holy shit, that's even worse than the Meshuggah

YOUR LAME

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:18 (sixteen years ago) link

It's a bit, erm, busy, that's for sure. Idolator's going to be all over this one for their 2008 worst covers tournament if they ever see it.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:46 (sixteen years ago) link

that would not look good on a backpatch.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:46 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think the "www.jesterhead.com" thing is going to be on the cover, obviously. But it definitely stands out. Way better than the Meshuggah cover.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:51 (sixteen years ago) link

InFlames have always had the WORST covers and shirts and songs.

chaki, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 01:01 (sixteen years ago) link

OK, I can't really argue with you about the covers (although I still like the new one), but the Star Wars-style shirt is pretty cool, and they are the band that got me into death-type metal, so I have much love for them for that. They had a really great run of albums between Jester Race and Clay Man.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 01:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, as much as I like In Flames, their album art is not very good. Actually, I found a really cool Come Clarity shirt a couple years ago, it has the artwork used on the promo CD, which was way better than the actual album cover.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 01:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Okay, that new cover is so getting referred to Idolator for the Worst Album Cover competition...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 01:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow, no kidding. I liked the last album, but the sketchy picture of the guy ripping out his own heart is so painfully emo.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 01:21 (sixteen years ago) link

I really like that weirdly busy and colorful one. The little sticker thing in the lower righthand corner makes it look worse than it actually is, I think.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 02:21 (sixteen years ago) link

if you enjoy that cover, rox, i think i know of a book you would REALLY like:

chaki, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 02:30 (sixteen years ago) link

That's a great book!

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 02:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Ha, that new Alestorm album is great fun. Shame about the voice-overs, though. I only wish they'd ditch the synth in favour of some real accordion...

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 03:37 (sixteen years ago) link

After hearing Gojira and Hacride do such great stuff with a similar sound, Meshuggah seem to be spinning their wheels.

in my mind I've always seen them as mad scientist types obsessing over how to finally build the PREFECT MESHUGGAH SONG. yeah, it all sounds the same and yeah they kinda already did it with the 'i' ep but whatevs. still can't wait to hear this.

original bgm, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 05:41 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, that was a poor zing, Chaki. That book is awesome!

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 12:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyway, as I hoped...

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 16:26 (sixteen years ago) link

In defense of "Purpose:" Look, a bad album cover's something like Shadows Fall's Threads of Life, or the freaking skeleton nuns playing pool on the last Black Label Society record. The more I think about it, the more I believe that the In Flames cover is one of the best I've seen in a long time. First of all, jester heads sticker aside, the actual artistry involved is quite accomplished. It's a technically well-done drawing. There are a lot of little details, and things that your eyes can pick up as it examines the painting closely. Secondly, it's instantly memorable and stands out, while making you think for a second about its connection to the title of the record. And the connection is quite obvious and subtle at the same time, which is tough to do. Third, the very fact that Idolator and chaki could read so much meaning into the symbols (like the door and Where the Wild Things Are) means that there are layers and things going on below the surface that are open for interpretation. Fourth, the way the new band logo evokes the early Lunar Strain/Jester Race logo while still finding its own identity is pretty cool. Fifth, and most importantly, you will notice it in a record store, which is the biggest purpose of an album cover. I could see people criticizing it as pretentious, but it's no more pretentious than album art that consists of a Xeroxed picture of a forest at night, and it's a whole lot more interesting to look at. It's controversial, sure, but the best art usually is.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:12 (sixteen years ago) link

And is it really a big deal? Sabotage is a huge ILM favorite and may be the most laughable cover ever. Come on Bill, put on some pants

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I mean, I'm not saying that people aren't allowed to dislike it, I've just yet to see a well reasoned argument as to why it isn't a good album cover that doesn't involve the word "gay" or snarkiness.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

It's garish to be sure, but I like it when metal albums are hyper-colorful. Cleanses the palate.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

(I like the opposite, too.)

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I agree Jeff, and I actually kind of like the cover too, even though I try to avoid looking at the vagina dentata.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:28 (sixteen years ago) link

"looks like 90s goth johan vasquez comic book" - me

chaki, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:30 (sixteen years ago) link

come anticipate TEETH with me

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, and that would be a valid criticism if it looked anything like Jhonen Vasquez's work. Totally different style. And what's wrong with a metal cover looking like a comic book?

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:34 (sixteen years ago) link

wow you're really reppin. maybe you'd be interested in the jesterhead.com inflames package http://www.jesterhead.com/images/colonypackage_2.png

chaki, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

And you're really doing the opposite.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh man, I really want that glossy band photo to pin up above my bed!

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:46 (sixteen years ago) link

whatev, rox. me and idolator agree. you and jeff treppel can go jack each other off at the JETS game while looking at the new In Flamers cd cover.

chaki, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link

OK, I'm confused now.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Look, I don't really have any vested interest in the album cover, but what is ILM for if not thinking way too hard about trivial music matters?

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 21:27 (sixteen years ago) link

lol @ whatev, rox. me and idolator agree.

But yeah, chaki: maybe getting a little riled up?

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 22:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I think chaki was touched inappropriately by an In Flames album when he was young.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh yeah!? Well why don't you eat shit!!!

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Me?!

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:27 (sixteen years ago) link

yah you

chaki, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:33 (sixteen years ago) link

This discussion has devolved rather quickly.

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:36 (sixteen years ago) link

says who

chaki, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Um, me?

Jeff Treppel, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 23:38 (sixteen years ago) link

this is pretty brutal

Haw, I was joking Jeff!

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I know, I was just... playing along. Yeah! Playing along...

Jeff Treppel, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 00:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Anyone know much about this Vancouver band Bison? Anyone got the album?

http://www.thrashermagazine.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=34&Itemid=41

Friend sent me two tracks and they're really great mid-to-fast tempo grinding thrash.

bendy, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 02:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I didn't know anything about Bison, but I'm intrigued by the MySpace tracks. Half thrash, half early Mastodon...not too shabby at all. "Dark Skies Above" especially.

Spent the day spinnnig Saviours and Warbringer again, two strong albums that just keep getting better the more I play them...it's not quite the blazing start to 2008 like 2007 was, but still a strong first quarter so far.

I'm waiting eagerly to hear that new Sword album...

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 03:21 (sixteen years ago) link

re bison////
i have their only release so far and play it alot. it is pretty short at about 33 minutes but definitely worth seeking out. a few members from former skatekids the s.t.r.e.e.t.s.
