Hadn't heard this in almost 20 years before this poll. Even better - and bleaker - than I remembered.

Glad there's so much time left. Making an albums ballot is way harder than my trax ballot was.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 20:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Hope everyone else is thinking like that too - we need more votes!

I keep putting this off. Need to get on it. Meanwhile... mini side poll; which version of 'Tonights the Night' is better to you?

opposite for me -- wasn't too hard to sort out my personal canon of top 50 rap LPs but narrowing down 50 tracks out of all the thousands of songs i've loved felt impossible.

some dude, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

For me, rap is much more a singles genre (is that rockist? who cares.) and, as such, I have a much firmer grasp on which songs have meant the most to me over the last 25 years or so. As for albums, I really only have a total of 20 or 25 albums that I return to time after time and stretching that list out to 50 (which I may not even end up doing) is going to be more of a task.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 20:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I've pretty much decided my Top 50s but I'm enjoying listening to all the nominations so much that I'm going to hold off submitting for a while yet. I've listened to nothing but hip hop since Sunday - this poll is a total joy.

Kinda tempted to place this as my #1 track... It starts all cool with some well put slice-of-life storytelling, but the way everything leads to the epiphany at the end - damn, just damn!

Tuomas, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link

And yeah, choosing just 50 track seems like an impossible task, albums were much easier to narrow down.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 3 May 2011 21:57 (thirteen years ago) link

sent the singles list. still having doubts about sending my 20-25 albums list.

If you haven't heard the album that's off (In Our Lifetime Vol. 1) you should remedy that. Fantastic production largely by Organized Noize.

Albums ballot sent.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 6 May 2011 05:36 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah albums ballot was much easier for me. tracks - I mean shit there's so many, I ended up just throwing a bunch of random shit on there tbh. Granted they are all things I love and songs I will rep for, but ranking them was completely arbitrary once I got past the top 20 or so.

There's always good stuff going on, but I don't think 2011 is particularly great. That's not to say there isn't tons of cool stuff going on but compared to say mid 80s or early mid 90s or early mid 00s it doesn't compare. I get you are just clowning you tube comments but still
