songz album is sounding kind of boring/bland

maybe i'm just not in the mood 4 it rite now

i have yet to listen to the songz except for the middle part which i really liked -- skipped around a bit & it seemed boring -- his last album was like... a 6.5 or 7/10 which i think is prob his peak

yeah i'd agree anticipation/ready is most likely his peak

after one listen I'm really feeling the PLEASURE portion of this ("red lipstick," "unusual" and "doorbell"), the rest is quite generic/boring besides a few songs ("can't be friends," "made to be together"), and his r. kelly impersonation is kind of obnoxious on some of these tracks

Did mmts become super successful just by cutting his braids off? That's the theory I'm gonna run with

The characterization of his last album was a bit generous... "I invented sex" isn't exactly a zany song by any means

"I Invented Sex" is a pretty fuckin' goofy song, man

idk i've always seen trey songz & trey songz songz as incredibly generic, some just happen to be really good

the goofiest part about him is prob his ad lib

and his goofy-sounding vibrato

yeah he totally sounds like a cartoon character

i mean let's not forget his first top 40 appearance was making disturbingly accurate female sex noises on a Twista song

trey is pretty goofy to me; the little headpop "UP!" chirp he does in the video for bottoms up is hysterical and makes me think of him as the songzbird

he comes across to me, when he's not being boring, as a boring person who's making a real effort to be goofy, but he just has an odd idea of goofiness and hence ends up being actually quite weird

i don't think much of that comes thru in his music at all

like i don't think 'ready' is endearingly goofy or charming or anything... i think he succeeds in being exceedingly good at generic 2000s r&b even tho a lot of his songs just end up as non-entities -- the first trey song i really loved was "can't help but wait" which i thought was a ne-yo song for like two months -- also he's actually attractive

"i invented sex" & "neighbors know my name" are more successful for being great slogans & sonically pleasing than because trey's goofy personality shines through

sidenote: you don't like "wonderwoman" or "gotta make it" ? :(

agree btw I don't think his music is weird or goofy at all, but I guess my barometer for goofiness in r&b (r. kelly, oran juice jones, etc.) is kind of high lol i mean "neighbors know my name" is kind of silly/goofy conceptually (plus the "KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!s" are hilarious) but for the most part he's more on the generic side than anything else

my forever favorite songz song is "i need a girl" cuz i think it sounds like something from 'confessions'

really? always thought that song was generic stargate rehash

xps yeah not sure i really accept the use of hyuk-hyuk goofy, or rather in the sense of him trying to be, wrt songz - his is a ridiculous whirl of affectations sincerely done in the name of modern swag i feel. or yeah, cartoonish, in terms of caricature strictly, cos he is a blank slate still fundamentally .

to this end though i'm finding passion, pain & pleasure uniquely victim to its guest-spot allegiances; 'bottoms up', and its nicki verse, casts songz and his songz in this hugely entertaining and often hilarious rococo theatrical spotlight, with its genteel loverman's picnic fidelity and rarefied moonscapes coming like a weirdly chintzy tongue-in-cheek harps in the bathroom/perfumed loo-roll vibe ("making luuuuv faces", the janelle-monae-eat-yr-heart-out 'pain' interlude!) (and strangely enough though the kells debt is undeniable, i feel i hear more of a pre-kells new jack swing playfulness in there?) - but then 'unusual' is a horrible misstep that retrospectively mires the album in all of (the featuring) drake & boi-1da's weaselly 2nd-bland desperate pointlessness, nearly spoiling it completely were it not for the awesome 'doorbell' pulling clear right after. ("this bedroom is my colosseum"! - either you love the silly grandeur or you don't.)

i predict i will be sick of this album in a week. but in a general sense the question i think it asks of you is, would you rather reward an idiot genuinely doing his best, doing something at least, or would you prefer to hand a limp gas-station bouquet to the more artistically talented guy half-assing it, like the-dream? songz has endeared himself to me.

i think the album is good! i gravitate towards pragmatism -- trey is our r&b star, i accept him

not that this album is anywhere near any dream album but okay

'ready' has great singles but i think this album is actually better

also - and this will probably be of still even less interest to anyone here - the guy songz most reminds me of right now is aidonia the dancehall dude, who i always felt was a similarly annoying vybz&busy-biting tabula rasta before he finally recently came into his own quirky lane as others faded while he maintained

xp yeah i see this one as a perfect blend between ready and anticipation actually

no sure how well it will perform commercially though. i could imagine 'alone' doing okay on the radio but after that i'm struggling besides what's already out

never understand when you say this -- what song on Confessions even has that kind of vibe or production?

what resonates about trey to me more than his album is the general sound of his stuff -- some stuff like "say ahh" & "lol :-)" & " i need a girl" are outliers, but the smooth, soft, almost trance-y tone of the synths on tons of his songs stand out for me -- how understated the drums are always too, either always sort of rippling or just offering an understated thump -- it makes his albums distinctly modern sounding but also sort of classy -- i can see why he would be the male r&b star of choice for older heads -- sometimes the songz lag as songs but there's a great flow & feel to this album that isn't broken up really by it being 'sectioned' or by the singles (or possible singles)

I don't think songz really plays to his strengths on this album, "doorbell" is definitely the best track, the 'Pleasure' section is the strongest to me because it sounds like Ready/anticipation, I feel like he's going for a kind of classicism with some of the production that doesn't suit him, so it comes off as really boring.(see: "yo side of the bed" off of ready

yeah see i think his interaction with that classicism is exactly what's not boring about it all (and i str8-up came round to loving 'yo side of the bed' btw - lolz at the video). how he is on the pleasure section is perhaps a very particular lloydian frame he could corner the market in but i wouldn't go so far as to call it a strength, just a less busy avenue he's fine in.

i guess...that seems an abstract association, though. if it was gonna fit on any Usher album it'd be 8701.

trey sounds really infantile to me; most of his songs have a nursery rhyme feel

i really can't imagine wanting to listen to a trey songz album, even if i like a few of his songs

i dont hear anything 'nursery rhyme' about it but i totally get where jordan & rtc are coming from -- this guy just executes different types sorta generically. i think maybe thats why i prefer the float-y lloyd-y songs the most, his whispy-ness sorta fits in w/ that better?? whereas otherwise, including the stuff where hes being omg wacky, it never feels like his own identity is tied to the wackiness, that it was kinda a business decision & hes going thru the motions performing dry versions of 'wacky'

nah i don't agree w/ the business decision view at all - trey wants to be popular, adapts to the times & is happy to perform. it's fair to say he might be a dull fellow that sometimes puts himself a little at odds with his vocal gymnastics but anything more than that is too strong imo.

i feel like singling out the 'pleasure'/floaty thing is kind of a backhanded evaluation as well - isn't it only just a particular quality of voice (rather than what the singer's doing with it, or how it works in terms of the singer's persona or whatever) that compliments these aesthetic radox wonderlands ppl wanna curate. like drake all suddenly elevated to being a permissable r&b artist on the basis of him not having enough character to perturb 'shut it down'.

'doorbell' is especially nice because songz finds a space to vamp just the way he does throughout the rest of the album, ie the sections of the album aren't nearly as defined as you guys seem to make out. like i know i lauded the "bedroom is my colosseum" line earlier but the fun of it is "... ring the bell i'll let you in" right after - an enormous colosseum with a regular door and dinky musical doorbell is kinda pretty much the very essence of the ymts experience.

i agree with this 'can't be friends', 'red lipstick', 'doorbell', 'unfortunate' and 'already taken' are the songs i'm really feeling on this. honestly i don't understand some of the criticisms of this guy, 'infantile' huh? what songs are we talking about here?

that is:
a) a brilliant song
b) doesn't sound anything like what i consider to be mmts' core "sound"

i like trey! lotsa barely rhymed nonsense song stuff with see-saw blips and nah-nah-nah-nah-nah pacing and high speed falsetto. Maybe playground rhymes is more appropriate than nursery rhymes but his stuff does NOT sound like grown man r&b to me.

"your body's a problem/they call me the problem solver" sounds like the kind of thing a virgin would say

I think the latest Future of R&B (vol. 36) makes a strong case for Trey Songz. It's an unusually off volume, heavy on weepy, serious songs, but Trey's contributions are so brisk and light on their toes. They're really refreshing. I don't seek out his albums, but his singles usually brighten up the radio.
