my mans is seriously so boring & oftentimes so aggressively anonymous that i have a hard time saying that he does a certain type of song well -- i think material makes or fails him, not the other way around

neither did i, before i actually listened to this one. it's worth it!

i like as much earnest stuff (i need a girl, can't help but wait, can't be friends) as i do jokey stuff (bottoms up/say ahh, i invented sex, neighbors know my name)

oh yeah, "can't help but wait" is good. forgot about that one.

i think it's hard to get through the whole thing in one sitting -- it's long and kinda monochromatic & i've had to force myself to go back & hear it in order for songs to start separating themselves in my mind

he's kind of an artist right now where i end up loving like pretty much every single, and you could cobble together a pretty dope 13 or 14 song album out of his last two albums combined, but neither of them are actually all that great, tho i think the last one is prob slightly better

oh i pretty much just listen to either the first third or, more often, the last third of the new trey - def a bit too much for one sitting. he sounds like he pushes himself a lot more not to sound generic when he's being earnest - re: his lighter stuff, i don't dislike songs like "say ahh", and if i ever heard them on the radio i'd probably be more fond of them, but they're not that special.

everytime i hear "bottoms up" i feel like trey must have sheepfacedly went back to the lab after doing "say ahh" and been like "ok i probably could have been a bit less obvious about ripping off 'blame it'"

hearing "say ahh" on the radio a bunch taught me to hate it. it reeallly doesn't hold up.

i think my problem with "can't be friends" is he's being a sleeze and trying to pass himself off as sympathetic. like...i have no problems with r&b dudes being sleezy as long as they kind of own it? but when they try to have it both ways it triggers my gag reflex.

"Can't Help But Wait" is great because Trey is the 2nd hammiest vocalist in R&B after Beyonce and it taps into that while still utilizing his young man swag -- the intro with the pew pew pew lazer gun noises and deadpan "check it out" leading right into those verses full of over-the-top vibrato and the ridiculous emphasis of lines like "you're worth MUCH MORE THAN THE OCCASIONAL I LOVE YOU!!!!!" that tension is missing from "Can't Be Friends," which is just pure pork.

ha i remember the first time i saw trey songz it was in the video for scarface "girl you know" and my first thought was like man that dude needs to get punched in his stupid smug face reaaaally hard....my second thought was goddamn scarface has gotten fat as hell.

"Goon Sex" wasn't quite as good as the title promised, but "Sex Dance" is precisely as good as its title.

The Weeknd thread is reminding me how great the Anticipation mixtape is, but I actually prefer the showboating, Apollo-rocking Trey Songz of Passion Pain and Pleasure over Anticipation's eerie, man-in-space act.
