you accused arguably the most famous poster of the board of "stalking" you while referencing his day job

seems like the kanye thread got pretty fun!

max, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 15:33 (thirteen years ago) link

'while referencing his day job'?? separate posts / points in the discussion. & i accused him of disgreeing w/ me just to disagree & used the provocative 'stalking' bcuz its the internet, its not like i was accusing him in a court of law u dork

im not filing a g-d restraining order. it was more that it felt like mild ilx bullying

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 16:32 (thirteen years ago) link

like, ive hung out w/ dude irl, we got drinks. i dont think he is literally stalking me. i do think he was trying to pick arguments w/ me whenever he got a chance, regardless of the content of the argument in question. 'stalking' was a way of being dramatic abt it

not to speak ill of the self-banned but i think dude just has a tendency to troll people/threads when bored, and is probably one of the most well meaning/least malicious people on here with that habit, so it was just funny to call him out like that

Prince SBanBan (some dude), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

wait, who has a tendency to troll now?

how so

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 10 December 2010 00:40 (thirteen years ago) link

it was just a funny 'my world of young people' zing!!

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Friday, 10 December 2010 00:41 (thirteen years ago) link

NWA vs. Run DMC is crazy -- i think obv NWA had a larger impact, or impact over a larger time (assuming we include solo careers here), but i do think that a lot of the credit given to NWA for breaking street rap the way they did is really more about an abstract hardcore vibe that run dmc had too .... id rather listen to NWA but Run DMC are underrated bcuz their stuff dated more quickly & they didnt have the productive solo careers (jam master jay aside!) that NWA did

why is that funny? because whiney has no irl friends?

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 10 December 2010 00:42 (thirteen years ago) link

it's funny because you get massively defensive about it for no reason instead of just taking it in stride as something you said one time that we all can laugh about

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Friday, 10 December 2010 00:43 (thirteen years ago) link

like, it would be 'funny' if there was some 'truth' to the idea that me bringing that up was about anything more than observing whiney's tireless refusal to observe that there are people who exist outside of the internet

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 10 December 2010 00:43 (thirteen years ago) link

nah i think im ceding rhetorical ground in that case -- whiney genuinely believes that this was about me trying to be down or say i have black friends or whatever weird shit he was projecting on me observing that, hey, in the real world, this is non-controversially a popular song

my take:

N.W.A. felt more like the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of street talk coming into the mainstream of hip hop, like it made it a phenomenon...but they far from the first...obv, they did it in a more compelling and visceral (and well produced/polished way thanks to dre)...

Run-DMC to me is still THE event of hip hop because yah they did have a street vibe, the way they dressed, the more angry yelling tone, the stripped down beats...everything before them seemed old fashioned after them...

it's almost a beatles/50s rock n' roll thing...like the beatles were more sophisticated musically and probably have more influence on stuff that is happening today...but the 50s rock n' roll guys created the environment that made the beatles even possible....they really changed the world more than the beatles did IMO.

311 did 4/20 (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 10 December 2010 00:46 (thirteen years ago) link

iirc it first came up when i observed a positive consensus towards 'fuck you' by cee lo.

al disagreed & he or someone linked to the singles jukebox as evidence

i said that, like, in my anecdotal experiences, it was kind of universally liked, (more than even say the kanye record is now), implying that this was an ilx / critnerd bubble that suggested the song was getting mixed reviews.

cant believe we're still arguing about THAT clusterfukk

i think this is a solid argument. one of the things that i think about a lot though (cue GZA thread clusterfuck), is how stuff sounds in today's context. You can still drop Eazy E in clubs & people go nuts for it ... his voice really feels relevant today. Other than throwback nights, though, I cant see people dropping too many run dmc songs. (did love hearing rock box in GTA)

For awhile when i spun i was using the peter piper instrumental -- that shit still sounds bonkers

but dude ppl are clowning u because 1) it was a legit funny phrase and 2) you get so mad about it. imagine if sarge got this pissed every time someone dropped a 'svelte' or something

yeah it's almost as if anytime someone brings it up as a joke another poster starts furiously posting all earnestly trying to defend himself in an argument that hasn't even happened

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Friday, 10 December 2010 00:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i got annoyed because ppl started thinking that you for real couldnt bring up anecdotal experiences, or that it somehow undercut your argument to do so!! i dont give a shit, i still get crap for rocking chair in the trillville thread, or sage francis's nuts, or whatever else, but i dont make a big deal about it. this is like, it seems like dudes think theres an actual issue w/ the content of what i was arguing, that there was some fallacy in incorporating real world experiences.

if this is not the case then ill leave it alone

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Friday, 10 December 2010 00:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean hasnt whiney genuinely tried to argue that i was making some kind of cred argument? thats just flat-out incorrect
