I bought and loved "...But Seriously" when it came out. However in retrospect that would be my answer.

I would like to note also, that I had never heard "Illegal Alien" until I was well off the Phil bus and that until last year or so, thought it was Sting.

I doubt Sting could have done that then although of course it was another time and what is surely not passable today may have been in 1983. I have no problem seeing "Illegal Alien" as borderline racist today, whereas in 1983 some people may just have considered it a funny joke. I am sure it was not meant to be vicious in any way, but it still was.

(But even Virgin didn't realize that by then obv otherwise at least it would never have been a single)

Just before the " ... But Seriously" era was the end for me. But I still listen to pretty much all the stuff he did before that, including his great assists with the likes of Gabriel, Eno, Howard Jones, Frida, Philip Bailey ... plus that period when he was playing drums for Clapton and Robert Plant and basically everybody at every benefit concert.

He was also personally responsible for rescuing John Martyn (of all people) from an early death, basically the Bowie to Martyn's Iggy.

Was never a fan in the '80s, but Busy Signal's cover of "One More Night" and the recent interviews where he talks about hating his own music have softened me. "In the Air Tonight" probably deserves canonization. I'm listening to "Two Hearts" now, and this seems like the perfect setting for his voice. He must have sensed as much given his recent album.

reading that interview makes him sound like a pretty interesting dude to hang with, just chill and talk about ghosts and the old west.

They had just been through a similar hurtful breakup. Apparently, Martyn's breakup songs on "Grace & Danger" were the ones that inspired Phil Collins to make "Face Value".

Went for "mainstream pop genesis" era. Love ABACAB, and the s/t album (I think? The one with "Mama" on it), and I can put up with PC's v early singles. But he got insufferable later on and so did Genesis. Shame really.

I do realize "Illegal Alien" should be an option here, but I sort of concentrated on solo Phil from "Face Value" onwards, Genesis being more of a side project for him at that stage.

i never got on or off the phil collins bus. of course i never dug genesis prior to abacab, one of the least melodically interesting bands the british isles have produced, but i both liked and hated the pop genesis/collins with equal intensity. for every "in the air tonight", an "against all odds". great drummer, but fucking "illegal alien". makes it hard to takes sides. in the late 80s and early 90s i convinced myself that i hated phil collins, as such hatred seemed to be one of the founding tenets of nascent indie fuckdom, but i'd still always get psyched if "abacab" came on the radio. basically made to exist in the form of 3 to 7 mp3s that you play sometimes but never otherwise think about.

there's a really kinda sad article in the rolling stone eminem cover (fairly recent) abt collins, sounds like he never wants to do music again, talks about how he's mystified how much ppl hated him for no apparent reason that he could see, he just felt like he was trying to make music

As for his "No One Is To Blame" contribution, I actually like that one. I know many prefer the original, but I feel the original feels a bit "unfinished". Phil Collins made it sound like a fuller ballad, and it gained from the obvious buildup in his version (plus from his drumming obv.)
