oh yeah and my home computer is broken and i am having too much fun hating it to fix it at the moment

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 9 December 2010 16:26 (thirteen years ago) link

because it reminds me that by the end of the all time thread it was pretty much 1000% no fun anymore.

you are not kidding.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 9 December 2010 16:33 (thirteen years ago) link

you know, it took months to persuade you to run a 2010 metal poll, you were so worried about people complaining about the results (which, let's face it, ALWAYS happens on ilx). apparently the solution is to veto any album that could possibly be complained about once the results roll out, which in the end, will just get everyone complaining about what's missing from the results, instead of what's included. funny how that works...

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 9 December 2010 16:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I just want to see people's ballots. Can we skip the roll-out and tabulation and just talk about our favorite heavy shit released this year?

It'd be like Rolling Metal, but include people who may not be interested in the daily minutiae.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 9 December 2010 16:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it will be awesome whether a couple of albums get vetoed or not and everyone should just, like, suck it up and applaud the good job being done by the abacus and calculator people.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Thursday, 9 December 2010 16:45 (thirteen years ago) link

This is ILM. We don't applaud till after the complaining's done.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 9 December 2010 16:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I enjoy the roll-out the most, I would hate to skip that part.

no one nominating Xasthur?

Now I know how noodle vague feels

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

wow, this thread really makes me not want to participate in the poll. If you all are so concerned about crossover albums placing, why not hold the vote after the main one, and omit anything that places there instead of arbitrarily vetoing anything based on a presumption that it will place high and somehow shouldn't.

sofatruck, Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

something tells me Swans would be more put off by being classified as "metal" than anyone here is at them being considered for the poll. I think KJ should be in the poll.

I haven't seen mention of The Howling Wind's Into the Cryosphere. Also, please keep Horseback's Invisible Mountain as a 2010 release. Nobody here discussed it before 2010. Even allmusic lists it as '10. I haven't heard it, but Arckanum's Sviga Lae might be worth including?

get off my lawn (rockapads), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:45 (thirteen years ago) link

how about we just announce the swans album as the winner of the poll ahead of time and then we can move on to the nominating and voting and everybody wins

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:47 (thirteen years ago) link

the howling wind album is there

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

why don't we have a poll to see which albums should be on the poll, then poll the results for metalness, then poll those results for ability to make clothes fall off of love interests

BO (DJP), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Putting aside the "corny indie people will vote for it" argument, Swans just don't feel metal, as I think I expressed fairly cogently above. That said -- IT'S ONE FREAKING ALBUM PEOPLE. There have been around 1000 posts bitching about how ONE ALBUM hasn't been allowed, when there is a selection of hundreds of great releases this year. Algerian Goalkeeper is running this poll. By his rules, Swans have been vetoed. He also vetoed Killing Joke, something that I nominated, by the same rules, and I'm not complaining. End of discussion. YOU are the ones making this poll not fun for YOURSELVES.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Killing Joke are girly metal! as definitively proven by the post above.

(j/k)

hipity-hopity muzik ftw! (Ioannis), Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Who says we're not having fun being whiney assholes? I veto J3ff's definition of fun.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:28 (thirteen years ago) link

JEEZUS -- I am sorry I added to this contentious bitch session. I, personally, would like to make algeriangoalie and jj's life easy, not cause active pain for them. If this is going to be a dumb ego-fest then it ruins all the fun.

Let the Swans in, whatever... I don't care anymore!

I want a tracks poll! (Viceroy), Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link

but I don't think I want a tracks poll anymore...

I want a tracks poll! (Viceroy), Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link

nothings changing. No swans and there's no interest in a tracks poll so there wont be one unless others suddenly want one.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I think we all just need to take a step back and take a deep breath and remember why we're here: this poll is supposed to be a fun way to celebrate the metal releases from this year that we've loved. Two of my favorite metal-adjacent releases have been vetoed, and that's fine, because there will be other places I can express my enjoyment of them. let's just try to be reasonable here. I think we can all agree that, while Swans may be heavy, they do exist in a gray area when it comes to "metal." That gray area is why the vetoes exists. If something clearly not meddle was nominated, like LCD Sound System, there wouldn't even be a discussion. And we've definitely discussed this one to death. Enough people felt that they don't belong, just as enough people felt that Killing Joke didn't belong. Can we please move on and stop derailing the poll and get back to the task at hand, which is to talk about music that we love?

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Would be nice if people tried to boost albums that are actually nominated.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:37 (thirteen years ago) link

(metal, not meddle, obviously)

why dont you add the real xasthur album?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:44 (thirteen years ago) link

albums i would like to boost (that probably haven't been heard by a lot of peeps):

Cough - Ritual Abuse
Eldjudnir - Ragnarok
Liveride - Туманами

and albums that are pretty well-known but are way awesome:

Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini
Electric Wizard - Black Masses
The Sword - Warp Riders

Without warning, a wizard walks by. (Viceroy), Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:44 (thirteen years ago) link

What was the name of the Xasthur album? Wasn't there a few out this year? inc one with marissa nadler that i still need to hear.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 9 December 2010 18:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini
Electric Wizard - Black Masses
The Sword - Warp Riders

i really need to SERIOUSLY play the above three some more.

Dawnbringer album is fantastic. Anyone heard their other albums? I read that they were very different.

I'm going to have to ponder my nominations on the tree of woe but...

Also, please keep Horseback's Invisible Mountain as a 2010 release. Nobody here discussed it before 2010. Even allmusic lists it as '10.

I believe I voted for it on the 2009 poll. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b9/Emblem-cool.svg/50px-Emblem-cool.svg.png

Can I just take a second to stump for the Ihsahn album? Listening to it again right now and this thing is seven different kinds of amazing. The saxophone adds such a great touch. If we ended up doing a tracks list, "Frozen Lakes On Mars" would very likely be in my top three.
