the line up's like three groups in, and d3 playing ocean songs is part of standard atp entry price (in fact, isn't it horse stories they usually do?). i'm sure the line-up'll be pretty great.

I still think ATP NY 09 needs a third heavy hitter for Don't Look Back on Friday. I'm looking forward to Suicide and the Feelies, but Dirty Three and the Drones (much as I enjoy both at times) seem a bit weak to me.
This lineup, on the other hand, just seems incredible:
DevoThe Jesus LizardSpiritualizedSleep - Performing Holy Mountain / selections from Dopesmoker and more.GrailsYoung Marble Giants - Performing Colossal Youth
I think ATP NY has a bit of catching up to do...

Sleep were immense, they played for over two hours. You're in for a treat in Austin, ilxor. Other highlights: Sonic Youth playing a set of only '80s material on Saturday night, T Model Ford doing at least two impromptu sets and being everywhere all the time (not bad going for a 90-something dude in a wheelchair), Beak> being a perfect early Saturday wake up call, Hope Sandoval telling us we all looked "quite tired" (are her and Colm from MBV an item? I'm assuming they are?), Wooden Shjips obliterating any need for a Spacemen 3 reunion, Papa M being one of the few acts to grasp that we don't need to be bludgeoned to death by volume all the time (and proving that Pajo is really wasting his talent on turds like Zwan and Interpol). I guess the Sunn/Boris thing was good but it's not really my thing. I snuck off to see GZA instead, who put a lot more effort into his set than Raekwon's very brief will-this-do main stage appearance. Oh, and Ron Jeremy was there.
There's loads of stuff I'm forgetting but I just got back to NYC and need sleep after dancing the night away to DJ Kool Herc's set.

fine,
Highlights
1. Iggy & The Stooges - Straight up bonkers crowd, Mike Watt totally digging in, Scott Asheton swinging his grooves, and 60-something Iggy just climbing all over the crowd. Total fuckin madhouse. I was in the second row for about 45 minutes and was just soaked and ruined and dehydrated, my shirt completely unbuttoned. Wow.
2. Text Of Light - These guys just obliterated me. Strictly face-melting noise. Was such a good break-up to the more indie/psych stuff. People packed the room ("Hey! Lee Renaldo!") and then there was like 30 of us at the end. But it was so textured and intricate, i just got lost in their goo.
3. Fucked Up - I've seen these dudes before, but it was such a caffeinated jolt. Young kids spazzing out, PinkEye just commands a room.
4. The Breeders - A little nostalgic, totally fun
5. The Food! - Man between the outdoor BBQ ribs melting off the bone, the lateral-minded flavors of Steve's Ice Cream (Protip: lemon meringue with marshmallow), and of course the porkbelly Asiadogs, I was just in heaven all weekend. It's hard to believe just three years ago it was just fried bullshit and now it's like something worth making the trip for alone.
Other highlights: Ricky Powell's slideshow was a riot, T-Model Ford in the lobby was unreal, getting to see Five Easy Pieces and Underworld in the Criterion Cinema was great. Fuck Buttons had ridiculous bass, the book panel was chill
Other stuff I saw!: Beak>, Sleep, The Scientists, Mudhoney, Sian Alice Group, Hallogallo 2010, Shellac, the Breeders, Explosions In The Sky, Sonic Youth, Fursaxa, The Books, Thurston, the Greenhornes, Hope Sandoval, Girls, Raekwon, SunnO))) and Boris, White Hills, Wooden Shjips, Dungen...
and then a few hours with the mighty KOOL HERC

Sounds like I need to check out Text of Light, that's one of the only names on the bill I'm not familiar with. Very jealous of the Stooges set, that sounds IMMENSE. Would welcome details on Neu!/Hallogallo, Sonic Youth (all '80s setlist??), Sunn/Boris, Sleep... although I'm sure everything was great.

• Ricky Powell showed up 30 minutes late and then pretty much went for three hours. Also, he bum-rushed the stage during Raekwon's set and Masta Killa pushed him off.
• Fucked Up poured a giant bag of cereal on everyone and made the ballroom smell like chocolate
• SunnO))) and Boris was really beautiful, not as loud as i hoped, but fantastic.
• Kool Herc did this amaaaaaaaazing set of like rocksteady, into funk, into 80s/90s wedding-ready rap, into reggae and totally had the room packed. Then he closed with B.o.B, some song that sounded like "Blame It" but wasn't and Eminem's "White Trash Party" and totally cleared the room. Probably the only club on earth where that would happen!

I had organized a big pool party in the middle of Sonic Youth's set and everyone was psyched to go, then they played an all-80s setlist and people were so transfixed that i was the only one in the pool
― office (max) (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 13:56 (thirteen years ago) link
Hallogallo was actually a little dull and marred by bad, bassy sound. Sucks cuz it was one of the things I was looking fwd too. But they played some of my fave Harmonia jams, which was great
― office (max) (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 13:58 (thirteen years ago) link
not as loud as i hoped, but fantastic.
This is how I feel every time I've seen Boris since the first, in 2007. They were louder from *outside* the venue, waiting in line, back in 2007, than they are nowadays. But that's a small complaint and I'm sure my ears are thankful, even if my heart is not.

I think I'm right in saying that the most recent Sonic Youth album they plundered was Daydream Nation. Everything else was from before that. They sounded fantastic. An Evol or Sister tour would be great. Unlikely though. Disagree with Whiney on Fucked Up, I thought they were like a Wal Mart vision of pre-packaged punk rock rebellion, just completely lame and pointless. Sunn O))) and Boris seemed pretty loud from where I was standing, I shudder to think how loud they could have been at that 2007 show mentioned up there.
The Jim Jarmusch/Thurston Moore Q&A was a highlight. The story of how they met at a copy shop in the LES was fun - it was a place where everyone used to go to copy flyers and make fanzines in the pre Kinkos era. Moore worked there for a while until he got fired for making copies of his own 'zine on the sly.

I went to the Sunn/Boris show in Brooklyn last night. Was absolutely fantastic despite 2/3 of the power blowing out. It killed the mood a little bit but after trying to fix the situation they came back and did a kick ass show without any fancy lighting. It was great. It was totally loud enough from where I was. Loved it. I'd see them anytime either band comes back to the city. Sunn is the shit.
