i liked jacka/laroo a lot because i think there is a perfect balance there -- be it laroo or andre nickatina, i think jacka's style works best when it's overtly contrasting someone more deep voiced/typical

lol @ jerk vs. odd future
we were specifically discussing why it was important that they were young, don't be a dick
― zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:52 (thirteen years ago) link
would have derided the jerks as the fucking popular kids.

so addicted to picking out the organ
sounds like an odd future lyric
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:52 (thirteen years ago) link
the jacka & laroo was one of those records where the first track started and i just thought, oh i am gonna love this
― zvookster, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:53 (thirteen years ago) link
^^^lol perhaps the ILX Heathers thread is relevant here
― assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 21:54 (thirteen years ago) link
i would def have identified more w/ odd future socially but jerk wd be my aesthetic guilty pleasure

i love all the light, airy synths on the jacka & laroo album that make it feel like you're cruising around on a cloud or something - it feels really opulent, but super-casual too. one of those albums i had to rebuy just for the higher quality.

shakey: what is that?

lol about what rappers you would have hung out in high school. they would have probably thought you were all fucking dorks
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 January 2011 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link
yay, another one of my picks. glad that did well.
i love how suddenly the album starts! like, BANG just straight into this sweet, sweet chorus

okay I don't know why I dismissed Odd Future based on the way you guys talked about them before, but based on you all essentially being like "they're like a young black better version of ICP" here I looked up "Orange Juice" and holy shit I should have been up on this earlier
― Indolence Mission (DJP), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link
also the energy on SO FUCK AROUND AND POP OFF FOR YOUR WHOLE TOWN~~
there's a thread on ILX right now about the movie Heathers (the central plot of which involves gruesomely murders of the popular kids)
xp

my fav roach gigz off that tape is 'gold' -- so i love the amelodic spindly beats too but it makes 'gold' seem that much better when it comes in
― ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago) link
hmm yeah Dan woulda figured odd future would appeal to yr goofy goth side
― assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago) link
lol and by proxy I now like "Lemonade" a lot more than I ever did
although I still hate the way Gucci sounds

my faves on the roach gigz tape are "respect it" and "goomba pimpin'"

― surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Friday, 7 January 2011 22:06 (thirteen years ago) link
those are good too, goomba pimpin was an immediate highlight to me but for some reason 'let me breathe' & 'gold' hit me harder now for how conceptually consistent they are

"Magic Gas"
period the end

roachy balboa is a really exciting tape, another one that feels like something new, like cohesive and aggressively lyrical but totally zany and fun and pop i guess?

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 January 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link
consistent's the wrong word, they're just topical where respect it & goomba are more train-of-thought type ish
― ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link
going back to roachy balboa now and it's way more exciting than i remember - these beats are kind of nuts and he's just rampant on them
― lex diamonds (lex pretend), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link
(those are xps to my other post -- the tape itself is super consistent)
― ich bin ein ilxor (deej), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:09 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah, like i have no idea why he would go back to normal beats after a whole album of bonkers ones
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 7 January 2011 22:09 (thirteen years ago) link
not sure how goomba isn't topical?
― i don't even vacuum, i'm roomba pimpin (The Reverend), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:10 (thirteen years ago) link
I think the thing I am most furious about right now is that I've only checked out two things on this list and I've loved them both, completely throwing into disarray my baseline assumption that I hate modern hip-hop.
(the other being "Respect It")
