I think "Trogolodyte" was just a popular record among old school hip-hop DJs, and the popularity of the sample comes from that. There's more info on Jimmy Castor and the song's relation to hip-hop in David Toop's book "Rap Attack".

yeah this and "it's just begun" were in a lot of collections when it was kicking off, and it had cool sounding clean vocals, so got used & became part of a tradition
