went to my friend's cd release show last night and they did the song that i played bass on, was pretty fun to hear it through a huge ass PA and it went over well with the crowd, definitely a cool moment for me.

did they loop a few bars of your playing for that track or did you play over the whole thing?

live bass playing is v underrated in rap production, it's pretty much the reason "Lemonade" is my favorite beat of the last couple years

sort of a combo, was interesting to record in a non-band context...basically he sent me the track in parts w/o vox and then with vox, i worked up a verse, chorus, and bridge part....went down to the studio and he just had me play it about 5 times straight through, just ignoring if i made mistakes etc....then he had me play about three times just doing little improv fills and stuff....the end product i think the verses and chorus are basically "live takes" but from whatever of the original takes was the best, then i can hear when he edited in little one-bar fills that i did in the improv takes at certain points....then certain parts he cuts out the bass for a bar here and there...
he showed me how he does everything, like USB turntable hooked into 2 MPCs and how he makes loops and chops up samples and stuff like that, then "plays" them on the MPC...all very cool to see a hip hop process and how it works...
one thing that was confirmed to me is that musicians who say "oh i could do that, it's just sampling people's music" is obv bullshit, there's a lot of stuff that goes into it...jess also said it's getting pretty hard to find "loops" anymore cuz everything has been used so much, you really have to chop samples up and reconfigure stuff....

ha i would never put myself in the league of Mr. Dean (or Stan the Guitar Man)

another cool thing that never occured to me:
some stuff that sounds like a drum loop sample is actually totally played by the producer...he showed me how he will actually get specific snare, cymbal, and bass hits from, say a jazz record that he likes the sound of, then assign those specific hits to MPC pads, so you are basically just making a drum machine beat, but the sounds are "real" from a record...i spose lots of dudes do that but whenever i hear "live" sounding drums i always assume it's a loop

man that album "100 Wayz" that the Dogg Pound put out last year is REALLY good. a hell of a lot better than Dogg Chit. each cut has more of a distinct sound to it, and Daz is pretty on point production wise.
This one's a fav of mine now...

according to the liner notes, Daz and Soopafly did that one. and yep, that's Dru Down.
the whole album kinda fits into this vein, which is surprising given the direction they had gone on Dogg Chit. been banging this album all weekend.

I guess Atmosphere/Big Boi/De La/Slaughterhouse are listed alphabetically and not by order of importance?
― slight even by tweet standards (forksclovetofu), Monday, 28 March 2011 20:22 (thirteen years ago) link
it's atmosphere's festival so i think they always headline
― Bleeqwot the Chef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 28 March 2011 20:27 (thirteen years ago) link
also that's why doomtree is so high on the bill over curren$y and stuff, they can draw usually like 1500+ for one of their big club shows in mpls
― Bleeqwot the Chef (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 28 March 2011 20:28 (thirteen years ago) link
interesting. i always geek out over band placement in these festivals; who has the clout and pull to get higher billing intrigues.

yeah soundset now has a lot more national artists but it started as more of a rhymesayers hometown lovefest
though now that i'm thinking about it, i kinda wonder if atmosphere couldn't outdraw de la and slaughterhouse almost anywhere?

sorry -- someone mentioned it upthread
if it wasn't for the fact that it was put on the internet for free & has a few one verse tracks, it would be kind of a disservice to call this a mixtape -- it's extremely sonically cohesive
