The production on that album is like a spa

Jeremih is close to beating Dream at his own game this year. Lacks a 'Yamaha' but I'm more prone to spinning the whole album.

ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, I like

overtheseas aeroplanes I have flown (k3vin k.), Thursday, 18 November 2010 03:33 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't dislike it at all. I just didn't really give it much time. I'm not even sure I gave it a second listen.

dark side of the goon (The Reverend), Thursday, 18 November 2010 03:43 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah dude it's a total grower, i think pretty much all its boosters here admit it took them a few listens

really do find that a bizarre viewpoint. i would be loth to criticise the new one by most other available yardsticks, but not in comparison to the debut.

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 November 2010 03:52 (thirteen years ago) link

with the exception of quadron (who i've never heard of) i would stand by lex's list and add ne-yo, jeremih and what i've heard of miguel
i'm sure the ciara is gonna be a monster, have we already discussed the new single?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgUtoUu1r50
haven't heard the new bilal; it's worth hunting down?

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 18 November 2010 04:23 (thirteen years ago) link

ciara has her own thread, forks

yeah i know; presumed it bared mention at least in passing here

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 18 November 2010 04:34 (thirteen years ago) link

lol i think we have 100% reader crossover b/w this thread & that thread

big smang theory (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 18 November 2010 04:36 (thirteen years ago) link

except me apparently, heh.

i wanted to and then i didn't have much luck finding it and kinda gave up for the time being

ethnic slizzur (some dude), Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:24 (thirteen years ago) link

^ lolling at that dn.

can't really add to the albums already been said, and tbrr the only ones i'd really go to bat for are erykah and mmts. i suppose it's not really worth me making the big statement about this being the worst r&b year in living memory yada yada, but yeah pretty much all the germane kicks i used to get i've gotten out of 2010's uk funky, house & dancehall tbh.

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:46 (thirteen years ago) link

just listened to the new avant album btw. it was average.

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:47 (thirteen years ago) link

avant should just change his name to average

ethnic slizzur (some dude), Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:56 (thirteen years ago) link

lol

dark side of the goon (The Reverend), Thursday, 18 November 2010 06:02 (thirteen years ago) link

poor myron avant, burdened with lies from the start.

should probably now clarify i meant the bad kinda average as opposed to his earlier stuff's (imo) good kind.

rtc can you do yr guide to dancehall 2010 plz, it doesn't have to be fulsome or anything, just the essentials.

that new Ameri(i)e track has reminded me of how much I love her voice, too bad the song itself is pretty terrible

get the fuck out of my mouth (boxedjoy), Thursday, 18 November 2010 13:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I was also hoping for bigger & better R&B albums this year. I'm sure I missed some good stuff, but the Bilal album (and to a lesser extent the Badu album) were the only ones that sounded like revelations to me. Love King is great, but it pales to Love vs. Money, which is a desert-island album for me, and the new Trey Songz and Ne-Yo are nice but don't offer much new.

Jeremih's album is also a sleeper; totally delightful.

Evan R, Thursday, 18 November 2010 17:33 (thirteen years ago) link

what is this extra 'i'?

dark side of the goon (The Reverend), Thursday, 18 November 2010 21:02 (thirteen years ago) link

there's also a mj-esque disco number called "don't make me wait" where she actually sings with restraint and subtlety (!).

About two seconds into the first listen, I said "Oh shit" aloud and... sheeeeeeeeeeiiiit.

Interesting how this (produced by Carlos McKinney, btw) has the guitar wriggle from Aretha's "Jump to It," which isn't all that different from the one in Jazmine's mom's "Think Fast."

Digging most of the album.

(Terrible low-quality snippet. The last line of the chorus is "I'll get my Vanity 6 on.")

Andy K, Friday, 19 November 2010 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Just did a search and was mildly disappointed to see no instances of "Jerimeh."

YouTube video just went up for Chrisette Michele's "Blame Game"... I always mangle my attempts to embed these things, but this one's worth the potential embarrassment

About two seconds into the first listen, I said "Oh shit" aloud and... sheeeeeeeeeeiiiit.

indeed - just got the album and this is def the standout. i hadn't clocked that the lyric was "i'll get my vanity 6 on" before!

jazmine album gets a definite thumbs up - the ne-yo duet is another highlight, funny and a bit meta, better than anything on the disappointing libra scale. "love you long time" also stood out. a couple of the tracks are a bit jazmine-by-numbers on one listen but this might change, and it's not like she's resting on her laurels all the time.

feeling this new Keyshia Cole "Long Way Down"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yKztREEeq4

her harmonies on this are great... this sounds like she's forgot about whatever she was doing on A Different Me and went back to that lush sound she perfected on Just Like You.. also, glad Justice League is doing more R&B stuff now that's obviously their strength... they have their own female R&B artist who is dope can't remember her name at the moment

Just got the new Miguel album—apparently it has a release date of Nov. 30. Sounds and looks a little rushed and low-budget TBH, and it's really all over the place; lots of dumbed-down electro-pop and Kid Cudi-ish oddness, which is a shame since he's best over straight R&B/hip-hop beats. But at least his two songs with Salaam Remi are amazing, the two tracks with Dre & Vidal are alright, and this track "Teach Me" is wonderfully bizarre; reminds me a bit of an electrified Bilal/Prince hybrid. Still love this guy's voice and have cautious hope for future releases.

just want to say that i love this cover? the trenchcoat is like a subtle "im still not a real R&B singer but i want to be" bit of self-aware roleplaying right? and the album title is XD

as far as miguel, his song w/ jcole made me accept jcole

challop and a muff (deej), Friday, 26 November 2010 23:25 (thirteen years ago) link

in fact his song w/ jcole is 100% awesome & behind only 'lay it down' and 'window seat' as far as mainstreamish R&B singles go this year

has everyone heard the jazmine sullivan album yet? think it's out there now. really good - fantastic backing vox throughout ("love you long time" is spectacular, esp w/the military tattoo) and i'm really taken by how concise she is - most songs clock in well under 4 minutes - they get in, do their thing and get out.
