not BRAGGIN 2010 but I met Keith M last month and he was just a swell dude, really pleasant to hang with

Probably a lot, considering he was in Black Flag for about 15 minutes almost 35 years ago.
also everyone that was in black flag is important. they are an important band, the last great american adventurers.

am i missing something re: henry thinking shouting "get in the van"="mouthing off"? or is it just him being paranoid and primed for a confrontation?
― hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 4 November 2010 00:15 (thirteen years ago) link
probably equivalent of shouting "I drink your milkshake" to daniel day lewis. the gentlemanly thing to do is grin sheepishly and tip your hat, then go about your business, right? but wouldn't you rather have him suddenly walk up to you bug-eyed, shouting, "Drrraaaaaainaaage!" that's a story to take to the grave.
― Philip Nunez, Thursday, 4 November 2010 00:18 (thirteen years ago) link
Henry would have been more irked if they hadn't recognized him.

Yeah I recognized it too and was going to ask the same, so I assume that's what it is. I think the record section since closed though.

I feel like there was something edited out or Rollins is just a little paranoid. Also weird that he was so clearly trying to avoid the word "hipster" even before the confrontation.
― sofatruck, Thursday, 4 November 2010 00:31 (thirteen years ago) link
rollins comes off as a sexist creep several different times in that clip--hard to do, tbh.
― call all destroyer, Thursday, 4 November 2010 00:33 (thirteen years ago) link
like, that many different ways in 5 minutes
I think I sort of understand what mentality he was trying to complain about but Whiney summed it up in the second post like 10x better than Rollins did, plus his whole preemptive strike freakout was just insecure and weird.
I mean I think there are a lot of young people who would have a slightly condescending take on any music of the past that seems directly, sincerely confrontational and/or political -- enjoying it on some level while being above it and above everything else. But I feel like Rollins doesn't even fully get how that operates and just has this "WHY YOU MAKIN FUN OF ME!" attitude -- pretty undignified and immature for a man his age.

re: sexism, I dunno, he was about as creepy in the nardwuar interview as well. are you sure it's not just general pomposity?

Of all the offensive display names I've seen over the years, I'm kinda surprised this is the one to ruffle so many feathers. Oh yeah, wait a minute, the offender isn't part of the 77 clique. That explains it all. I mean, come on, if Whiney or, say, deej, used that display name as a "joke" it wouldn't have been such an issue.
lol not at all, if any of the "77 clique" had used it i prob would've gone in on them even sooner - obv that exists and i shun it tbh

I know how he comes off here, but I think in his way he was being self-conscious and trying to make fun of himself, even though he's all up in their faces. He's never, ever been good with adulation, he prefers confrontation...so even though they're being cool to him, he turns it into something he is defending himself from. It comes off as douchey, I can't exactly defend it but I've been a fan for a long time...Hank kind of defines secondhand embarrassment in social situations, imo

Henry Rollins comes off as unnecesarily aggressive and prickish. The hipsters were trying to be cool but never said anything particulary douche-y imho, au contraire they were trying to be nice to him.
I couldn't hear the name of the artists and records he thinks are 'hip'. Any help please?
― Moka, Thursday, 4 November 2010 02:09 (thirteen years ago) link
don't think he's being prickish really. he's overly sensitive and he misreads the situation and acts awkwardly, but totally in the best of intentions. like, he thinks theyre making fun of him for being an old man, but really they just think wanna take advantage of the situation and score some hipster cred

not that the thread needs a cap'n save-a-henry here but yknow.. folks (and esp in the les or brooklyn or cake shop) oughtta (and often do) have a pinch more tact (and uh, cool) enough maybe to not be shouting peoples names or work titles at em in what (video crew notwithstanding) is a mostly chill situation. yellin 'get in the van' and 'omg h rollins' is a straight heckle in this situtaion. a totally playful one, and not much warranting quite the response it gets, but i ain't surprised there was one

atm this is the top comment on reddit and I'd say I agree:
I think this is a perfect example of someone expecting something to happen and in effect making it happen. He interpreted what the girl said to fit his expectation then went off on a diatribe that he was expecting to give. It didn't matter what the girl said or what anyone else said, the same thing would have happened because his expectation manufactured it. He has been doing this his entire life, if you watch any of his interviews you see him doing the exact same thing over and over again.

OTM. That "Here we go" was such a tell. He brought her to that record store fully intending to tell some hipsters that their lives were worthless and to show them Shirin Neshat as proof of that.

God I hate watching him intentionally be a dick to that kid under the guise of "fucking with him." guess what Hank, lots of people can't fucking stand being interviewed just like you, but one option is instead of trying to make the interviewer eat that, bite your lower lip & be grateful that you have a job where you're more or less your own boss and maybe try and let other people have fun and not just you. Dick.
