Slashed the tyres on the bus during his "Vote Tory" phase

Shanty! Shanti! Shanté! (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 14:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Apparently he has never voted Tory, just complained about the tax level.

Just before the " ... But Seriously" era was the end for me. But I still listen to pretty much all the stuff he did before that, including his great assists with the likes of Gabriel, Eno, Howard Jones, Frida, Philip Bailey ... plus that period when he was playing drums for Clapton and Robert Plant and basically everybody at every benefit concert.

He was also personally responsible for rescuing John Martyn (of all people) from an early death, basically the Bowie to Martyn's Iggy.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 14:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Was never a fan in the '80s, but Busy Signal's cover of "One More Night" and the recent interviews where he talks about hating his own music have softened me. "In the Air Tonight" probably deserves canonization. I'm listening to "Two Hearts" now, and this seems like the perfect setting for his voice. He must have sensed as much given his recent album.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

reading that interview makes him sound like a pretty interesting dude to hang with, just chill and talk about ghosts and the old west.

Artistically, you mean?

I like reading this thread title either as

A: Phil Collins singing "When did you get off the bus?" in a plaintive, power ballad voice.

or

B: A question posed to Phil Collins.

In answer to the thread question, "When did you get off the bus?"

I say

WHO SAID I WOULD

x-post No, seriously, I think Phil Collins forced Martyn to dry out, or at least long enough to go back into the studio, with Collins as his benefactor. Supposedly the two were very close.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 22:55 (thirteen years ago) link

They had just been through a similar hurtful breakup. Apparently, Martyn's breakup songs on "Grace & Danger" were the ones that inspired Phil Collins to make "Face Value".

X-Post: I suppose he got off the bus after the bus driver had taken him home.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:00 (thirteen years ago) link

i know someone who, to this day, hates phil collins so much he hasn't brought himself to listen to 'another green world'. so wrong!

akm, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:12 (thirteen years ago) link

that rolling stone article is depressing. He's taking it all too hard, if you ask me.

akm, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Who could ever hate this guy's drumming?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 23:28 (thirteen years ago) link

It's okay. You can't hurry love.

He needs to buck up, but reall, I don't care anymore.

Went for "mainstream pop genesis" era. Love ABACAB, and the s/t album (I think? The one with "Mama" on it), and I can put up with PC's v early singles. But he got insufferable later on and so did Genesis. Shame really.

The video clip for "Illegal Alien" is so toe curlingly embarrasing. Did no one think to tell them what it looked like?

Maybe my actual favorite Phil Collins solo song:

The best thing he ever, ever did, though, was Frida's "There's Something Going On."

children with wasting diseases (Phil D.), Thursday, 6 January 2011 01:09 (thirteen years ago) link

It occurs to me one could make a mashup of that and "in the air" quite readily. In fact I suppose someone already would have.

Ex Loin Tamer (Trayce), Thursday, 6 January 2011 01:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I do realize "Illegal Alien" should be an option here, but I sort of concentrated on solo Phil from "Face Value" onwards, Genesis being more of a side project for him at that stage.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 6 January 2011 02:00 (thirteen years ago) link

i never got on or off the phil collins bus. of course i never dug genesis prior to abacab, one of the least melodically interesting bands the british isles have produced, but i both liked and hated the pop genesis/collins with equal intensity. for every "in the air tonight", an "against all odds". great drummer, but fucking "illegal alien". makes it hard to takes sides. in the late 80s and early 90s i convinced myself that i hated phil collins, as such hatred seemed to be one of the founding tenets of nascent indie fuckdom, but i'd still always get psyched if "abacab" came on the radio. basically made to exist in the form of 3 to 7 mp3s that you play sometimes but never otherwise think about.

carles marx (contenderizer), Thursday, 6 January 2011 02:32 (thirteen years ago) link

WTF! At least harmonically, Tony Banks is one of the most genius composers that has ever been, a master of constant key changes!

Should be listening to the Ashes but going to try Illegal Alien instead.

man, he was alright until that part in "Oliver". then I was like fuckit, I'm off this bus

wvw (Z S), Thursday, 6 January 2011 03:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh weird, the song that I thought was "Illegal Alien" is actually Sting's "Englishman in New York" (which is actually about being a LEGAL alien)! Apparently, I was fairly young when I heard it. The actual "Illegal Alien" is so much worse.

It's a dumb song but his harmonies and drumming redeem it.

Collins is liked in the R&B community.

Which puzzles me, but I guess they respect him as a drummer.

This is a belter.

there's a really kinda sad article in the rolling stone eminem cover (fairly recent) abt collins, sounds like he never wants to do music again, talks about how he's mystified how much ppl hated him for no apparent reason that he could see, he just felt like he was trying to make music

now is like the world's foremost collector of Alamo memorabilia and artifacts, like SUPER WEIRD INTO IT...

i dunno, was a strange article but made me feel bad for him.

he's such a great drummer...and while i think geir's presence on the board has made them an object of hate, i really do think the good genesis records are pretty awesome in their odd way

That "This is your Life" footage is incredible. There's NO WAY you could find any celebrity today who'd agree to let their guard down so completely. Am I wrong? Is this show still around in the UK?

Sanford, Thursday, 6 January 2011 16:00 (thirteen years ago) link

No, it was long-running but stopped about 10 years ago, I think.

John Peel had one, MarkE was a guest (by videolink)

Mark G, Thursday, 6 January 2011 16:05 (thirteen years ago) link

As for his "No One Is To Blame" contribution, I actually like that one. I know many prefer the original, but I feel the original feels a bit "unfinished". Phil Collins made it sound like a fuller ballad, and it gained from the obvious buildup in his version (plus from his drumming obv.)

It was an 80s show, wasn't it? I remember they showed it here too. No rock stars appeared, but I think that was also because they preferred people who were nearing the end of a long life, and no rock stars (at least no Norwegian ones) fit with that bill in the mid 80s.

Interesting. Don't take this the wrong way, but you sound a lot like the gecko from the GEICO ads.
Oh, yeah. I know the adverts you mean. It is a London voice, isn't it?

Yeah. Maybe contact them and say, "Dudes, I got this!"
It's not at the top of my list, I have to say. But if I do, I will use you as a reference.

"I suppose if one was doing that, one would probably try to be more off the wall," Banks said, transformed for a moment into the teenage musician jamming in that cottage.

because teenage musicians jamming say "one." Maybe this happens in a "cottage."
