I'm pretty hard to offend tbh - I was referring to lex being offended by odd future in case that wasn't clear

i'm not really offended, i'm just grossed out (and think being grossed out is a bad thing not a fun thing you bunch of 13-yr-old boys)

this is a weird statement to make considering this thread is gonna bear out that most of us actually like 'gangster rap' more than odd future this year
― J0rdan S., Friday, January 7, 2011 3:32 PM (19 seconds ago) Bookmark
? i dont think gangster is 'better' than odd future either, and i wasnt saying 'everyone in this thread thinks oddfuture>gangster rap.' although i do have an ideological/political bias arguing that theres a good reason the drama around drug crime / drug prohibition is so central to rap

most of us actually like 'gangster rap' more than odd future this year
^^^also this. I find Odd Future entertaining but I haven't bothered beyond youtubes whereas rap albums I paid money for this year = E-40, Ghostface, DJ Quik
― assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:36 (thirteen years ago) link
its also weird to me that like ... "it's so obvious they DON'T drink that drug concoction (it would probably literally kill everyone who did) and half of their "bleeding" is obviously just for shits and giggles."
so whats so great about insincerity & irony exactly? they're tools used just as sincerity is used by lil boosie, it doesnt make one inherently better than the other like i feel that post is arguing

Yeah, I wasn't trying to say that at all. I wasn't making a value judgment, nor saying that there's anything insincere or ironic about the video.

im just opposed to statements that seem to imply to me that theres some kind of 'high ground' for rejecting the basic framework around a scene in rap that has been vital for decades now

you're the one who posted the gangster rap is more offensive because they're more sincere which is clearly absurd -- i never made any statement about what you voted for or whatever! relax dude - this is exactly why i wanted to take an ilx break -- if u guys dont want me sharing my opinions then fuck it, im out

i liked odd future more than 'other rap' this year w/ i guess the exception of e-40 and like 'hard in da paint' but its not a general case or anything
i mean odd future works w/ a sensibility & 'language' thats a lot closer to the other music that i primarily listen to - its v much a subjective thing - so i 'get' why i gravitate towards it way more than freeway or w/e but i wouldnt make the case that its inherently 'better' just that its successful and compelling when taken on its own terms

The thing is, there's only so much I can listen to Odd Future, too. It's the same reason I was never into Slim Shady LP-era Eminem, or songs like "Kim" (which I detest); much like Lex, that aesthetic just doesn't do much for me. I love a lot of Odd Future stuff, but I never play it over and over, if that makes sense.

also just wanna say that youth was also important to jerk, and it's not like no one ever mentioned the youth element of various emergent cultures. and this is rather like jerk was produced by one group of teens, crewing up like teens do, with whatever youthful virtues of energy & fun & etc. and with sophisticated raps & technical chops, which jerk was always (charmingly?) deficient in. so i guess 1) it's not like youth wasn't important to jerk 2) there are unsurprising reasons ppl mention they are kids from time to time
― zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:42 (thirteen years ago) link
But I mean, at the same time, when ISN'T youth important to music, period?

zvookster otm. youth isn't really important/relevant to, say, the mid-70s work of Willie Nelson.

let's talk about how good the jacka/laroo album is
and this is rather like jerk was produced by one group of teens, crewing up like teens do, with whatever youthful virtues of energy & fun & etc. and with sophisticated raps & technical chops, which jerk was always (charmingly?) deficient in
i guess the biggest difference is class - not social class but, y'know, what ~type~ of kids the jerk kids were vs. the odd future kids - ie kids who love dancing, dressing up, chatting shit about sex and status, vs. kids who like being gross and watching jackass
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:47 (thirteen years ago) link
jerk kids def seem more well-adjusted heheh
― zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:48 (thirteen years ago) link
kids who love dancing, dressing up, chatting shit about sex and status, vs. kids who like being gross and watching jackass
this is like some silly T/S teenage girls vs. teenage boys dichotomy
― assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:49 (thirteen years ago) link
chatting shit about sex and status
tbh i'd much rather have talked about "gross" than "status" at any age in my life, sex always tho

i dunno, i was not well-adjusted at that age, to say the least. like... i would definitely been more likely to hang out with the of kids than the jerks.
― i don't even vacuum, i'm roomba pimpin (The Reverend), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:51 (thirteen years ago) link
i liked jacka/laroo a lot because i think there is a perfect balance there -- be it laroo or andre nickatina, i think jacka's style works best when it's overtly contrasting someone more deep voiced/typical
― J0rdan S., Friday, 7 January 2011 21:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i love all the light, airy synths on the jacka & laroo album that make it feel like you're cruising around on a cloud or something - it feels really opulent, but super-casual too. one of those albums i had to rebuy just for the higher quality.
