gould disliked quite a lot of music, evidently. i mention mozart because like the beatles he created some of the most beautiful melodies ever written - and yet gould didn't like his music. it seems like counterpoint was much more of interest to him.
off topic but reading a book of his letters at the same time, many of them were these extraordinarily kind responses to his fans.

also, fuck off, beatles.

Could this thread maybe be put on hold for Dec. 8?

clemenza, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 13:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd like to say fuck off to the boomers and hipsters who tell me I'm required to be in love with The Beatles because they're "revolutionary". They made good music but they're just as overplayed as any other popular 60s band on Classic Rock radio stations.

Actually, I hate when any popular artist, current or classic, is crammed down my throat as required listening (Kanye and Lady Gaga, I'm staring at you two). It's like forcing a school kid to read classic literature, they end up unjustly hating it.

If you don't like this thread, you could always fuck off to another one.

jazmine sullivan's something special, isn't she? 'need u bad' was real slow burn for me but it got there in the end. that middle 8! sadly all trace of 'lions, tigers & bears' has vanished from youtube and the internet is not providing an mp3, but i loved it when i heard it this morning, that line about how "the most frightening thing is you and me" is brilliant. 'bust your windows' is great too. i like that she's ~not~ obsessed with wanting to be mary j, pace keyshia.

― lex pretend, Monday, July 21, 2008 3:14 PM (2 years ago)

basically if you have any clue at all you'll be too busy listening to 'high price' by ciara ("MY BODY LOOK SOFTER THAN A MCDONALD'S HAMBURGER BUN!") and 'need u bad' by jazmine sullivan on loop to have time to give a shit. i am off to do just that, have fun stewing in your own tedium kidz xxx

― lex pretend, Tuesday, July 22, 2008 6:11 AM (2 years ago)

am really hyped for jazmine's album, 'in love with another man' and 'lions, tigers and bears' are astonishing too.

― lex pretend, Tuesday, July 22, 2008 6:19 AM (2 years ago)

jazmine sullivan album being biked to me today :DDDDD

― lex pretend, Thursday, September 11, 2008 5:30 AM (2 years ago)

jazmine sullivan! 'need u bad' is amazing and i am hype hyped for her album.

― lex pretend, Monday, September 15, 2008 5:40 PM (2 years ago)

and jazmine sullivan was astonishing on one listen.

― lex pretend, Wednesday, September 24, 2008 9:21 AM (2 years ago)

(best grammy nom = JAZMINE SULLIVAN in best newcomer)

― lex pretend, Thursday, December 4, 2008 8:50 AM (2 years ago)

the others are just indie bands right? not wasting my time on that. need to cleanse ears w/some jazmine sullivan (who, incidentally, should be fucking at the TOP of this list)

― lex pretend, Thursday, December 11, 2008 6:01 AM (1 year ago)

sacrificed my jazmine trax in the hope that the album will place...couldn't decide between my favourites ('in love with another man' and 'lions, tigers & bears') and the most likely track to place ('need u bad') anyway

― lex pretend, Friday, February 6, 2009 6:26 PM (1 year ago)

jazmine repped for in neither albums nor trax polls...that is a poor, poor loss :(

― lex pretend, Wednesday, February 11, 2009 5:10 PM (1 year ago)

anyone heard the jadakiss album> feeling the joint w/jazmine sullivan...

― lex pretend, Thursday, April 30, 2009 6:33 PM (1 year ago)

how do chancers like this bitch get no 1 hits out of nowhere while ~true talents~~ like jazmine sullivan can't get played in this country?

― lex pretend, Thursday, June 11, 2009 10:38 AM (1 year ago)

"hit em in the mouth" is amazing

what i ain't gon do is: call my pops
what i ain't gon do is: call no cops
i'm no jazmine sullivan, bustin all your windows out
i'm from memphis, tennekee: imma bust you in your mouth

― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, July 15, 2010 7:17 PM (4 months ago)

oh yeah, i heard half the jazmine sullivan album today. wait'll you all hear "redemption", that song will blow you away. spoken word/rapped verses, one from a crack whore's perspective and one from a male domestic abuser's perspective, and an absolutely massive gospel chorus. there's also a mj-esque disco number called "don't make me wait" where she actually sings with restraint and subtlety (!). and a big retro-sounding ballad called "excuse me" where she does not, at all. looking good so far, basically.

― لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, October 12, 2010 2:03 PM (1 month ago)

oh yeah jazmine sullivan! def a contender based on the 5 songs i've heard.

― lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Wednesday, November 17, 2010 5:36 PM (3 weeks ago)

has everyone heard the jazmine sullivan album yet? think it's out there now. really good - fantastic backing vox throughout ("love you long time" is spectacular, esp w/the military tattoo) and i'm really taken by how concise she is - most songs clock in well under 4 minutes - they get in, do their thing and get out.

― lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Friday, November 26, 2010 6:28 PM (1 week ago)

it's soooo frustrating that an album as inventive and full of ideas as well as trad r&b values like the jazmine sullivan one will get like 1% of the critical attention of janelle monáe's (let alone kanye's)

― lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Sunday, November 28, 2010 6:34 PM (1 week ago)

as far as i can tell she has even less of a profile than jazmine sullivan outside the US. trying to drum up editorial interest in jazmine is some blood/stone ish - i just can't even face trying with fantasia ;_;

fucking hate rock criticism sometimes.

Mark G, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:49 (thirteen years ago) link

are you both really that dim?

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean i could start explaining why enthusing about a niche artist over the course of HALF A YEAR in the run-up to her new album is not quite the same thing as the entrenched canonisation of bigger artists but if you're that dim then there's not really any point

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:57 (thirteen years ago) link

I was joking, kinda.

For job, read "role" then.

Mark G, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:03 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm not sure there's a niche vs. bigger distinction worth making -- the point is artists being "crammed down my throat as required listening"

it actually comes across more like lex is on her street team, he's so enthusiastic, which is great..... but it's not much different than people extolling the virtues of the beatles over and fucking over, imo

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:40 (thirteen years ago) link

-20 posts in half a year = street team? posting on relevant threads (rolling r&b, best-of-year) = cramming down people's throats? what the fuck?

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:44 (thirteen years ago) link

posting about the beatles on beatles threads = cramming, too, then?

lex I do think it's weird for you to complain about omnipresence when you consistently rep for things that are ... well, omnipresent. and insist that they're relevant precisely BECAUSE they are so omnipresent.

lex mostly I'm thinking back to some old thread (a year ago? maybe more) where you were enthusing about how chart pop's relevance to you personally was based (at least in part) on the fact that it connects you to an active, vital cultural discourse, its commonality and widespread nature going hand in hand with that. does this ring a bell.

"Information by surprise" is even legal in Sweden (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

i was referring more to "music being made now" as opposed to "music made 20-30 years ago", not chart pop specifically. i do think awareness of stuff of a certain stature is kinda important but while i roll my eyes whenever people boast about not having heard a lady gaga/kanye song ever, and not even knowing who they are, i don't think their fame means they're Important.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

well mostly it just means those people choose not to expose themselves to certain avenues of music more than anything. which is, y'know, fairly common for a lot of people. I dip my toes into chartpop every now and then (I spent several hours over the last weekend lol'ing at MTV2 video playlists) but it's not really that difficult in this day and age to just be oblivious to various things (including the Beatles and Kanye), no matter how popular they are.

"Information by surprise" is even legal in Sweden (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:25 (thirteen years ago) link

-20 posts in half a year = street team?

Um, seems about right.

(don't sweat it...)

Mark G, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:26 (thirteen years ago) link

it's more taking issue w/the way it's often presented, which is a faux-superior "i am so above knowing who lady gaga is"

xp what the hell are you talking about
