a hipster's just a drunk friend you haven't met

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 12:55 (thirteen years ago) link

if you want to use the word "hipster" as basically a synonym for "snob", I think u will quickly discover that there is a nearly infinite variety of hipsters

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 12:56 (thirteen years ago) link

mustard hipster

dayo, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 12:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I just wanted to point out that the intersection between "hipster" and "classical musician" is packed full of wine drinkers, especially amongst the women. Also mad gin and whiskey drinks.

well you'd need to be a bit mad to make a drink with gin and whiskey..

Mixin' up a little Bombay Sapphire and Johnny Walker Black.

I have no idea who Weeknd are, but I love this thread. I noticed in Oklahoma all hipsters drink PBR or craft beers. And recently in Austin I was surprised at how many people were drinking PBR. I mostly drink wine or whiskey or Scotch.

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 5 April 2011 21:49 (thirteen years ago) link

i still suspect that craft beers are a bigger thing amongst ppl who also happen to drain PBR cans in the states & maybe its a midwest thing

colby, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 10:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i went to trader joe's yesterday and got a sixer of name tag (pretty sure this is worse than PBR) and some cheap white wine that looked decent

am i a hipster / should i listen to the weeknd while i drink this shit

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 6 April 2011 10:52 (thirteen years ago) link

could bump the other thread but I feel like this is a better place for this HIGH PRAISE from a press release:

"2015 has been a breakout year for THE WEEKND, he is just the third artist to have two songs in the Top 10 of the Hot 100 simultaneously in 2015, and the first male. Only Taylor Swift and Meghan Trainor have previously held that honor this year."

also, I'm not sure about the exact dates so the stat may well be right, but wouldn't the first male be fetty wap

for sale: baby shoes, never worn your ass (katherine), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 21:16 (eight years ago) link

it's refreshing to see someone described as the "first male artist to" do anything.

marcos, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 23:56 (eight years ago) link

What baffles me about hipsterdom is how thoughtless it can be. Up here in Canada you never used to be able to get PBR (thank god). The kind of people who would've started the PBR thing in the US drank shitty regional beers - the stuff your drunken uncle would drink - in order to signify "I don't give a shit about your elitist tastes" or whatever. In the west it was Pilsner, or back when you could get it, O'Keefe's Extra Old Stock. In Ontario, Labatt 50. But what are the kids drinking now, coast to coast? Somebody else's drunken uncle's beer. Weird.

hardcore dilettante, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 00:12 (eight years ago) link

uh why isn't "hair" an option

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 00:13 (eight years ago) link

can't believe "free mixtape" didn't get any votes, that's always the reason I hear anything

geoffreyess, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 03:46 (eight years ago) link

iirc he didn't have weird hair back then?

(btw, lol at this thread's long detour into beer talk)

drown zoowap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 05:45 (eight years ago) link

Some foreigner's drunken uncle's beer.

hardcore dilettante, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 05:49 (eight years ago) link

That's specially imported to give an air of being nothing special.

hardcore dilettante, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 05:50 (eight years ago) link

haha, i missed this stealth beer thread. now i want to get to the bottom of what UK people think "craft beer" is.

lil urbane (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 16:34 (eight years ago) link

for a musician/artist is the weeknd's hair really that weird?

marcos, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 16:37 (eight years ago) link

i think cad had this down pretty good

pbr thing isn't really complicated:

1) hipsters need a cheap beer
2) mainstream/fratty brands, lite beers, and brands that cost a dollar or two more are out
3) pbr is is a little better than schlitz, old mil, etc.
4) as an added bonus it's a brand with a strong tradition that can be "reclaimed"

ime miller high life was equivalent in terms of test, value, and cache, esp after they redesigned the bottle. the brand that hipsters really missed on is regular coors, which costs about the same and tests much much better.

in what universe is pbr better than schlitz??

the fuck am i saying, the *rise* of a few degrees.

i had a chart in my head i was trying to describe. wrong axis.

goole, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 18:01 (eight years ago) link

High Life definitely better than PBR or Coors imo. At this point Budweiser is probably the most slept on beer in that class tbh.

drown zoowap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 19:09 (eight years ago) link

In Boston, Narragansett has largely replaced PBR as Cheap Beer of Choice, at least the last time I was at the Middle East and Church. Surprisingly, as close to Boston as Manchester, NH (one hour north on I-93) still has PBR as their cheapest option and yet doesn't stock Narragansett.

Tom Violence, Thursday, 6 August 2015 03:54 (eight years ago) link

yeahh pbr&b has gotta be the worst microgenre neologism ever

soyrev, Thursday, 6 August 2015 04:05 (eight years ago) link

and i agree that his hair is terrible

soyrev, Thursday, 6 August 2015 04:06 (eight years ago) link

Seattle reverted to type and Rainier (ghastly bullshit) became the cheap beer of choice again, although I feel like Hamm's has been replacing it lately.

nah I love his hair

marcos, Thursday, 6 August 2015 12:05 (eight years ago) link

theres a lot about him thats never benen convincing, much like drake, but who needs gravitas when you have dudes mopeing about having to have sex with tens of models every night over dark synths while cursing unnecessarily to show how much attitude they have beyond the sensitively damaged persona?

StillAdvance, Thursday, 6 August 2015 12:28 (eight years ago) link

I missed out on the fact that Max Martin produced his chart topping single. That guy gets around.
