eMC

I liked Prodigy, Sheek Louch, a few album-ish mixtapes (Rich Boy, Young Dro, Boosie, Fabolous, etc.), Byrd Gang was surprisingly decent...people seem to like the Bun B but I kinda hate it.

big xpost

i didnt bother w/ the 3-6 record outside of the singles

deej, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:57 (sixteen years ago) link

gucci's new trapaholics mixtape is pretty good
i think its new anyway

deej, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:58 (sixteen years ago) link

the Fat Joe album really sucked, and I say that as someone that reps for Me Myself & I and Loyalty big time.

some dude, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:58 (sixteen years ago) link

i'll check the rich boy and fabolous mixtapes

'me myself and i' was near perfect

deej, Friday, 18 July 2008 15:59 (sixteen years ago) link

all the shit im most excited about this year are mixtapes

holding out for a really really good album from jeezy

dunno how bun is "disappointing"

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 July 2008 16:00 (sixteen years ago) link

it sounds very by the numbers and rote to me, Bun kicking the same 2 or 3 flows over and over with mostly shitty beats/hooks/guests. kinda ridiculous how it's the highest rated rap album on metacritic this year (Underground Kingz wasn't even ON metacritic to compare to).

some dude, Friday, 18 July 2008 16:05 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah idk a rote by the numbers album is pretty much what i expected, i don't think bun's been doing anything really mindblowing in the past year or so. that said i do i think it turned out to be pretty good and listenable (if only cuz mostly all the guests go in) and it's not something ill be listening to in 6 or 7 months probably but if im bored now its pretty good to throw on.

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 July 2008 16:10 (sixteen years ago) link

sheek lol

deej, Friday, 18 July 2008 16:17 (sixteen years ago) link

if you don't give a fuck about the lox that's really an issue you need to work out on your own time

the lolx

deej, Friday, 18 July 2008 16:25 (sixteen years ago) link

i like the lox, i just have trouble listening to a sheek louch solo LP

deej, Friday, 18 July 2008 16:25 (sixteen years ago) link

he hasn't really improved but it's like the best possible Sheek Louch album, lotta bangers and goofy hooks, succeeds at the generic NY Koch rap album thing where Fat Joe fails

What do we think of High Decibels?

from J-Zone's MySpace:

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t237/zoneloc12/topdogg.jpg

"Man. I've seen some great photoshop finesse and some classy design in my day, but this album cover, I believe, is the cake taker. I used to look at old Master P/No Limit covers and Ca$h Money Records covers and marvel at how the bottles of Moet were larger than the automobiles the dudes were standing next to. Then there was the Big Bear cover, in which the rapper (Big Bear) was puffing on Cuban Cigars with fellow bears (real bears) and Doin Thangs.

But now we have a new champ, and his name is Top Dog. Hilarious title and sheer boldness aside, just take a look at some of the classic goofs that unintentionally make this an amazing piece of art that negates the debate of the music being good or not (it is actually very entertaining and any album featuring Ganksta Nip is worth your time, I promise).

First off, I know we all want to avoid a lawsuit. But if your name is Top Dog, I would assume money ain't a thang. Blurring out the face of the girl that has just been tossed from Magic to Kareem for the two handed flush -possibly in fear of the girl suing- gives us that nice 72 dpi photoshop touch that is rarely seen in todays world of artsy fartsy pencil drawn pre-k art class dreck and overbudget pastelle colored high end rif raf. The girl looks to be screaming for her life beneath that blur, but it's too late. The basket is good! AND 1!!! She even has her hand out to brace her fall on the hard Staple Center floor.

Next, we have the fiberglass backboard, through which you can see broad daylight. It's obviously a picture clipped from a playground backboard during daylight, but where Top Dog is, it looks to be late evening. I mean the skyline says about 7:27 PM- if its spring time, which I assume it is by how he's dressed- but the sky seen through the backboard says high noon.

Also, Top Dog seems to be floating like Clyde "The Glide" Drexler, but in street clothes. Do you know how difficult it is to fly in for a 2 handed dunk in a pair of gators and a blazer?! Try this in the dunk comp on All-Star Weekend and you'll get 10's across the board! BUT WAIT!!!! Judges must disqualify!!! This dude is cheatin'! He's clearly standing on a wooden plank, which strangely is dead smack in the middle of the skyline! This is way too much! Good lookin to Vanderslice for sending me this Picasso-eque posterworthy piece of art.

Whether this cover makes you sigh, cringe, laugh uncontrollably (me) or just look in disbelief...it really IS Top Dog and he really IS Slam Dunk'n Hoes. If only all music today was this fun. Support this man!!!!"

Glad To Stoke Your Love Bring Hip Hop to HD Quality
The Oakland trio combines the riffs of the Blues guitar with the energy and fun reminiscent of late 80's Beastie Boys on their debut album.

Nas put it bluntly: Hip Hop is dead. And whether it's truly dead or just severely ill, critics and fans alike have been steadily bemoaning hip hop's artistic tailspin.
Enter Glad To Stoke Your Love, a veritable musical Molotov cocktail that mixes hip hop, old school rock, and superfunky blues. Featuring two MCs and a crackerjack live band, the group slides easily between classic rap and rock styles bringing a brash, adventurous spirit back to a genre that sorely lacks it.
Frontman Duke Johnson, an East Oakland native, started freestyling at the age of 12 in the schoolyard with some friends, including his current GTSYL partner, hypeman Chief. His first live performance was at a talent show at a local high school. Mid-performance, his backing CD started skipping, and the audience booed him offstage.
The humiliation scared Duke off of rap, but he still felt compelled to rhyme and perform, and decided to try poetry and spoken word. Equipped with plenty of subject matter from his experiences living in Oakland, he gathered his confidence and entered a few slam events. Transfixing audiences with real life depictions of struggles, sufferings and shootings (one he witnessed at the age of 8), Duke soon became a top ranked slam poet in the Bay Area.
It was at a slam event in Berkeley where Duke caught the interest of a successful rock/funk producer and guitarist KC Booker, who was looking to collaborate with some hip hop artists. Seeing Duke onstage got KC's wheels turning and he invited the poet to come by his studio. Duke agreed to give rap one more try, and when they recorded their first tracks -- a potent mix of authentic hip hop and hard, funky blues -- the chemistry was undeniable.
Bringing Duke's childhood buddy Chief into the mix as a hypeman was the final essential ingredient. Coupled with a live band and Chief's raw, kinetic energy onstage, Glad To Stoke Your Love's shows are an exhilarating experience. Their genre-crossing musical style, a sort of rock hop blues, has helped them appeal to all ages and races . With live instrumentation, palpable subject matter, plus a broad fanbase, Glad To Stoke Your Love have assured that hip hop is still alive and well.
