yeah the last third of the recent album is very good

i think my problem with "can't be friends" is he's being a sleeze and trying to pass himself off as sympathetic.

this strikes me as pretty real.

I think it's a great album.

i like the new album pretty well

"Can't Help But Wait" is great because Trey is the 2nd hammiest vocalist in R&B after Beyonce and it taps into that while still utilizing his young man swag -- the intro with the pew pew pew lazer gun noises and deadpan "check it out" leading right into those verses full of over-the-top vibrato and the ridiculous emphasis of lines like "you're worth MUCH MORE THAN THE OCCASIONAL I LOVE YOU!!!!!" that tension is missing from "Can't Be Friends," which is just pure pork.

ha i remember the first time i saw trey songz it was in the video for scarface "girl you know" and my first thought was like man that dude needs to get punched in his stupid smug face reaaaally hard....my second thought was goddamn scarface has gotten fat as hell.

"Goon Sex" wasn't quite as good as the title promised, but "Sex Dance" is precisely as good as its title.

The Weeknd thread is reminding me how great the Anticipation mixtape is, but I actually prefer the showboating, Apollo-rocking Trey Songz of Passion Pain and Pleasure over Anticipation's eerie, man-in-space act.

My favorite song on the album is probably its most over-the-top. I love how it cycles through so many conflicting moods and emotions yet brings them all to this great resolution:

you say that as if it's actually as big as "Bottoms Up," though. he's never going to have a top 10 hit again.

If Robin Thicke and Jason Derulo can do it, I wouldn't count Trey Songz out.

he could have a pretty strong Greatest Hits collection at this point but i can't imagine getting hyped for a Trey album. the last one was trash outside the singles.

trey songz doesn't strike me as one of the r&b dudes most concerned with creative control, his label probably just thought he'd reached the limit of his market potential and didn't give him the best songs

i get the opposite impression, i think he has a hand in the writing of most if not all of his songs and has a very strong sense of his sound and his 'brand,' whether i always like the results of not. xp

Yeah, I think Al's right. If you look at PP&P, he was the primary writing credit on nearly every song, which is probably why that was such a coherent, vaguely classicist R&B album. On Chapter V, he has almost exclusively secondary writing credits. That's probably why that album is such a scattered mess; there was almost certainly some label meddling going on there

Like a lot of R&B singers, it doesn't take much for Songz to come across as a sleazeball, a cornball or an asshole. Chapter V really didn't have a good sense of where those boundaries were.

that album had TWO songs built around football metaphors. the Ty Dolla $ign-written "Fumble" was just the worst.

"heart attack" is his best single though (either that or "can't help but wait" imo)

"Heart Attack" is all time. Plus it's my fiance's favorite Trey Songz single; she's been talking about doing it at karaoke for ages.
