lot on VH-1 circa 1996-1997.

This thread made me cry laughing.

Reason for revive: up until this year, this holiday season, I'd never heard "Kyrie." Now, I hear it whenever I go into almost any retail outlet, which isn't too often given the pandemic. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this just the weird mid-Atlantic pocket of the east coast US where this is happening?

I was just looking for this band's name after hearing the new War On Drugs tracks/rough mixes they shared on an instagram stream and thinking "broken wings"
