these are my favourites in rough order of the tapes i've heard from the big list tpp posted w/ some others that weren't on it. i usually have a hard time keeping up w/ rap releases but i guess i've got a lot of spare time lately because i've heard most of them
yg hootie - flight to the motherland (weird that this is my favourite/most listened to bc in some ways it is kind of weak, but he's a really interesting rapper and i keep coming back to it)raekwon - shaolin vs wu tangsquadda b - i smoke because i don't care about lifewaka flocka flame - salute me or shoot me 3killa kyleon - candy paint texas platesgunplay - inglorious bastardjuicy j - rubber band business (thought this was last year)young l - domo kunmouse on tha track - swagga fresh freddietravis porter - music money magnumstity boy - codeine cowboy
some others i listened to briefly & didn't stick (trae, young dro) but might revisit. avoided gucci 2 times, still haven't gotten around to roach gigz, bricksquad, fiend, lil b

squadda b - i smoke because i don't care about life
gonna download

one song i wanted to share from that yg hootie tape is this one yg hootie - west hattnin which contains the perplexing lyric "i'm just licking and i'm gliding and i'm riding on the pussy niggas/i'm in the club on point & all my boys on point, we gone lick yo ass funk." so lol how it seemingly unknowingly pushes generic homophobia into a bizarelly aggressive threat to lick some dude's ass
― flopson, Friday, 4 March 2011 00:21 (thirteen years ago) link
oh and the project pat tape should be added to tpp's list, some great stuff on that

Is a bit good, spaced out, a bit freaky but man it sinks in after a bit.

Nice. I do have to say that going from all the visual puns during Wayne's part to none during Corey's just emphasizes how blah his part is in comparison tho.

gunz verse is an abomination
MAMA LIMA BEAN SURE THAT RHYMES MAMA LIMA MAMA LIMA
― Rovi Wade (some dude), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:42 (thirteen years ago) link
the gunz verse is all dazzle & no substance & that makes it worse than if it was some brain dead gudda gudda nonsense
i can't remember if i used this analogy before but it's like gob bluth doing magic on AD -- there's a bunch of smoke, but nothing happens
― pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:47 (thirteen years ago) link
there's not even that much dazzle -- description applies more to minaj imo
― Rovi Wade (some dude), Friday, 4 March 2011 03:49 (thirteen years ago) link
Not to defend Gunz' verse (which I could take or leave - Jordan otm about all dazzle, no substance), but I never understand when rap fans get all up in arms about weird slant rhymes.

approximate rhymes are plentiful and inevitable in rap and are often inoffensive or even clever and creative. and sometimes they're really dumb, and the rapper chooses to beat you over the head with it by opening a verse with one.
― Rovi Wade (some dude), Friday, 4 March 2011 04:19 (thirteen years ago) link
that line as i hear it is "Word to ya mama/ahm outta mah lima/bean" and there's enough slurred inner-syllabic rhyme there where it never bugged me
― bang-proof-bling-mans (forksclovetofu), Friday, 4 March 2011 04:39 (thirteen years ago) link
yes that's what the line is; my post upthread was not a serious attempt at transcribing it

super frenetic
how old is dude? i can't decide if i think he's a good rapper or not
― pascal's swagger (J0rdan S.), Friday, 4 March 2011 08:32 (thirteen years ago) link
i like the young l tape a lot -- it has some filler but i think the stuff at the end is actually really good (barring "sex is dope") -- dude is pretty melodic as long as you have the stomach for autotune warbling
I was disappointed to find out "Murda" is a straight jack from the Boyz n the Hood soundtrack.

how much does "once upon a time in america" by smoothe go for?
i have a CD of it in great shape.

Hadn't checked for a couple years, but it was going for around $50 then. looks like around 25 now. Not out of reach at all really, just more than I am willing to pay, especially since I already have mp3s.

have u heard the new rae yet? leaked last week
― flopson, Sunday, 6 March 2011 19:20 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah I've heard it. have you?
Based on first impressions it seems good, solid. It's got that sound that makes those online wu stans wet themselves, if you go over to the wu corp forum you'll know what I mean. I haven't really listened all the way through properly, I keep coming back to Snake Pond, From The Hills, Molasses, Last trip to Scotland. It could've been more adventurous, but it seems a cohesive album (except rock n roll), I think Rae still got it on the mic though.
― historyyy (prettylikealaindelon), Sunday, 6 March 2011 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah i posted some on your anticipation thread Anticipate Raekwon - Shaolin vs. Wu Tang but i listened to it a lot this week & now think it's incredible. know what u mean, it's weird i remember after first getting so into 36 chambers & going into the solo stuff being disappointed at how so much wasn't as raw production-wise. i got over it & enjoyed a lot of great music as a result, but i would have flipped hearing this back then

love rae overdub on the intro here put money on this rhyme right here kung fu sample: ~they say he's a swordsman~ who give a fuck if he a swordsman i'm a gunman i run from nothin. love how his crime scenarios are rarely abt generic day-to-day drugdealer shit but constantly something exotic & incredibly dangerous or high profile flyin shooters i wear rugers stars & swords in front of the building, five thousands students or some shit like getting his aunt to mail him a rocket launcher from rwanda

i still think al's public response was unnecessary but he & i talked it out 'behind the scenes'

my top 10 traxx from while i was away (some may have came out before i dunno)
in no order
game feat jacka & mistah fab - im a king remixkeak da sneak - nappy headcousin fik - water in the botity boi - feeling youstyles p - why cry prod by alchemistsquare off - goodfellas feat cory gunzgucci/wiz - 2 timezDubb 20 Ft The Jacka & Mistah Fab - All I Knowdj quik - luv of my life feat. gift reynoldswaka flocka, slim dunkin, yg hootie - pole
also choppa choppa down remix if that counts since the video just dropped
the lucci / bohagan / twista track is cool but comparing it to 'rollin rollin rollin' was bonkers imo
also think the new roach gigz 'f a chorus' is lyrically better than most of the stuff on rb2

also the album no one has talked about on here is from Joe Blow & it's immaculately produced
really cool sheen to it. incredibly constructed album. his name is as generic as his raps, which isn't that bad a thing necessarily, in a lot of cases. you should be payin me and no gun are highlights but theres a lot of great stuff on there
