Robert, do you shop at hot topic?

Lil' Fancy Pants (ex machina), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

Is Hot Topic emo?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:35 (twenty years ago) link

It's whatever they want to sell to you.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:36 (twenty years ago) link

If it sold whatever I'd want to buy from them then I'd check it out.

As it is I managed to never enter the store once in my adolescence though I am aware of why some (indie kids?) are so derisive of it.

Well i have been i hot topic once. but i didnt buy anything. being in there scares me because some kids are a little freaky. they look like a huge mass a black hair and make up. i dont dress that way.

Robert Willcutt, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago) link

i dont think there is an "emo" store it is just what they sell, most stores sell a variety.

Robert Willcutt, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:34 (twenty years ago) link

Robert, how old are you?

Lil' Fancy Pants (ex machina), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago) link

i m 13

Robert Willcutt, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:01 (twenty years ago) link

SO SHUT THE FUCK UP

Lil' Fancy Kpants (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, don't listen to him. Continue on, I enjoy your insights.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:51 (twenty years ago) link

There is no emo store. And if there were no emo would go there. The true emo stores are salvation army and thrift stores. Hot Topic are for punks. Its alrigh but not for emos. And yeah Robert, this is your first year in JR HIGH. You know more then the usual 7th grader, but you dont know much. You dont even know why you hate emo. The best answer ive got from you was "its just stupid." So enjoy what you enjoy, but dont slam emo when you only know the basics of it.

Dillon, Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:07 (twenty years ago) link

and by the way chrishamrin, please, please, please tell me you were joking on your top 5/3 list.

Dan Selzer, how are you old?

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 8 April 2004 18:07 (twenty years ago) link

I just turned 29! If you want to send me a birthday gift, you can via my amazon wish list.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 8 April 2004 18:12 (twenty years ago) link

Dan Selzer, happy birthday, I would buy you a gift, but I am poor. Instead I will buy many of your fine CD offerings at a later date when I am no longer poor. Also, completely off topic, but do you send stuff out to college radio? (I think so) I tried to email someone about this once, but the email didn't work. (I want to spread the love of music!)

and by the way chrishamrin, please, please, please tell me you were joking on your top 5/3 list.

I am no longer capable of humor since the accident...

There is no emo store. And if there were no emo would go there.

Wish I did, but I don't really undersand you kids these days and your music which all sounds like noise to me and your strange ways of dressing and patterns of speech. Do kids really call people, "emos"? I mean, I really hope so.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Thursday, 8 April 2004 18:36 (twenty years ago) link

yes, we do college radio mailings, I let my partner Todd handle such things. send me your details (what college, are you the MD? who is the MD, etc) and I'll forward it to Todd.

btw, my older sister was a Wire fan, so when they had their mid to late 80s media blitz, I remember it well, I remember her taping an episode of a talk show hosted or guest-hosted by Suzanne Summers! Seeing her smile and say "and now, Wire!" was just great. This clip is also on the Wire 154 bootleg DVD.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago) link

Emo, punk, indie, rock, country, what ever it's all good to someone out there...I dont know why people get so carried away about something stupid like this. Anyways, nice to see a few good bands being listed on here.

That Girl You Dont Know, Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:30 (twenty years ago) link

alright i think we are getting off subject.mainly at least, this is about emo. Dillon is 15 so stop asking ages please. (he sits next to me in class) thats how i know. i was looking at a site and it said that emo was punk played louder faster and with emotional lyrics. what a load of crap the emotional part is right though. emo will never be as fast or loud as punk.

Robert, have you ever heard MOHINDER?

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Monday, 12 April 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago) link

No, who are they enlighten me.

Robert Willcutt, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:03 (twenty years ago) link

Dillon you have some bad taste in music. i dont understand why people like "emo". its just bad punk rock.(emo will never be better than punk) so get over it Dillon you will never get any where in the world with that music. who wants to hire a emo kid to work at a store thing. our school wouldnt even hire you. to get any where in the world you going to have to listen to something better, like punk or heavy metal. and ever notice there is like no emo girls. man youll never get a date. trust me.

Robert Willcutt, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:49 (twenty years ago) link

i was looking at a site and it said that emo was punk played louder faster and with emotional lyrics. what a load of crap the emotional part is right though. emo will never be as fast or loud as punk.

That was from Roberts post. Listen, playing music louder and faster isnt a contest. It just is. What you dont realize is that most emo isnt even close to the sappy acoustic guitars that mtv tells the world emo is. If you call Rites of Spring or Fugazi or even as modern as Dead Poetic sappy and slow, theyd slit their wrists. If you go to their concert, they are just everywhere. Screaming into the mics, destroying their own equipment, just everywhere. Have you ever heard of Warped Tour? They just thrash out their vocal chords to the point you cant understand what they say. Obviously punk does the same, but emo is a sub-genre of punk. Whether you want to admit it or not.

Dillon, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:54 (twenty years ago) link

emo is not a sub genre of punk. it is in a league of its own like marilyn mansen.

Robert Willcutt, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 16:57 (twenty years ago) link

these bands consisted mostly of people who played in hardcore punk bands, got burned out its limited forms, and moved to a guitar-oriented, midtempo rock-based sound with emotional punk vocals
-fourfa.com

"As for emo today, as most other sub-genres, it has spawned many(sometimes extremely opposite and/or contradicting) hybrids that all stake claim to the label, rendering it somewhat useless. Here are some examples: there's political, scream-and-flail-on-the-floor, emo like Frail, Swing Kids, Impetus Inter, and a slew of San Diego based bands; there's the really slow, discordant, artsy emo like Cap'n Jazz, Joan d'Arc, Evergreen, etc.; then we have the more popular melody/pop-oriented bands like Texas is the Reason, Sensefield, Mineral, Promise Ring, Split Lip (now Chamberlain), etc.; and last but not least we have the slow, stop-and-go, melody-thrash alternating groups like Amber Inn, Still Life, and others I can't think of right now."

The short and simple answer is that Emo is Hardcore Punk music with sensitive and emotional lyrics.

Have I proved myself yet?

Dillon, Tuesday, 13 April 2004 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

No you have not proven yourself. this is just trash. emo is just emotional, stupid, and they are posers.

Wouldn't anyone purporting to be a punk after like... say 1982... be a poseur?

Here are links to classic "emo" bands that melt the faces of 95% of "punk" out there:

Indie is just a place for fat kids who want ot be emo to fit in, and they hat all the emos becasue they are smaller.... Anyway, punk is not dead and it will never die becasue Punk is more than just a type of music, it's an state of mind , and a way of life .... But there are millions of true punk bands still out there, they are just underground, so no ... Like Nazi Punks ..... if there music died do you think there would be no more nazi skinheads/ punks ? I am not sure if that is what you like trying to say (that punk is dead, becasue the music is dead ::which it's not::) but whatever .

And just to point out somtihng there are some great emo bands out there, like Alkaline Trio, which many be the only good emo band, but there are atleast three good emo bands out of the millions

All the emo band that were good created they own type of music ((screamo)) becasue they did not want to be called a emo band .... becasue well must of it is just a way for boys who like rock to make a pop band that they want to pass as rock band

SO those emo bands that sound like hardcore bands are called screamo bands ..... they would never want to be called emo bands, what person with a working mind want to be a emo band ?

I salute you Kenny the punk. you do know alot and those were some kick ass bands. My favorites were The Unseen, The Virus, and Anti-Flag. Though I dont think The Alkaline Trio are emo. I thought they were more light punk kind of music. but that is fine. you know way more than Dillon or any other person here.

Robert Willcutt, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago) link

Kenny, after reading your lists of current and classic punk bands and deliberating on said list I have decided that you truly deserve your moniker of 'the punk'. I only wish I wasn't such an emo pussy so that I had the balls to listen to great, true punk bands like NOFX and The Distillers instead of the watered down punk I listen to which all too often has the 'post-' prefix attached. Which is so cliche. I mean, fuck cliches, I should be punk rock.

Unfortunately, I have to go listen to the Out Hud/!!! split as per my duties. Not looking forward to it.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 18:01 (twenty years ago) link

Haha, funny i guess it would suck being emo

Robert Willcutt, Thursday, 15 April 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago) link

we should make our own thread. this one was about indie kids and emo kids. we are talking about punk and emo.

Robert Willcutt, Thursday, 15 April 2004 16:58 (twenty years ago) link

Did you listen to any of those bands, you pop punk douchebag?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 15 April 2004 20:13 (twenty years ago) link

what the hell is eno? is it emo or something?

Robert Willcutt, Friday, 16 April 2004 16:45 (twenty years ago) link

Lets take a vote, If you think that emo sucks post #1 if not post #2. I'm bored so lets all name our favorite bands, I'll start The Unseen.

Robert Willcutt, Friday, 16 April 2004 16:58 (twenty years ago) link

Eno is Brian Eno. He helped make music better during the 70s and early 80s, mostly, invented a few genres and pretty much influenced everyone, for better and for worse.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 16 April 2004 18:58 (twenty years ago) link

I was just listening to Music For Airports last night.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 16 April 2004 19:01 (twenty years ago) link

and he saw punk and the future of music, as he wrote in 1974...

"we saw the Lovers, the Modern Lovers, and they looked very good, they looked as if they could..."

Could what? Save rock and roll!
