incredible imo

ok right now i'm convinced this is the best song he's done

'already taken' is great but is kind of 'break up' (mario, garrett + mane) part 2 in that it makes me feel a bit ill
― i feed these skreets (tpp), Friday, 10 September 2010 13:50 (thirteen years ago) link
Yuuup!
― Evan R, Friday, 10 September 2010 15:04 (thirteen years ago) link
odd comparison, warm Polow keybs don't remind me of seasick Bangladesh beats at all
― some dude, Friday, 10 September 2010 15:09 (thirteen years ago) link
it sounds v. slightly out of tune to me (like break up)

"when a woman loves" is kind of O_O

sometimes i forget that kells is like... a deity of singing
― dayo reckoning (The Reverend), Saturday, 11 September 2010 14:01 (thirteen years ago) link
i've had to listen to it at least 4 times in a row now

yeah man

Just catching up one some old stuff from this thread and hit play on Alicia Keys "Love Is Blind". Scrolled down, totally zoned out for a bit, and completely forgot who I was listening to. Loving it, trying to think who the heck I'd consciously decided to listen to less than a minute ago, and didn't realise/remember it was Alicia Keys until I scrolled back up and checked. So basically this is great because it sounds nothing like her.

random question: did anyone listen to the sean garrett mixtape & did it have any worthwhile jamz
― *sets trend* (deej), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:22 (thirteen years ago) link
it has a weird ass cover

'she geeked' was good but just for the gucci verse
i could not take a mixtape's worth of sean garrett's voice.

i can barely take a chorus's worth of it on a song i really like tbh

songz album is sounding kind of boring/bland
maybe i'm just not in the mood 4 it rite now
― one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 05:56 (thirteen years ago) link
i have yet to listen to the songz except for the middle part which i really liked -- skipped around a bit & it seemed boring -- his last album was like... a 6.5 or 7/10 which i think is prob his peak
― banaka socka flame (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 05:59 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah i'd agree anticipation/ready is most likely his peak
after one listen I'm really feeling the PLEASURE portion of this ("red lipstick," "unusual" and "doorbell"), the rest is quite generic/boring besides a few songs ("can't be friends," "made to be together"), and his r. kelly impersonation is kind of obnoxious on some of these tracks
― one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 06:27 (thirteen years ago) link
Did mmts become super successful just by cutting his braids off? That's the theory I'm gonna run with
― banaka socka flame (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link
Fennessey compares mmts to judy garland in his wapo review, LOL :)
― one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link
The characterization of his last album was a bit generous... "I invented sex" isn't exactly a zany song by any means
― banaka socka flame (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 17:51 (thirteen years ago) link
so i've found this whole john legend/roots project really *eyeroll*-worthy, but I'm loving this remix:

"I Invented Sex" is a pretty fuckin' goofy song, man
― some dude, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link
idk i've always seen trey songz & trey songz songz as incredibly generic, some just happen to be really good
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 16:03 (thirteen years ago) link
the goofiest part about him is prob his ad lib
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link
and his goofy-sounding vibrato
― one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 16:08 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah he totally sounds like a cartoon character
― some dude, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 16:17 (thirteen years ago) link
i mean let's not forget his first top 40 appearance was making disturbingly accurate female sex noises on a Twista song
― some dude, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 16:21 (thirteen years ago) link
trey is pretty goofy to me; the little headpop "UP!" chirp he does in the video for bottoms up is hysterical and makes me think of him as the songzbird
― Gulab jamun (Gulab Jamun) into the syrup please. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link
he comes across to me, when he's not being boring, as a boring person who's making a real effort to be goofy, but he just has an odd idea of goofiness and hence ends up being actually quite weird
― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link
i don't think much of that comes thru in his music at all
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:22 (thirteen years ago) link
like i don't think 'ready' is endearingly goofy or charming or anything... i think he succeeds in being exceedingly good at generic 2000s r&b even tho a lot of his songs just end up as non-entities -- the first trey song i really loved was "can't help but wait" which i thought was a ne-yo song for like two months -- also he's actually attractive
"i invented sex" & "neighbors know my name" are more successful for being great slogans & sonically pleasing than because trey's goofy personality shines through
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:27 (thirteen years ago) link
sidenote: you don't like "wonderwoman" or "gotta make it" ? :(
― one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:29 (thirteen years ago) link
agree btw I don't think his music is weird or goofy at all, but I guess my barometer for goofiness in r&b (r. kelly, oran juice jones, etc.) is kind of high lol i mean "neighbors know my name" is kind of silly/goofy conceptually (plus the "KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!s" are hilarious) but for the most part he's more on the generic side than anything else
― one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:31 (thirteen years ago) link
my forever favorite songz song is "i need a girl" cuz i think it sounds like something from 'confessions'
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:33 (thirteen years ago) link
really? always thought that song was generic stargate rehash
― one hood ass geometry teacher (The Brainwasher), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:35 (thirteen years ago) link
it could also be that & still be great
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:40 (thirteen years ago) link
xps yeah not sure i really accept the use of hyuk-hyuk goofy, or rather in the sense of him trying to be, wrt songz - his is a ridiculous whirl of affectations sincerely done in the name of modern swag i feel. or yeah, cartoonish, in terms of caricature strictly, cos he is a blank slate still fundamentally .
to this end though i'm finding passion, pain & pleasure uniquely victim to its guest-spot allegiances; 'bottoms up', and its nicki verse, casts songz and his songz in this hugely entertaining and often hilarious rococo theatrical spotlight, with its genteel loverman's picnic fidelity and rarefied moonscapes coming like a weirdly chintzy tongue-in-cheek harps in the bathroom/perfumed loo-roll vibe ("making luuuuv faces", the janelle-monae-eat-yr-heart-out 'pain' interlude!) (and strangely enough though the kells debt is undeniable, i feel i hear more of a pre-kells new jack swing playfulness in there?) - but then 'unusual' is a horrible misstep that retrospectively mires the album in all of (the featuring) drake & boi-1da's weaselly 2nd-bland desperate pointlessness, nearly spoiling it completely were it not for the awesome 'doorbell' pulling clear right after. ("this bedroom is my colosseum"! - either you love the silly grandeur or you don't.)
i predict i will be sick of this album in a week. but in a general sense the question i think it asks of you is, would you rather reward an idiot genuinely doing his best, doing something at least, or would you prefer to hand a limp gas-station bouquet to the more artistically talented guy half-assing it, like the-dream? songz has endeared himself to me.
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:55 (thirteen years ago) link
i think the album is good! i gravitate towards pragmatism -- trey is our r&b star, i accept him
not that this album is anywhere near any dream album but okay
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:58 (thirteen years ago) link
'ready' has great singles but i think this album is actually better
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link
also - and this will probably be of still even less interest to anyone here - the guy songz most reminds me of right now is aidonia the dancehall dude, who i always felt was a similarly annoying vybz&busy-biting tabula rasta before he finally recently came into his own quirky lane as others faded while he maintained
xp yeah i see this one as a perfect blend between ready and anticipation actually
